WATERINGBURY.

Funeral of t h e V i c a r .

—The funeral of the late Rev. S. W. Phillips, took place on Wednesday, the coffin being conveyed from the Vicarage at 11 o’clock to Wateringbury Church, where a large number of clergy, including the Rev. C.F. Cobb, Rev. W. F. Cobb, Rev. R. Swan, Rev. Revington- Jones, Rev. Septimus Wigan, Rev. Chas. Shepherd, Rev. C. Hawley, Rev. Guise, Rev. Merryweather, Rev. T. Carr, and others, were waiting to receive it. The greater part of the Burial Service, which was fully choral, was here conducted by the Rev. W. Paxton-Thorp and Archdeacon Lawrence, in the presence, of a large number of mourners and sympathising friends.

The cortege afterwards pro­ceeded to Aylesford Church. Following the funeral car, the first carriage contained Mrs. Spencer W. Phillips, Rev. Ernest Phillips, Miss Irene and Miss Gladys Phillips. In the other carriages were Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Grant, Archdeacon and Mrs. Lawrence, Mr. Lawrence, Rev. W. Paxton-Thorp, Mr Wm. Jude and Mr. R. H. Fremlin (Churchwardens), Col. H. D.Davies, Gen Schneider, Mr. and Mrs. Humphrey, and Mrs. Bishop. The procession was attended through the village by Mr. A. Leney, Mr. H. White, C.C,, Mr. W. W. Blest, Dr. Fry, Mr. P. II. Copley, Mr. E. T. Goodwin, Mr. Whitmore, Mr. T. W. Penton, Mr. Wm. Wells, Mr. French, Mr. Morris, Mr. Martin, Mr. Pearson, Mr. Smith, Mr. H. Harris, and many others. Arriving at Aylesford shortly after one, the cortege was met at the Church gates by Canon Grant, Revs. D. Lamplugh, II. Boyd, Gifford, F. Savage, and Canon Jelf, together with the choir, who sang appropriate hymns as the cortege proceeded slowly to the graveside, where the remains of the deceased were laid in the next grave to that of his son, who died some years ago. Canon Grant officiated. The coffin was made in the old English shape, with coped lid, of polished oak, and had heavy brass furniture, including brass calvary plate, engraved with the following inscription :—“ Spencer William Phillips, In Christo . 1834—1894.”
