Wateringbury Cottage Gardeners' Society Show (1914)

Extract from South Eastern Gazette of 11th August 1914

Excellent produce was seen at the Wateringbury Cottage Gardeners’ Society’s show, which was held, in the Park, Wateringbury Place, by kind permission of Mr.T. Brocklebank, on Monday. Fruit and vegetables were good, while in the floral section the wild flower bouquets were especially commendable.

The not-for-competition exhibits were a feature,these being sent by Mr.J. Stow (gardener to Mr. R. H.Fremlin), Mr. G. Rogers (Mr. T. Brocklehank), Mr. W. Burt (Mr. W. Jude), and by Messrs. G. and A. Clark, Ltd., Dover. Exceptionally fine were the twenty two plates of choice fruit exhibited by Mr. Brocklebank.

The judges were Mr. Durrant (gardener to Lord Falmouth, Mereworth Castle), Mr. Morgan (Sir William Geary, Oxonhoath), Mr. French (Mr. Burnaby-Atkins, “Hamptons,” West Peckham), and Mr. Neame (Mrs. Cator, the Red House, Wateringbury).

During the day selections were rendered by the Goudhurst Brass Band (under the conductorship

of Mr. Reeves).

The principal prize-winners were: Messrs.J. Stow, E. Pursey, A. Luck, W. Burt, C. Wallace, A. Amos, H. Jukes, W. Weller, E. Curd, W. Eversfield, F. Head, T. Shepherd, F. Sparks, A. Saunders, W. Monger, H. Cronk, F. Cronk, G. Curd, and E. Pursey.
