BRUTAL ASSAULT. Samuel Smith was summoned for assaulting Wm. Watson, at Wateringbury, on the 23rd inst. He was also charged with assaulting Joseph Eagles, at Wateringbury, on the 25th inst. Defendant did not put in an appearance.

Complainant stated he was pole-puller to defendant. On the 23rd inst. defendant wanted him to pull certain poles for him and because he would not do so struck witness two or three times in the face. Joseph Eagles said that he went to pull poles for Watson during his absence. The prisoner then came up and wanted to fight, saying he would do for witness before the end of the hopping. On the 25th he went down to his master's farm and saw defendant there. Soon after he had left defendant sent a dog after him. The dog caught hold of him by the knee, and defendant came and knocked him down. He then kicked him in the face knocking out his teeth.

The magistrates sentenced prisoner to one month's imprisonment for the first case, and two months' for the second, the sentences to be consecutive.
