Rodney Hurtuk
Rod's 2011 Autobiography
Following graduation I enlisted in the USAF, under the "buddy plan", with Pete Grieves and Pete Kelley. Needless to say, I never saw those buddies again after basic training. We each went our own ways.
After returning from SE Asia in 1965, I kicked around some and worked with my plumber father, and then at Famous Schools, until it was made clear to me that I needed a degree to get ahead. With my less than strong academic record at Staples, I started at Norwalk CC and ended with a BS from UCONN in 1970.
I began a career at The Aetna Casualty and Surety Co in March 1970, in casualty claims, and stayed there for 25 years, leaving as a Contract Surety Claim Manager. Then, as so many of us did, I went out as a consultant, handling runoff business for a small Westchester NY surety, and then to The Hartford for 7 years, and have been out of it since 2004. It was a good run, and sometimes I miss it.
In 1966 I met Midge, a lovely young lady from Darien, and we were married that same year. We'll celebrate our 45th this November. We now live in a Victorian painted lady, on the Tolland Town Green, and it keeps us busy and young. Our two sons were born when we lived in Vernon, and now live in Tolland and Coventry, as do our three grandchildren. Needless to say, we have a full house for all the holidays.
If anyone is in the area, give us a call, and stop by.
