Clifton Mills
Clif's 2011 Autobiography
After Staples graduation, I attended Norwalk Technical Institute (now Norwalk Community College), got my ASEE and went to work. While my first interest was radio broadcasting, my work was industrial in nature, temperature controllers and environmental testing.
While at my day job in industry, I worked part time at WMMM, and in 1968 I was offered the job as Chief Engineer, thus starting my broadcast radio career. Then, in 1975, I moved to WNLK in Norwalk, leaving in 1993, when I started broadcast radio consulting, which I continue today. Most recently, I worked for Cox Media Group, based in Milford, 2003 until I retired in 2009.
I lived in Fairfield and Redding, before moving to New Hampshire in 2005, doing the workweek commute to Connecticut.
I returned to Staples in the early 70’s as part of the effort to obtain an FCC license for what is now WWPT. That effort was realized in October of 1973 when the station went on the air, a long way from a wire buried at compo beach! Check out the WWPT website here.:
For those of us that had Nick Georgis for physics, some of us ‘hams’ (amateur radio types) have kept in touch with Mr. G over the years.
I married in 1967 and have two children, Clif III and Polly, now in their early 40’s. Clif III, a Warrant Officer, and wife Beth are based at Ft. Drum, NY (10th Mountain). Clif does IT stuff and is currently in Afghanistan. Polly and husband Kevin have two daughters, Megan, 10, and Rachel, 8. They live close to me providing opportunity to spend time with them.
Meg and I will be in Oklahoma the weekend of June 25th, visiting her grandmother (my X). Thus I will not be able to attend any of the Reunion 50 festivities.
Good wishes to one and all!
Clif's Update (2021)
Another decade is in the history books, and what an ending! And who said you’ll have lots of leisure time once you retire?
I purchased a rail car, a retired “inspection car” that once belonged to Union Pacific, and joined rail car clubs. Cotton Valley Rail Trail Club in Wolfeboro, NH, (www.cottonvalley.org), and North American Rail Car Owners Association, (www.narcoa.org). As with most activities, COVID-19 has put most rail excursions on hold. Great way to learn rail history and operation.
Having been among the founders of WWPT, (www.wwptfm.org), now branding as “Wrecker Radio”, it’s interesting to note they will be celebrating 50 years in October 2023. The seed was planted in 1961, and through several incarnations of “pirate radio”, was licensed in October 1973. WWPT is noted in Paul Boulon’s Activities in our ’61 yearbook, just a vision then.
I’m part of the team rebuilding a pipe organ at the Congregational church in Sanbornton, (www.uccsanbornton.org), where I do the electrical stuff.
In the past decade, Clif III has retired from the Army after a nearly 30 year career, attended Western Illinois University, and is a computer forensics consultant.
Daughter Polly completed her second Masters MSW degree (Boston College) and works for the Concord, NH VNA.
Granddaughter Rachel is finishing high school. Megan, Valedictorian at her high school graduation, is now a Sophomore at RPI, is majoring in Mathematics and Physics.
As Odetta signed on a poster for me after her concert at Staples, Go Well, Stay Well !
