Dexter Bullard
Dexter's 2011 Autobiography
I did not graduate as I left sophomore (middle of the) year for Mexico (1959 or so) and then after two years returned back to school at Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, CT and thence on to University of California Berkeley. Then on to UCLA and the Peace Corps-Venezuela (theater program) and back to NYC for an acting career, some soap operas, worry over Vietnam, then some more NYC acting and then back to Loomis as a teacher and then wife left. Then I went to Austin, Texas and started my own repertory company and then backed off that to be a local commercial real estate broker (theater continued for another 20 yrs.) so on like that...more later.
I am here in Torrington, CT now with another wife and working at an engineering company in Danbury.
Dexter’s Update (2021)
Finishing up with my travels, I left UCAL Berkeley and changed campuses to UCLA majoring in theater. After half a year, since there came a theater community developmemt project for latin america centered at UCLA...I left the UN and joined the Peace Corps. right there. Next summer by now I am on the way to Venezuela as a new volunteer. Actually, summer training in Puerto Rico, and then by fall in country in Venezuela. Worked with and directed a local theater company and staged a large production of the company's resident playwright Pedro Riera.
By the following summer, some odd things in the Peace Corps. Venezuela transpired, so I subsequently left the Peace Corps and travelled to Guadalajara, Mex and got married to a Spanish instructor I met in the training in Los Angeles. Then to NYC and attendance at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Graduated in two years and starting acting in off-Broadway and some Soap Operas. Then another change to teaching acting and other duties at The Loomis- Chafee school in Windsor, CT (where I had graduated as a student (also after Staples). I was additionally teaching at and finishing my degree at UCONN, Storrs, CT.
My then wife took off and I had to rethink my next move. So I teamed up with an accomplished artist and filmmaker and book publisher and we both moved to Austin, TX and planned on building a group of companies both in theater and art.
I started renting a downtown studio and invited those for acting classes. I bought another property downtown for my partner's and I Creative studio. We opened two art galleries, one in the front of that building, and another one on the campus western drag, called The Grey Mouse.
I got plenty of students, so found another downtown property and bought that to establish what I thought was to be Austin's first professional theater and renovated one of the buildings and named it The Gaslight Theater.
We did present many memorable productions over a period of 20 years. My assistant took over after about 4 years and renamed it Capital City Playhouse. I went on into Commercial Real Estate and did very well until the real estate collapse (Savings and Loan disaster in 1986)...so I returned to Greenwich, CT and got into mortgage financing. Eventually I was working for Chase Bank.
In 1995 I was hired by Preferred Utilities Mfg. Corp, (an engineering based manufacturer of heating systems for colleges, universities, and power plants) to be a sales executive...and have been so employed to this day...over 25 years now.
How's that for a different life?
