Lucy Weberling
Lucy's 2011 Autobiography
This first part of my bio was written for a myspace bio - So it’s mostly about music- Then I get into my personal “stuff”.
Lucy Weberling ( aka Nix, Andersen ), lead singer and rhythm guitar player of Lucy 'n Dez Guys has spent a lifetime in music. Born into a very musical family, there was singing and music all around in her youth.- Piano lessons, church and school choirs, bands, orchestra, and singing harmony on the many trips with her sister and mother. She sang roles in musical comedies in high school ( Westport, CT ) and college - Oklahoma, Flower Drum Song, The Mikado, Emporer’s New Clothes, - Sorority song leader at SMU in Dallas, TX., where she earned a BM in Music Education, with an emphasis on piano and voice.
After learning to play the guitar, Lucy sang in a folk duo in college with, Jeff Nix, the soon- to -be father of her kids, Kitsy and Tucker.( She still plays occasional eclectic music gigs with her son, Tucker) After a short musical stint in California in the 60’s, they moved to Tulsa, OK.,where they sang in various clubs- Singing folk, country rock, soft rock and all out Rock and Roll. They also ran Cain’s Ballroom in the mid 70’s, bringing in groups like David Allen Coe, New Grass Revival, Country Gazette, BB King, JJ Cale.
In the early 70’s the bluegrass bug attacked Lucy- From childhood memories of visits to Kentucky to visit family. -Coal mines, those lonesome harmonies, banjo, fiddle, guitar. A huge influence has been Sam Bush and NewGrass Revival- Mixing Bluegrass with Rock. Lucy played in a bluegrass band, The Blueweed Boys, during the late 70’s, and continued with bluegrass and classic Country with her then husband, banjo player Mark Andersen..
During the 90’s Lucy played in an acoustic duo with Terry Bentley ( then Dennis) - Lucy on guitar, Terry on upright bass. They were the first wave of present-day acoustic women pickers in the Tulsa, Ok. area. - With a large following in northeastern Oklahoma.
In 2005 Lucy owned and operated a music venue in Osage County, OK., Crossroads Sound Stage . The venue offered all kinds of eclectic folkabilly rockgrass, as Lucy calls it.
Lucy has taught music in public school as well as pre-school and continues her music teaching with her 3 year old Grandson, Andrew, who plays-at banjo, fiddle and ukelele - and DRUMS!!Oft times with his Dad, Tucker.
Presently Lucy , as a 500 hour Kripalu Certified Yoga teacher, leads Yoga sessions at Bluegrass Festivals all over the country, as well as teaching yoga classes in the Tulsa, Ok. area..She is a member of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Leadership Bluegrass Class of 2008.
Besides singing in the All Souls Unitarian church choir, she plays i n an Old Time Band ( Prairie Breeze String Band - she actually has taken up the banjo), as well as picks bluegrass with friends whenever she gets the chance. Lucy’s instrumentation is mostly rhythm guitar- Martin D28, Collings D2 , Fender Telecaster and a Stelling White Star Banjo.- And , of course, her voice.
This new love of Rockabilly music is actually the old love - Stemming from Junior high and high school music- The tunes that she grew up with- Rockabilly combines the best of the hillbilly sound of country and bluegrass with the rhythm and beat and soul of old time rock and roll. Lucy ‘nDezGuys adds new original slants to some of those songs, as well as writing some originals. This band, Lucy ‘nDezGuys is a total collaberation of all the musical influences in Lucy’s life. The perfect band, as she calls it.-- The Beat Goes On.
Staples folks: The former bio was written by me for the myspace page for our Rockabilly band. Now for more personal stuff:
My sister, Janet, class of ‘63, and I also play together in an acoustic group, Occassionally Seen, because we only occasionally play at Church Chapel ( All Souls Unitarian in Tulsa) She and her husband and I camp, hike together. We’ve traveled to many National parks - Which we love!! I was so fortunate that Janet moved to Tulsa in 71 so that we could be together again. Then my folks moved here after Dad retired in 78 - So that had us all together again. So lucky.
My life has definitely been “sectionalized”, as I’m sure many of yours have been. After leaving Conn., I went to college in Dallas, at SMU (huge culture shock), joined Delta Gamma fraternity, donned the high hair and temporarily became a southern “ belle” (not quite, for sure!) They all thought I was so “socially advanced” compared to the Texas gals. But I adapted, joined the Folk society, was there when Kennedy was assassinated, joined civil rights marches, and all that stuff that was going on then. SMU was actually the first SWC school to have a black football player! Jeff and I moved to Tulsa after he got out of Law School, settled down had kids, etc., etc. Active in politics until getting totally bummed after Kent State. We split in ‘77, then dated and married Mark, the Iowa farmer/cowboy/welder/ banjo player/etc. Fun farm life - Raised cattle, chickens, horses, mules, large gardens. We split up in ‘95. Still good friends with him -
I live on 18 acres in the woods- Osage hills- Just north of Tulsa. MY daughter lives in the small town near me, son lives in South Tulsa. Mom and Dad passed away a few years ago. My sister and I live close, all get together really often - Cookouts, events, baseball games. I take my grandson to as many music things as I can-
I have the “usual “ aches and pains of a 67 year old. Hip issue, lower back. But my yoga keeps me going and okay. Also an avid bike rider. Swimming some these days also. Have a pontoon boat at the marina a few miles away. Really nice lake- Skiatook Lake.Yes, we have lakes, hills, mountains, trees, etc. here in Oklahoma! I have an RV that I take to festivals. Except this year I’ll be taking my Prius on trips to save the gas money. Lots of travel for me these days.: Texas and North Carolina in April - Kentucky, Virginia, NY area in July,- Minn. and Kentucky in August. Tennessee in October. And hopefully, California in august also.
Keeping active with my yoga. I’m a 500 hour Professional Yoga teacher. I’m really involved with Chair Yoga for the folks who don’t feel comfortable getting up and down from the floor. The Festival Yoga is my favorite tho! I get in free, backstage passes, artists amenities, etc.- Lots of fun and getting to pick as much as I want to. Music is really my love- And Family and travel.
I can’t wait to catch up with you all in June. I really love the memories of high school- Wow! Did we have fun. And how lucky for us to grow up in such a wonderful, advanced community and area, with so many possibilities.
I hope someone brings a guitar that I can play- Don’t want to travel with mine on the plane.
Lucy’s Update (2021)
Lots of traveling and lots of time with my grandson in the last 10 years. Not as much “playing out” as the former time, but still many jam sessions, lots of Bluegrass festivals, lots of Yoga sessions at festivals.
It’s almost hard to remember the times before the wretched Covid, but there were lots of good times. I go to Bluegrass festivals in upper state NY, MN, KY, TX- and lead Yoga sessions at some of them. I still live out in the country about 15 miles from downtown Tulsa. Tulsa has become a very cool place to live in the last years- The Woody Guthrie Center, The Bob Dylan Center ( he donated all of his archives to the center here, which is being built now). And the marvelous Gathering Place, a world class park. This year Tulsa is commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre (was called “Riot”, so that no insurance could be collected. I spend a lot of time in Tulsa - Now that I have a Prius, I can travel mucho for not much moolah. I go to the Unitarian U Church here- The largest one in the country- Over 2,000 members- Some virtual. I’ve been very political, as usual, for the last few years - as I was back in the 60s-70s.
I love to travel. And, luckily, have friends and family in the south, midwest, Colorado, CA, and northeast, so it is fun to visit friends, and see wonderful places. I really miss my yearly visit with Beau, as well as my every other year with Calvin and Jann. Hopefully will get going again this summer. BUT- at least during covid times I have spent a lot of time with my grandson and his buddies.
For the last 6 year3s I have been a docent at the Joseph H . Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, the largest Nature Conservancy project.- 40,000 acres. We have 2,000 bison, and practice range management that is very environmentally important- Prescribed burns, bison grazing.
I still play and sing bluegrass , as well as other kinds of eclectic acoustic music- Guitar and Mandolin - with friends- and occasional gigs for fun. I’m starting to play my piano again a bit, as well as take voice lessons- show tunes, etc., - Just to keep my voice “working” right .
My big loves, of course, are my sister ( Janet Weberling, now known as Holly Romine- Staples ’63) and my 2 kids, Kitsy and Tucker, their spouses, and my grandson, Andrew. He’s quite a baseball player - Also football, basketball,
guitar. But baseball is the biggie. We spend a lot of time together, with his buddies- kayacking, swimming, hiking a bit. I am REALLY fortunate that they live close to me.
My sis and I take many hiking trips together.- We go to Arkansas once a month for overbite camping. GREAT State Parks there - Then each year we go on a long 12 day trip-Mostly in KY, TN, NC, VA- We love the Blueridge Parkway and the AT. For a few years we were backpacking, but that got too hard. Now tenting, BUT I’m looking for a class B camper van, so it will even be easier.
At some point I will need to move to a cohousing situation, but too hard to think much about right now. I just got back from a short trip to Padre Island with 2 Minneapolis pals, and am going to Tucson for a week in a few weeks- again with other Minneapolis pals. i love Minneapolis, BUT my family is here.
I am really looking forward to seeing you all on our zoom, and HOPEFULLY we can gather in person sometime this summer or fall. i think a nice Combo Beach gathering would be ideal- Everyone bring their own food and drink, chairs, and call it real. Charlie can bring the music.
