Boer war aid concert (1899)

In the Church vestry is held a scrap book with newspaper cuttings marked "in Memory of Edgar Clarke-Smith". Some cuttings have a date handwritten beside them. Many are probably from the South Eastern Gazette. The following is marked as from 28.11.99

AID FOR WAR SUFFERERS.-At a recent smoking concert at the King's Head Hotel the sum of £5 was realised for the widows and orphans and £1 1s. for the Reserves fund. The last amount was collected in the room after Mr. C. Field of Teston had recited "The Absent-minded Beggar." Mr. Cartwright was in the chair and was well supported by Messrs. George Woodward, Davis, Hollands, Homewood and Minnis. The arrangements and the promotion of the concert were in the hands of Mr. Richard Woodward, of Teston
