Kerry's Autobiography
(Updated 2021)
One might say that there is barely a career I haven’t been in since graduating from Staples. After a summer teaching tennis on the Cape, I went to Colby Sawyer for two years. Immediately following graduation, I hit the streets of New York and went to work for Time Magazine in a variety of capacities – book research, circulation, public affairs and a 3 year stint in the London office doing research on the “World’s Wild Places.” I returned to New York and Time. A year after my return, I was offered a position with First Boston….soon to be merged into Credit Suisse First Boston. I founded their Special Events Department which rapidly expanded during the “roaring 80’s” to 35 in staff. Concurrently, I was the Secretary of the First Boston Foundation Trust, the company’s philanthropic department. I also enrolled in Hunter’s night school and received a B.A., magna cum laude in their special honors program.
I left Credit Suisse after the “crash” of ‘87 and tried several careers – all concurrent….residential appraising, real estate sales and as marketing partner in an advertising boutique. I moved into the non-profit world and worked as the development director for the Hartford Ballet (non-existent now) and from there to the New Britain Museum of American Art. While there, I started the annual craft show on the grounds of the museum and it continues to this day.
I got the call to go back to Wall Street and to Credit Suisse (just as my wallet was suffering). After 1.5 years there I moved to Bear Stearns and the rest is financial history.
I was living in New York and commuting to CT on weekends. After the demise of Bear Stearns, I moved fulltime to CT and joined Wm. Raveis R.E. as a mortgage broker.
I retired from there and moved to Pinehurst NC. I married the brother of a fellow Staples graduate, Pat O’Neil McCarthy (now deceased). We both golf and I play pickleball. I am(was) a worldwide traveler – have been round the world and then some. I travel with an old college buddy who resides in London. My husband does not go on these trips. Passionate about politics with a decidedly liberal bias.
