Dick’s Autobiography (2021)
After Staples I went to Delaware Valley College in Doylestown Pa, majoring in ornamental horticulture. After two years of too much fun and not much studying, a very wise Dean of Students suggested I take some time off so I enlisted in the Army for three years. This included a year of duty in Vietnam. After being discharged I returned to DVC to complete my degree. In my senior year I married Karen Jacobson, Staples class of 1965. Returning to Westport in 1969 I worked as a landscape designer and supervisor for a firm in Darien. In 1974 I started my own landscape design and contracting business, Westport Landscaping, which continued until I retired in 2010. I also manage family real estate here in town.
We have two daughters, Whitney, Staples class of 1988 and Tracy, class of 1992. We have three grandkids, the oldest is now at Staples.
I have been active in a number of community activities, including the Town of Westport Beautification Commission, The Westport Tree Board, and Connecticut Notable Trees.
I'm keeping busy in retirement with our Cape Cod house, restoring and refinishing antique furniture, my large vegetable garden, and wood turning.
