The Pirate Campaign Compendium (5E) was published in 2018 by Legendary Games. (The book is largely a conversion of a Pathfinder edition that was funded through the same Kickstarter.)
[THIS PAGE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION; Chapters 1-9 and 12 are complete.]
[AUGUST 2019 UPDATE: Due to the discouraging number of problems I found in this book, I did not finish reading it, and will not be completing the sections below for Chapters 10-11. See my blog for a mini-review of the book.]
Throughout
(The first few issues listed here are also called out wherever they appear in each chapter.)
"OGL" and "SRD" should always be in all caps, because they are abbreviations of capitalized titles (Open Game License, System Reference Document).
"GM" and "PC" should always be in all caps, per standard usage in the core rules.
Book titles, magic item names, and ship names should always be italicized.
The last page of every chapter has the next chapter's number in the margin, except for where the last page faces a song (and then the last page lacks any chapter number altogether).
The coin graphic attached to the bottom corner of sidebar boxes covers up the page number when the sidebar is a full column long. This is unfortunate.
A 448-page book needs an index! Particularly when Additional Rules are scattered in sidebars throughout the book. (See Tim's Appendices: Additional Rules for a complete list of these sidebars, and an index of new "crunchy bits.")
Credits [etc.] (p. ii)
p. iii, Special Electronic Features: In the PDF, underlined words indicate a hyperlink, but that formatting is useless and distracting in the print edition.
Table of Contents (p. vi)
Pages i-viii should use Arabic numerals, not Roman. When a book has front matter pages numbered with Roman numerals, the main text should have Arabic page numbers starting over at 1.
Under Chapter 5, "PIRATES5AND" should be "PIRATES AND".
Under Chapter 10, "MONSTE10S" should be "MONSTERS".
The Drunk Guardsman (p. 9)
No notes.
Chapter 1: Character Options (p. 10)
p. 11, Table 1-01: Pirate Weapons: Under Simple weapons, the boarding pike is out of alphabetical order.
p. 11, Bayonet; and p. 14, Bayonet: There two entries don't agree about whether a firearms can be fired with a musket deployed. The Pathfinder SRD entry (from which these 5E rules were probably adapted) states that firearms cannot be fired with a bayonet in place.
p. 12: Appendix: Early Firearms: Change "Appendix" to "Additional Rules"; an appendix is normally located in the back matter of a book.
There is no mention of the gunsmith or gun training class features here or in the Additional Rules: The Gunslinger Class sidebar on p. 176. This may be an artifact of a less-than-100%-complete conversion from the original Pathfinder text. It's possible that more information can be found with the full class writ-up in Trail of the Apprentice.
Developer comments on the book's Kickstarter page explain that the firearm rules in the DMG are not included in the 5E SRD, so Legendary Games had to devise their own rules for this book.
p. 12, Grappling Hook: The phrase "used as a gear" is awkward and needs to be better explained. Perhaps it should read "used as a pulley"?
p. 12, Rules for Early Firearms: Under Misfires, advantage and disadvantage normally only apply to d20 rolls. The intention is clear (roll damage dice twice, and use the better result), but it should be explained more thoroughly because the advantage rules do not cover this use.
p. 13, Scattering Shot: Always italicize spell names.
p. 14, Aquatic Enchantment: Is the artificer mentioned here meant to be the "Unearthed Arcana" class or subclass, or does it appear in a Legendary Games source?
pp. 17-19, Debonair Fighting Styles (Fighter Feats for Master of Battle Archetype): What exactly is the feat name? Is it the name of the school? Or "Debonair Fighting Style ([name of school])"?
p. 18, Far Pier School: Delete the close-parenthesis at the end of the first paragraph.
p. 18, Iron Snap: Change "enemy" to "enemy's".
p. 18, Leveling the Field: Initiative is not rerolled from round to round, so what is the intention here? Perhaps to delay the target's next turn to later in the initiative count?
p. 19, House Seal (Bonus Maneuver): In the first paragraph, "for until" should be "until".
p. 20, Shining Champion: Add the following text to the end of this feature, to match other oaths' capstone abilities: "Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest."
p. 21, Rigging Monkey: Why is the proficiency with water vehicles used here rather then just "proficiency bonus"? For most characters, this will simply equal their normal proficiency bonus for their level, unless the character is untrained (no proficiency bonus), or has somehow acquired an ability like jack-of-all-trades or expertise that adds half or twice the bonus.
p. 21, Sargasso Siren (Warlock Pact): If this archetype is meant to be a full warlock subclass, it is woefully incomplete, lacking any patron spells or class features. If it is intended to a be a minor tweak to the warlock's chosen pact, then that should be stated more explicitly. Finally, this section should probably be moved to join the Merfolk Druid (p. 23) with a new header along the lines of "Merfolk Variant Casters," or possibly even moved to the Merfolk monster entry on p. 286.
p. 22, Ship Bond: See note for p. 21, Rigging Monkey.
p. 22, Empower Ship: Append "from Improved Bond" to the end of the Maneuver bullet point.
p. 23, Merfolk Druids: See notes to p. 221, Sargasso Siren.
pp. 23-26, Feats: This book contains additional feats scattered in sidebars in other chapters. See Tim's Appendices: Additional Rules for a complete list.
Monsters do not normally gain feats unless they are used as a PC race. The benefits of feats like Amphibious Adaptation should be applied to a monster's stat block as a new quality, rather then added as a feat.
p. 24, Corsair: In the last bullet item, having advantage should only be downgraded to not having advantage, not to disadvantage. In the core rules, if a character would get advantage from one source and disadvantage from another, they cancel out.
p. 25, Eel Strike; and p. 26, Submarine Skirmish: These two feats are similar enough that they should be combined. Also, why does one require a bonus action for the attack while disengaging, and the other does not?
p. 25, Hear the Sea: Delete "creatures" after "moving creatures".
p. 25, Hoist the Colors: D&D 5E lacks rules for demoralizing foes using Intimidation; this is an obvious holdover from the Pathfinder version of the book.
p. 25, Naval Commander: The first benefit seems extremely powerful; the Help action normally grants advantage on an attack or skill check.
p. 26, Sea Singer: Italicize spell names.
p. 26, Share Breath: Under Prerequisite, delete the extra "Prerequisite".
p. 26, Ship Sage: The core 5E rules lack defined rules for identifying creatures.
p. 27, Ancient Explorer: Under Equipment, "archaelogist" should be "archaeologist". "10gp" should "10 gp".
p. 27, Barroom Talespinner: Under Equipment, "5gp" should be "5 gp".
pp. 27-29, Dockside Brawler: Mace damage seems excessive for brass knuckles. They should be added to the Pirate Weapons table on p. 11.
Under Equipment, "5gp" should be "5 gp".
p. 29, Eye for Plunder: Delete "you're" in the second sentence.
Chapter 2: Nautical Spells (p. 32)
pp. 33-34, Sorcerer Spells; and p. 34, Wizard Spells: Under 6th level, "veiled vessel, greater" should either be "greater veiled vessel" or "veiled vessel (greater)".
pp. 34-35, Air Walk: The comma after "suffer damage" should be a semi-colon (;).
"Animal Handling" should be "Wisdom (Animal Handling)".
p. 35, Animate Water: Insert a comma after "4 cu.ft."
"1/2, this" should be "1/2. This".
Under At Higher Levels, "elementals" should be "elemental's".
Note that the Monster Manual does not give stat blocks for more than one size of elemental, which is Challenge 5 (so beyond the power of this spell, even at higher levels).
p. 35, Aqueous Extraction: Change "slain creature" to "slain creature's".
In the second paragraph, change the semi-colon to a comma and insert "and"; insert a comma after "earth".
Delete the extra period at the end of At Higher Levels.
Note that the Monster Manual does not give stat blocks for more than one size of elemental, which is Challenge 5.
p. 36, Bomber's Eye: The explanation of an extract is awkward and unnecessary, Simpy have the spell last 10 minutes from when it was cast.
pp. 36-37, Caster's Caravel: Change "each day, a staff" to "each day. A staff".
p. 37, Channeled Currents: Change "entities" to "entity's"; change "they can" to "it can".
Under Doldrums, navigate checks should be navigator's tools checks (made with either Intelligence or Wisdom?), and swim checks use Strength (Athletics).
p. 38, Depth Charge: Split the second sentence into three by replacing each ", on a " with ". On a".
p. 39, Float: Change "buoyancy" to "buoyant". Swim checks are Strength (Athletics) checks.
p. 39, Flotsam Vessel: Under At Higher Levels, delete the first "section".
pp. 39-40, Hullshock: In the first sentence, "attack" should be "attacks".
p. 40, Interplanar Voyage: In the second paragraph, "hip" should be "ship".
p. 40, Pernicious Poison: Insert a comma after "virulent".
In the second paragraph, "made, as if this also failed" should be "made; if this also fails".)
p.41, Read Weather: "1sr-level" should be "1st-level".
pp. 42-43, Riversight: In the second paragraph, "up of" should be "up or".
p. 43, Salvage: In the last parargraph, italicize the spells name.
p. 44, Sea Scrying: "1000gp" should be "1000 gp".
pp. 44-45, Shock Shield: Delete the period after "Duration: 1 round".
p. 45, Skeleton Crew: In the second paragraph, do not capitalize "Navigators" or "Carpenters", and insert apostrophes.
This paragraph has very confused grammar when it comes to singular and plural nouns and pronouns. (The fourth and fifth paragraphs have similar errors, but not as egreguious.
Under At Higher Levels, insert a comma after "5th or higher".
p. 47, Undertow: Capitalize "strength".
The third sentence has grammar issues and is confusing; how exactly does undertow affect the victim's movement?
pp. 47-48, Unseen Crew: In the first paragraph on p. 48, capitalize "strength".
p. 48, Veiled Vessel, Greater: Italicize "seeming".
pp. 48-49, Wall of Brine: What direction is a creature ejected.
p. 49, Wall of Coral: Change "take a DC" to "make a DC".
p. 49, Weather Eye: Survival checks are Wisdom (Survival) checks.
Chapter 3: Treasury of the Fleet (p. 50)
p. 50, Table 3-01: Magic Items: Insert "weapon" after "skimming", "tracer", "chaining", and "stormshaft".
The spiral saker (fiend's mouth cannon) is Very Rare (see p. 55). See also the notes on p. 52, Bore Cannon, and p.55, Spiral Saker.
p. 51, Cannonball Breastplate: The "fired by you...dealing damage" text in the second column should be inserted after "shot from a cannon". The main text states that the range is 500 ft.; ignore the "range 600/1,200" in the weapon entry (which is copied from the heavy bombard (p. 83).
Is the "+6 to hit" a set value for this item, or should it be determined by the user's proficiency and ability modifier? (cf. notes to pp. 84-88, Siege Weapon Descriptions.)
p. 52, Bore Cannon: This item is nearly identical to the Spiral Saker (p. 55). Either treat the bore cannon as a lesser version of the spiral saker (and change the latter to at least Very Rare), or delete it entirely.
"Dispel Magic" should be italicized, not capitalized.
p. 52, Captain's Cutlass: Strength (Athletic)" to Strength (Athletics)".
Insert a comma after "attuned to the weapon".
p. 53, Hateful Hook: Italicize this item's name. "Hunter's Mark"and "Oathbow" should be italicized, not capitalized.
Delete "against any creature that has attacked the wielder since the end of his last turn". (The second effect is better explained immediately afterwards).
pp. 53-54, Hateful Harpoon: Italicize "stormshaft".
In the second full paragraph on p. 54, "stand are" should be "stand is".
p. 54, Shanty Shiv: The beginning of the third paragraph has not been indented. Italicize the item's name.
p. 55, Spiral Saker: See notes to p. 52, Bore Cannon.
In the first paragraph, insert a comma after "sickening the target with pain". Change "any heal spell" to "any spell that heals hit point damage".
p. 56, Whispering Wheelock: Change "centred" to "centered".
p. 56, Chaining: In the last line of the first column, "weapons" should be "weapon's".
"5th edition player character manual" should be italicized, bold, and capitalized.
Italicize all instances of "chaining".
pp. 56-57, Stormshaft: In the last sentence, "weapons" should be "weapon's".
p. 57, Pirate Brand: What is the effect of activating the brand? Making it appear on the skin?
pp. 57-58, Rod of the Ebb Tide: In the fourth bullet point, "DC 20 spell attack check" should be "spell attack against AC 20".
p. 58, Admiralty Parade Kit: The comma after "inspired by your presence" should be a colon.
The example at the end is wrong (one level higher is 2nd). In order to benefit spells like hunter's mark that require more than a single level increase, the spell should read "by casting it at the next higher level that grants an increased benefit".
p. 59, Ensign of Parley: Insert "check" after "Charisma (Intimidate)".
p. 59, Gloves of Certain Grip: Hyphenate "rope like".
p. 60, Mutable Hook: D&D 5E does not have move actions. You get one action per turn and can move on the same turn.
Change "theives' tools" to "thieves' tools".
pp. 60-61, Sea Lord's Tricorne: The skill checks should probably use proficiency with water vehicles, but the ability score used may depend on the situation.
pp. 61-62, Artifacts: Italicize "ioun stones".
pp. 62-63, Pirate Queen's Pearl: Under Random Properties, remove the period at the end of the first bullet point.
Note that (unlike the Pathfinder RPG), ioun stones in 5E (DMG, pp. 176-177) are listed by their property, not their color and shape.
Chapter 4: Ships and Sailing (p. 64)
pp. 65-66, Shipboard Combat: On p. 66, "the following sample DCs and modifiers" are on p. 65.
p. 66, New Tool: Ship's Helm: This tool seems to duplicate the purpose of the water vehicles proficiency. This may be a result of having to work around the very incomplete nature of the 5E SRD compared to earlier editions, much as Legendary Games had to invent their own firearms rules (cf. notes to p. 12, Appendix: Early Firearms).
p. 66, Shipboard vs. Ship-to-Ship Combat: Delete the closed-parenthesis at the end of the last sentence.
This section is duplicated on pp. 77-78, Combat After Boarding.
p. 70, Control Devices: "The following are" should be "Table 4-03 lists".
p. 71, Current; and pp. 71-72, Wind: See the note to p. 66, New Tool: Ship's Helm.
p. 71, Muscle: Persuasion and Intimidation are Charisma checks; Animal Husbandry is Wisdom.
In the second paragraph, "Diplomacy" should be "Charisma (Persuasion)".
p. 73, Ships in Combat: There are no counters at the end of the book.
pp. 74-75, Hard to Port or Hard to Starboard: "ACTION" should be right-justified.
p. 77, Ramming: "Cmd" and "combat maneuver check" are Pathfinder terms, not 5E. Replace "Cmd" with "modified AC" and "combat maneuver check" with "sailing check".
Indent the next paragraph, and the last paragraph of this section.
pp. 77-78, Combat After Boarding: This section duplicates p. 66, Shipboard vs. Ship-to-Ship Combat.
p. 78, Sinking Condition: Note that 5E does not use negative hit points, so any amount of magical repair (greater than mending, per the next section) will raise the ship's hp above 0.
p. 79, Repairing a Ship: 5E has no Craft skill; this is a holdover from Pathfinder. Use tool proficiency checks instead.
pp. 79-80, Fire: In the first paragraph, "(see Magic)" should be "(see Spell Effects in Naval Combat, page 91)".
In the second paragraph, do not capitalize "Alchemist's".
Delete the last two paragraphs (starting "Creatures can attack ships with spells"). This text is duplicated from p. 91.
p. 80, New Feat: Siege Engineer: Italicize "intelligence" in the third bullet point.
p. 80, Naval Siege Weapons: Under Proficiency, the second sentence is awkwardly phrased. Replace it with: "Proficiency with martial weapons grants a character proficiency with one siege weapon of their choice."
Under Defense and Hit Points, insert a space after "wood."
p. 82, Indirect Attack: "Pc" should be "PC". Insert "4-05" after "Table".
p. 83, Table 4-06: Siege Weapon Statistics: Change "shtore-based" to "shore-based".
Under Range, "2400" should be "2,400" to match the formatting in the Cost column.
pp. 84-88, Siege Weapon Descriptions: Why do these entries give a set attack bonus? The attack bonus is set by the crew leader's proficiency bonus and ability modifier.
p. 85, Light Bombard; and p. 85, Standard Bombard: Remove the space/tabs after "Damage Immunities".
p. 86, Fiend's Mouth Cannon: Move the Cannon Ball paragraph to the end of the entry.
p. 86, Light Catapult: "The targeting DC" should be "The aiming DC". (This action is referred to as aiming throughout this chapter.)
pp. 89-90, Special Siege Engine Ammunition: Under Alchemist's Fire, do not capitalize "Alchemist's" except at the beginning of paragraphs or sentences.
Under Plague Bundle, "Gm" should be "GM".
pp. 90-91, Buildings: Insert "4-08" after "Table".
p. 91, Gates: Craft Magic Arms and Armor is a Pathfinder feat. Magically treating a gate requires a ritual spellcaster (see Magically Treated Hull, p. 100).
pp. 91-93, Spell Effects in Naval Combat: The first two paragraphs are duplicated on p. 80, but belong here, not there.
In the second paragraph, "on the following page" should be "below". Change "affects" to "effects".
pp. 93-98, Ship Statistics: Under AC and Damage threshold, Base Save, and Sailing Check, see the note to p. 66, New Tool: Ship's Helm.
p. 94, Galley: Under Weapons, delete the period after "toward".
p. 96, Raft: Change "oflogs" to "of logs".
pp. 101-102, Sample Modified Sailing Ship: If the crew are NPCs, then they should use NPC stat blocks (like the ones in Chapter 7) rather than classes and levels.
This stat block uses the Plunder rules (pp. 124-125).
pp. 102-103, Fleet Battles [introduction]: "Rpg" should be "RPG".
In the third paragraph, italicize book titles.
In the last line on p. 102, "for the" should be "of".
pp. 104-105, Terminology: Under Significant Character, "Pc" should be "PC".
p. 106, Step 4: Assign Significant Characters: In the last sentence, delete "on".
pp. 106-107, Creating a Squadron: "Determine Hits" and "Determine Morale" should be bold.
Under Special, italicize the book's title.
pp. 107-109, Flagships and Significant Characters: In the first paragraph on p. 108, "Gm-controlled" should be "GM-controlled".
p. 111, Assigning Damage: Change "crossing out of" to "crossing out or".
p. 113, PC Victory: In the second paragraph, capitalize the "disabled" that starts the third sentence.
Chapter 5: Pirates and Plunder (p. 114)
pp. 115-117, Aquatic Adventuring: Under Swimming, "Srd" should be "SRD". The SRD's full title is given as "5E System Reference Document" on p. 115 and "System Reference Document 5.1" on p. 117; it is listed as "System Reference Document 5.0" in the OGL on p.445. Pick one and use it consistently.
p. 118, Sand Dunes: Change "Costing" to "costs".
p. 118, Reefs: Insert "is" after "reef head". Change "eaches" to "beaches".
pp. 121-124, Reputation Thresholds: Reference to Tables 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, and 1-5 should refer to that reputation threshold's section of Table 5-01: Reputation and Influence Benefits (p. 122). The last paragraph, which actually names that table, should probably be moved to just before the reputation threshold entries in the main text.
p. 122, Table 5-01: Reputation and Influence Benefits: Under Glorious/Notorious Reputation, italicize "remove curse".
p. 127, Table 5-03: Disasters; and p. 127, Table 5-04, Major Disasters: When calculating saving throw DCs, "Storm Severity" is 1-6 (1 per line going down Table 5-02).
p. 128: Doldrums: Delete "but" from the last sentence.
p. 129, Scurvy: Two days to recover seems awfully fast!
pp. 130-131, Navigation: In the first paragraph, "its" should be "it's".
pp. 130-131, Maps: Change "proficient with ships" to "proficient with water vehicles".
p. 132, Table 5-06: Prosthetics: In the Peg Leg line, delete the extra period after "5 lbs."
p. 139, G: "Gallows Jumper" should be bold.
p. 140, N: "N" should be "M"
Add Mateys (copy from Hearties/Mateys, p. 139).
Chapter 6: Nautical Heroes (p. 142)
In the stat blocks in this chapter, "Saving Throws" should be followed by the three-letter abbreviation of the ability followed by the total modifier (e.g., Str +4). Add this to the sample characters as follows:
Aethan Calder: Str +3, Con +3
Cathran Tyvirian: Wis +5, Cha +4
"Fairweather" Lumis Prindle: Dex +5, Cha +5
Miriel "Miri" Kalantee: Int +5, Wis +3
Caramina: Int -1, Wis +4.
Ondirra Shirahz: Str +3, Dex +5
"Rookroost" Evon Bloodbeak: Dex +5, Int +3
Silvio "Silvertongue" Devaulis: Wis +3, Cha +5
Taren Torrenato: Dex +5, Con +3
These corrections are not repeated under each character's errata entry below.
Delete the Skill Proficiencies entry from the main text under Background; these skills are included in the stat block. Copy the Tool Proficiencies to the stat block (see Arcane Navigator, p. 179, for an example) and delete them from the main text.
The characters' backgrounds (in game mechanical terms) are not listed, only their benefits (proficiencies and features). None seem to match any of the Player's Handbook backgrounds (only one of which is in the SRD) or the new backgrounds from this book (pp. 27-31), though some of their Features share names with the latter.
Finally, the flavor text quotes seem overly long for many of these characters.
pp. 144-146, Aethan Calder: In the first sentence under Background, "unrealized" is an odd choice of word; "unrecognized" or "unclaimed" would be better.
Under Feature, "5gp" should be "5 gp". (This feature is pretty much identical to Bad Reputation from the Pirate background from the PH.)
pp. 148-150, Cathran Tyvirian: It's clear that her goddess is based on Desna from the Pathfinder RPG. However, that goddess's name is not Open Game Content.
Under Background, "Ty-VEER-ee-uhn" would be easily to pronounce.
Under Advancement, "(see sidebar)" should add "on next page" or "page 150".
p. 150, Luck Domain: Under Channel Divinity, "30'" should be "30 ft."
pp. 152-154, "Fairweather" Lumis Prindle: In the character quotation, delete the comma before "Fairweather".
Under Saving Throws, indent the second line.
Under Background, "cargo" should be in double quotes. His Feature has the same name as one of the new backgrounds in Chapter 1 (p. 27).
Under Personality, "lucky halfling" should be in double quotes.
Under Advancement, "Athetics" should be "Athletics"; in the next sentence, "third" should be "3rd".
pp. 156-158, Miriel "Miri" Kalantee: In Caramina's stat block, the parenthetical notes after Saving Throws seem to be copied from Miri's stat block, but should not apply to her familiar.
Under Background, her Feature has the same names as one of the new backgrounds in Chapter 1 (p. 31).
pp. 160-164, Ondirra Shirahz: Under Background, "water djinn's" should be "water genie's".
Under Physical Description, the sentence describing her hair is a bit awkward. One possible replacement: "Her scalp is kept shaved except for a long single braid of deep sea blue hair growing from the back of her head."
Under Advancement, monks do not gain their monastic tradition until 3rd level. She cannot have archetypes in both her classes until she is 5th level.
p. 161, Additional Rules: Variant Race: Aquan (Tiefling): Taren's Roleplaying Ideas (p. 176) refer to Ondirra as an undine; the aquan tiefling is clearly a conversion of that race from Pathfinder. Some DMs may wish to use the water genasi (from the Elemental Evil Player's Companion) instead, but that race was not included in the 5E SRD.
p. 162, Additional Rules: Circle of the Sea: Under Amphibious Ambassador, insert a closed-parenthesis after "breathe water". "60'" and "30'" should be "60 ft." and "30 ft.", respectively.
pp. 166-168, "Rookroost" Evon Bloodbeak: In his stat block, Saving Throws goes before Skills. Indent the second line of Skills. Under Glide, "Feather Fall" should be italicized, not capitalized.
Under Background, his Feature has the same name as one of the new backgrounds in Chapter 1 (p. 29).
Under Advancement, note that Evon will not acquire archetypes for his classes until 5th level (rogue) and 6th level (fighter). The Assassin is the obvious choice for rogue. Either Champion or Battle Master could be appropriate for fighter (and note than Aethan Calder, pp. 144-146, will become a Battle Master a few levels before Evon would qualify).
Under Roleplayign Ideas, note that Evon is the only evil character in a group of mostly chaotic good and chaotic neutral characters. His bloodthirstiness is likely to cause frequent friction with the good-aligned PCs.
p. 167, New Race: Tengu: Under Alignment, "a n d" should be "and".
Under Glide, italicize "feather fall".
pp. 170-172, Silvio "Silvertongue" Devaulis: Silvio is described as having the Fiend patron, but has been given the telepathy power of a Great Old One warlock, and his patron, Father Dagon, is (according to many Cthulhu Mythos sources) an Elder Deep One (p. 268). Choose one or the other, and apply its abilities consistently.
In his stat block, Saving Throws goes before Skills.
Under Languages, "30'" should be "30 ft." (or delete telepathy entirely if making him a Fiend warlock).
Under Actions, the weapon name should be bold, and the type (melee or ranged) in italic.
Under Background, "contemplate" and "recruits" should be in double quotes.
Why does this character get two Features, when all other 5E characters only get one? His second feature shares a name with one of the new backgrounds in Chapter 1 (p. 29).
Under Advancement, "Theives'" should be "thieves'". If he is a Great Old One warlock, change burning hands to one of the new patron's spells. Silvio does not get an Ability Score Increase at 4th level; that is a class feature tied to class levels, not overall character level.
pp. 174-176, Taren Torrenato: The "narrow bracer" listed in Equipment and described under Physical Description is rendered as a small round shield in his portrait (p. 173), but his Armor Class does not include it. Are gunslingers proficient with shields? (The Pathfinder class is not.)
In his stat block, Saving Throws goes before Skills.
Under Roleplaying Ideas, the first bullet point refers to Ondirra as an undine. In her own entry (pp. 160-164), she is described as an aquan tiefling, which is how the authors converted the undine race from Pathfinder to 5E.
p. 176, Additional Rules: The Gunslinger Class: See notes to p. 12, Appendix: Early Firearms.
What Do You Do with a Pygmy Halfling? (p. 177)
No notes.
Chapter 7: Pirate Codex (p. 178)
Throughout: Below the Challenge line, any entries starting with bold text should also have those words in italic (per MM usage).
Projectile weapons (such as bows, crossbows, and firearms) have range, but no reach. Delete reach from all such attacks.
Italicize the names of all magic items.
p. 179, Arcane Navigator: Under Armor Class, italicize "mage armor".
Under Spellcasting, fireball is a 3rd-level spell, so requires a minimum 5th-level caster.
The Reactions section can be deleted; shield is listed under Spellcasting.
pp. 179-180, Artillerist: Under Special Gear, capitalize "alchemist's".
p. 180, Black-Bearded Buccaneer: Under Evasive, capitalize "dexterity".
In the paragraph of regular text, capitalize the "its" that starts the last sentence.
pp. 180-181, Bloodthirsty Buccaneers: Under Sneaking Surround, "Any creature ending its turn adjacent" should be "When any creature ends its turn adjacent".
Under Vicious Offense, Delete the first "targets".
p. 181, Cannoneer: "Seige Master" should be "Siege Master".
p. 182, Common Pirate: There is nothing common about a 17 HD pirate!
Under Sneak Attack, "boatswain" should be "pirate".
pp. 182-183, Daring Swashbuckler: Under Multiattack, enter commas after "attacks" and "dagger".
p. 183, Drunken Rabble: Under Brawl, move the last sentence to just after "reach".
pp. 184-185, Elite Pirate Sniper: Under Longsword, damage should be "5 (1d8+1), or 6 (1d10+1) if used with two hands."
p. 185, Exiled Triton Conjuror: Under Life Aquatic, the doubled bonus gives a total modifier of +8.
Under Special Gear, put parentheses around the list of scrolls.
pp. 185-186, Freebooting Gambler: Under Skills, capitalize "hand".
Under Bluff, capitalize "deception" and add a period at the end of the entry.
p. 188, Halfling Stormbringer: Shield is normally cast as a reaction, so makes a poor choice for a scroll. The scroll would presumably already need to be in the character's hand to cast it as a reaction?
pp. 189-190, Imperial Commander: Alignment should be lawful evil, to match its imp familiar and midshipman (pp. 190-191).
Under "Inspire", "bard" should be "imperial commander".
pp. 192-193, Master Artillerist: Under Senses, insert "darkvision 60 ft."
pp. 193-194, Pirate Boatswain; and p. 194, Pirate Bosun: "Boatswain" and "Bosun" mean the same thing and are pronounced the same (see p. 137, Bosun). Rename one of them.
p. 194, Pirate Bosun: Under Terrifying Visage, capitalize "charisma".
Under Unarmored Defense, capitalize "dexterity" and "constitution".
p. 194, Pirate Crew: Under Sneaking Surround, "Any creature ending its turn adjacent" should be "When any creature ends its turn adjacent".
pp. 194-195, Pirate Enforcer: Under Multiattack, "lance" should be "spear".
p. 195, Pirate First Mate: Under Direct Crew, "is within hearing distance of the pirate first mate can see" should be "visible to the first mate and able to hear him". This ability is very powerful, so should probably be a reaction(and thus only usuable one per round).
Under Special Gear, delete the comma at the end of the line (or supply the missing text?).
Under Sneak Attack, both instances of "Name" should be "first mate".
Under Multiattack, "heavy crossbow" should be "dagger".
p. 196, Pirate Guard: "Brute" should be bold (and italic).
Under Glaive and Heavy Crossbow, "if it's a creature" should simply be "the target". "DC10" should be "DC 10".
p. 196, Pirate Officer: Under Tools, delete the period at the end of the line.
Under Battle Cry, delete the space between both instances of "piper" and "'s" (apostrophe-S).
Under Inspire, insert "(5/day)".
Under Multiattack, insert "The" before "piper".
p. 198, Pirate Port Defenders: Under The Best Defense, delete the ", targets" immediately after "reach".
p. 198, Pirate Sharpshooter: Under Longsword, damage should be "5 (1d8+1), or 6 (1d10+1) if used with two hands."
pp. 198-199, Pirate Sniper: This entry exactly duplicates the Pirate Sharpshooter immediately before it, except for alignment. Delete one of them, and leep the short paragraph of
p. 199, Pistol Pirate: The ability score line is missing the horizontal line under the scores.
Under Tools, either replace "you know" with a real tool kit, or delete the entire line.
In the flavor text after the stats, "Their barrel" should be "the barrel".
pp. 199-200, Rum-Runner: Under Drunken master, capitalize "master".
Under Special Gear, neither the Monster Manual nor the Pirate Campaign Compendium give stats for monkeys. The closest match is the baboon (MM 318, Small), which is larger than an average monkey (Tiny).
Under Unarmored Defense, delete the space in "rum- runner".
Under Multiattack, "Name" should be "The rum-runner".
In the last sentence of the paragraph ater the stat block, "He" should be "It".
pp. 201-201, Sailor: "Belaying Pin" should be bold (and italic).
In campaigns without guns, or where guns are very expensive, replace the Pistol with another weapon, such as a crossbow.
In the paragraph after the stat block, insert "for" after "paid".
pp. 201-202, Pontus (Tidepool Dragon): Under Armor Class, add "(natural armor)".
Delete the Condition Immunities line. Dragons lack immunity to paralysis in 5E.
Under Innate Spellcasting, insert ", +4 to hit with spell attacks" after "spell save DC 12".
Under Claws, do not bold the sentence starting "While grappling...."
Under Fire Breath, "DC13" should be "DC 13".
In the text after Pontus's stat block, the pronouns are not a consistent gender. The illustration shows a male(-presenting) shaman, so change the neuter pronouns to masculine.
p. 203, Slave Pit Master: Under Unarmed Strike, "Melee Weapon Attack" and "Hit" should be italicized.
pp. 203-204, Tattooed Pit Champion: "Brute" should be bold (and italic).
Under Terrifying Visage, both instances of "intimidation" should be "Charisma (Intimidation)". Capitalize "charisma".
Under Unarmored Defense, capitalize "dexterity" and "constitution".
Under Disarming Attack, italicize "Melee Weapon Attack" and "Hit".
pp. 204-205, Undercover Assassin: Under Tools, "poisoners" should be "poisoner's".
In the paragraph after the stat block, "shipboard" needs a noun to modify.
p. 205, Wandering Watersinger: Under Combat Inspiration, "Alliteratively." should be "Alternatively,".
"Shanty of Rest" should be bold (and italic).
Under Multiattack, insert a colon after "attacks".
pp. 205-206, Wavemistress: Guilded Strike and War God's Blessing should be indented under Channel Divinity (and the latter should be bold).
Under Water Sight, "providing" should be "provided".
Under Spellcasting and Multiattack, "Its/its" should be "Her/hers". (This character is a wavemistress.)
In the paragraph after the stat block, delete the initial "A" and capitalize "sensitive". Change "save" to "safe".
p. 206, Waverider Scoundrel: Under Spirited Charge, capitalize "Charge". Insert a comma after "mounted".
pp.206-207, Glory (Hippocampus): "Waterbreathing" should be "Water Breathing" (cf. p. 277, Hippocampus).
Delete the Multiattack entry; "Name" has not been filled in, and Glory lacks claw or dagger attacks.
In the paragraph after Glory's stat block, the pronouns are not a consistent gender. Change them to masculine, and capitalize the first word of the second sentence.
Chapter 8: Cutthroats & Crew (p. 208)
p. 209, The Seagrave's Fang: In the first paragraph, "sharktooth" should be "shark tooth".
In the second paragraph, delete the period after "roleplaying game". See pp. 96-97 for sailing ship statistics, and p. 101 about smuggling compartments. The sample modified ship on pp. 101-102 would also be suitable; just change the crew listing to match.
pp. 210-211, Jenna Ironflame, Master Gunner: The description in the text states that her patch is over her right eye, but the illustration shows it over her left.
Change "eye, she" to "eye. She".
"Bullrush" should be "Bull Rush".
Her Daredevil and Daredevil Boots traits do not match how the item in the sidebar works.
Under Multiattack, the second half of the first sentence should be in parentheses, and the second sentence added to it.
p. 211, New Magic Item: Daredevil Boots: "+21" should be "+1" (see the original daredevil boots in Pathfinder RPG Ultimate Equipment). In addition, opportunity attacks work differently in 5E: you only provoke one if you move out of an enemy's threatened space, not simply for moving within those spaces. That makes the +1 bonus to attacks hard to earn unless you first move away from your target, then back adjacent the same round.
pp. 211-213, Lachlan Chardet, First Mate: In the first paragraph on p. 212, the comma after "institution" should be a period.
In the last sentence before the stat block, delete the second "under a".
In the header of thre stat bloc, add "CHARDET" after "LACHLAN".
The first line of Skills should not be indented.
Under Languages, replace Aklo with Deep Speech. (Aklo is a Pathfinder-only language; Deep Speech fills a very similar niche in 5E.)
Under Pirate, "too" should be "to".
Dirty Trick is clearly based on the Pathfinder feat of the same name (see Pathfinder RPG Advanced Player's Guide), so should have an equivalent list of conditions that can be imposed: blinded, deafened, frightened, poisoned, or restrained.
Swinging Reposition is not used to charge. Delete the reference to scout's charge. Delete the "the" before "Catch Off-Guard".
pp. 213-214, Maygen, Ship's Mage: Under Before Combat, shock shield only lasts until the end of the caster's next turn, so she should usually wait to cast it as a reaction.
pp. 214-215, Redda Amestari, Lookout: In the third paragraph after the box of descriptive text, insert "a" before "seedy".
Under Armor Class, do not capitalize "Leather Armor".
As a lookout, she should be trained in Perception!
Under Longbow, "ranged 150/600 ft." should be "range 150/600 ft."
Under Tactics, Redda has no Special Gear entry to list her thunderstone and smokesticks. Insert "while" after "target her,".
pp. 216-217, Rukaia, Ship's Surgeon: In the main text, Rukaia is described as a tengu with that race's knack for languages, but her stat black makes her a kenku with that race's inability to speak except through mimicry. This book is converted from the Pathfinder version, and there is a tengu among the sample characters in Chapter 6, so use the rules on p. 167 (New Race: Tengu) to make Rukaia that race.
Under Pirate Queen's Glory, change the hyphens to either em-dashes or parentheses.
Under 2nd-level spells, italicize the "l" in "lesser".
Under During Combat, delete the sentence about channels (channeling energy is a Pathfinder class feature, and Rukaia has been given no Channel Divinity powers). Delete "domain" after "copycat".
pp. 217-218, "Smiling" Seth Farharbor, Navigator: In the first sentence on p. 218, delete the "and" after "conditions".
Change "port, the bird named Tukama" to "port. The bird, named Tukama,".
pp. 218-220, Tylara, Ship's Mate: Indent the second and third paragraphs after the boxed descriptive text.
Under Wild Shape, "losses" should be "loses".
pp. 220-222, Captain Valenya Thale: In the third paragraph after the boxed descriptive text, "learnt the" should be "learned"; "of art" should be "of the art".
Under Armor Class, leather lamellar armor and bucklers are not found in the 5E core rules; these are Pathfinder items. Treat leather lamellar as hide armor, and a buckler as a shield, for a total AC of 15.
Under Dazzling Display, "for" should not be italicized.
Under During Combat, there is no shaken condition in 5E; use the frightened condition.
pp. 222-223, Wivierell, Carpenter: Under Armor Class, 5E does not use the masterwork quality. (And the masterwork quality does not improve AC in Pathfinder.) Hide armor plus his Dex equals 15.
Under Hook Hand, delete "or range 20/60 ft."
Under Before Combat, italicize "oil of slipperiness".
p. 223, New Magic Item: Traveler's Any-Tool: Which NPC in this chapter uses this item?
pp. 224-231, The Cutthroats: Capitalize each word in the character name and role headers in this section.
pp. 225-227, Barassa Kraal, the witch doctor: Under Charnel Manuscript, insert "a" before "torture".
Under 1st-level spells, insert "(see page 43)" after "restore corpse".
Under Revelation, "to-hit" should be "spell attack". Few 5E spells require both spell attack rolls and saves (ray of enfeeblement is one example).
Under During Combat, "his inflict spells" should be "inflict wounds".
pp. 227-228, Harkka Rustfang, wereshark chieftain: Insert "by" after "scarred both".
Under Shapechanger, delete the comma after "Harkka". Charge each "it" to "he", and "its" to "his".
Under Before Combat, magic fang is a Pathfinder spell but is not found in 5E. Either use the parenthetical note as written, or delete the potion.
p. 228, Naanee: This stat block is identical to the megalodon entry on p. 294, except that the swallowing effect has some difference.
pp. 228-229, Sedale "Landshark" Silvertooth: Under Spellcasting and During Combat, thorn body is treated as a 3rd-level spell, but is normally 4th level.
Under Morale, delete the comma after "either".
pp. 229-230, Wereshark Bloodrager: Delete the second sentence; these creatures lack Pathfinder rage powers.
pp. 230-231, Wereshark shaman: Under 2nd-level spells, italicize "slipstream".
Under 4th-level spells, watery sphere does not appear in the Player's Handbook or the Pirate Campaign Compendium.
Chapter 9: Pieces of Eight (p. 232)
p. 233, Captain Beryl: An undine is a Pathfinder race, and is called an aquan tiefing in this book (see p. 161, Additional Rules: Variant Race: Aquan [Tiefling]).
pp. 234-235, Captain Falthren Pullusilva: In the first paragraph, insert "a" before "sapphire".
pp. 236-237, Captain "Firehawk" Dante: The ifrit is a Pathfinder race. Use the fire genasi race from Elemental Evil Player's Guide.
Capitalize "pirate isles", as is done throughout the rest of this book.
Label the map "The Glorious Phoenix".
p. 238, Captain Grillana Skitterdown: Ratfolk and rat-kings are Pathfinder creatures, not 5E.
pp. 240-241, Captain Josiah Mercurio: Italicize the ship's name, "Stygian Spear".
pp. 242-243, Captain Lorros Zyldan: In the map title, insert an apostrophe in "Bastards".
pp. 244-245, Captain Mergar the Deathless: Catfolk are a Pathfinder race; for 5E, use tabaxi (from Volo's Guide to Monsters).
pp. 246-247, Captain Sayar the Strong: The clockwork leviathan can be found on p. 265.
Chapter 10: Monsters of the Sea (p. 250)
The bold text at the start of paragraphs in the main text should be italic as well as bold, per Monster Manual usage.
New languages appearing in this chapter include Asquenti and Benthoniri. New languages appearing elsewhere in the book include Ancient (pp. 357-359, 369), Runic Imperial (p. 369), and Vegepygmy (p. 327; non-verbal).
In the first sentence on p. 251, "Srd" should be "SRD".
[in progress]
p. 257, Asquenti: "Toxin Intolerance" should be bold (and italic).
pp. 258-259, Benthonir: "Kraken Cultists" and "Mutations" should be bold (and italic).
p. 266, Conch Tree: "Cadaverous Reproduction" should be bold (and italic).
pp. 267-269, Deep One: At the top of the second column on p. 267, "Deep One Bishop" should be bold (and italic).
p. 269, Deep One Hybrid Cultist [stat block]: Hold Breath should be left-justified.
p. 275, Giant, Ocean: Capitalize the second word of "musical conches" and "Ocean rulers".
p. 280, Invertebrate, Dire Seastar: Capitalize "too" in "One too Many Mouths".
p. 294, Megalodon Shark [stat block]: Under Bite, "nightgarm" should be "shark" or "megalodon".
p. 295, Shrimp, Giant Mantis: Karkinoi and shark eater crabs are Pathfinder monsters that were not converted here.
pp. 291-292, Seaweed Siren [stat block]: The part of the stat block on p. 291 has not been formatted properly.
Under Languages, Aklo does not appear in 5E, only in Pathfinder. Change it to Deep Speech.
Our Sprightly Ship (p. 303)
No notes.
Chapter 11: Adventures (p. 304)
Spices and Flesh: A 4th-level adventure (p. 304)
[in progress]
We Lost One Mate (p. 304)
In the chorus, "her" should be "him".
Tarin's Crown: A 6th-level adventure (p. 320)
[in progress]
pp. 327-328, Assassin Vine: Under Languages, replace "None" with an em-dash.
Raid on the Emperor's Hand: An 8th-level adventure (p. 336)
[in progress]
pp. 340-341, Moving the Loot: Move the table header to p. 341.
p. 351, Galtus Ossian: Under Languages, capitalize "draconic".
Scourge of the Steaming Isle: A 9th-level adventure (p. 352)
[in progress]
pp. 357-358, Akoria, Gillman Shama; p. 358, Gillman War Chief; pp. 358-359, Gillman Tribal Hero; and p. 359, Gillman Tribal Warrior: Outside of this scenario, gillmen should replace the Ancient language with Deep Speech (the language of aboleths, who in their PAthfinder roots, were responsible for the race's creation).
Fort Scurvy: A 14th-level adventure (p. 372)
[in progress]
p. 415, 10. Captain's Cabin (Challenge 8): Under Creatures, move the superscript "SRD" from "Hector" to "Homonculus".
Chapter 12: Distant Shores (p. 420)
p. 425, Aba of Fair Winds: In the first bullet point, "surival" should be "Survival".
pp. 427-435, Arctic: These conditions also apply to the Antarctic Circle.
pp. 431-432, Polar Night and the Midnight Sun: The patterns in Table 12-01 are true for the northern polar regions. For the Antarctic, shift the Earth Month column by six months. (Note that the solstices are offset six months in the northern and southern hemispheres, as they are defined by the length of day and night.)
p. 432, Ice Ship: Under Ice Cruiser, Large creatures (10 ft. x 10 ft., or 4 squares) take up the space of four Medium creatures (one 5 ft.x 5 ft. square), while a Huge creature (15 ft x 15 ft., or 9 squares) takes up the space of two Large creatures.
p. 434, Whalebone Helm: This helm cannot be both "whalebone" and "made from the skull of a walrus".
p. 436, Divine Wind: Delete the Saving Throw/Spell Resistance line; this is a holdover from the Pathfinder spell format.
p. 438, Typhoon Fan: The length of the line of wind is not given. (The gust of wind spell is 60 ft. long and 10 ft. wide. The typhoon fan's line is half as wide, and far more damaging, so 30 feet long seems a reasonable limit.)
pp. 438-439, Gifts of Dragons, Gifts of Nirvana: The last line of the first paragraph says "one of the feats in this section", but only one feat is given.
p. 439, Sacred Scroll of Language: Italicize every instance of the item's name.
pp. 439-441, South Pacific: Bold the "Shields" that begins the fifth paragraph.
p. 441, Bloody Boomerang: The application of any healing magic should also stop the bleeding damage.
pp. 441-442, Clever Boomerang: Replace the comma after "thrown weapon" with an em-dash.
p.442, Ricochet Boomerang: Italicize each instance of the item's name.
The third sentence, and the fourth-fifth sentences, seem redundant; choose one, and delete the other.

In the second paragraph, "envelop its" should be "envelope you".
In the third paragraph, "taking" should be "take".
p. 443, Hei Tiki Amulet: Italicize the item's name.
pp. 443-444, Possum-Skin Cloak: In the last sentence, italicize "tiny hut".
Open Game License (p. 445)
Page 445 is the start of the OGL, so should not have a chapter number in the margins.
In section 15. Copyright Notice:
The Hypertext d20 Srd is listed twice (p. 445, column 4). "Srd" should be "SRD".
The Book of Experimental Might is listed twice (p. 445, column 4, and p. 446, column 4).
In the Ultimate Equipment entry (p. 446, columns 3-4), delete "(Ogl)". "Rpg" should be "RPG".
In the Tome of Horrors Iii entry (p. 446, column 4), "Iii" should be "III" and "Tsr" should be "TSR".
Should Trail of the Apprentice (cited on pp. 158, 176, and elsewhere) be added to the Copyright Notice?
Tim's Appendices
The Pirate Campaign Compendium lacks an index, and the Table of Contents does not provide a list of maps, sidebars, or tables. Tim's Appendices: Additional Rules summarize those entries, as well as giving an index of new material (races, feats, magic items, etc.) that are located in sidebars, adventures, etc., rather than in the book's main chapter or section for that game element.
My initial reaction to the book can be found in my blog post, "Kickstarter and Me: 2019 Update" (2/25/2019).
