Shorthorn sales (1884)

Extract from The New Zealand Herald of 6th September 1884

During the first week in July, Mr. Thornton had two Shorthorn sales in Kent, at both of which satisfactory prices were obtained.

At Wateringbury, belonging to Leney and Sons, there was a large attendance, including many of the home breeders and a good number

of foreigners. The principal event was the offering of the Grand Duchess of Genova 7th, for which there was keen competition.

She was ultimately knocked down to Lord Bective for 1100 guineas. A good bull calf out of this cow brought 355 guineas.

Summary —Twenty-two cows and heifers averaged £123 7s 6d: total. £2714 Gs.

Thirteen bulls averaged £59 18s 7d total, £779 2s.

Thirty-five animals averaged £99 7s 7d total, £3.493 7s.
