Paradigm:
She believes that humanity is in the process of evolving. She believes that most people are pretty much sheep, but that a few extraordinary people have the ability to transcend normality and become exceptional. So exceptional that they can bend reality itself. Of those extraordinary people, most never tap into this potential. And even fewer still are able to become Advanced Minds (i.e. Awakened)...either by careful scientific processes that the Technocracy employs or, on occasion, freak accidents (this is how she explains other mages away). These people are the ones who matter the most. Regular people are fine...they make the world go round and all. But they don't really know the score. She doesn't spare a lot of thought for them, although she is not cruel.
Once one becomes an Advanced Mind, you can continue to advance through hard work, mental focus, and continued application of Science! She's made some advancements this way...but she knows she's just touching the surface of things.
Personality:
She's got a lot of fire and spirit. She comes across kind of rude and rough and tumble...she's a soldier through and through. She's not a bad person, but she has some tangible impatience with others that can sometimes rub people the wrong way. She's had some hard knocks...and that's instilled in her a desire to protect (and to bash heads), but also a distrust of others...and especially of others in positions of power. She was loyal to the technocs...but it was always with a faint air of surprise that they weren't screwing her over. The fact that they delivered on all of their promises (training her, job with benefits, superpowers, support and understanding)...it always seemed a little too good to be true. She's now a mixture of surprised/not surprised to realize they were screwing her over...and pissed because of that feeling of betrayal. She still believes in the scientific ideals they instilled in her, however...she's just not going to die for them. Nope. Not for anyone. What comes next she'll figure out tomorrow...if there is one.
She respects straight-shooting in conversation, and action over words (which she tends to see as waffling). However, she also has learned the benefit of scrying...and through that has an added appreciation for taking time to fully understand a situation before acting. She is...slowly...learning patience and prudence. She is also a lot smarter than people give her credit for. Because of her impatience and tendency to roll her eyes at academics people tend to assume she's stupid. Which is far from the truth. Thus being able to figure out the pills...even if she didn't realize they were placebos. And she has, in the Void Engineer training, also gained the basics of understanding certain scientific principles and hands on technology skills. People are often surprised how quickly she learns new skills. When she's actually motivated to give a damn, that is.
History:
~Was in the army. Thus all the combat training.
~Truck she was in was hit by an IED. Big explosion. She was the only survivor...and due to part of a building falling on her, she was trapped in the rubble for over a day. (Thus the Claustrophobia. And the missing eye.)
~She nearly died. In a fevered/injured dreamscape, she Awakened. Was rescued because of this by the Technocs.
~Progenitors used Science! to heal her (Life magick)...including some advanced pills/medicine
~Because of this, she believes that they Awakened her...in her mind, they opened up the potential within her. She believes she never would have Awakened without their help.
~She also believes that the medicine they gave her fuels her more advanced mental abilities (a lie the technocs didn't abuse her of because it was a easy way of controlling her). Her handlers kept her on placebo pills to give her foci...so that she would more easily be able to access her magick, and also so she would believe she needs them. So, being a distrustful sort who doesn't like being dependent on others, she snooped and looked up in the computers the chemical makeup of the pills. She learned they weren't too different from most commonly prescribed antidepressants (because they were placebos, not actual magick)...so she is fully prepared to acquire her own once she goes rogue.
~They also trained her in meditative practices, btw, so that she would be able to access her abilities in combat situations...without having to fumble around for foci...so now it's a combo of being able to do the things she's most comfortable with with just some focus (a la Prof X's intense stare)...for more complicated things or for effects outside of her comfort zone, she goes to the pills.
~She was recruited into the Void Engineers because she showed an aptitude fr Spirit mag...erm Dimensional Science, which made taking her off into the Umbr...erm Outer Space more feasible than it is for most Technocrats. And the fact that she was combat trained made her an ideal candidate for the more rough and tumble assignments.
~So she's been doing that for the past several years. Fairly loyal. Believes the party line. But she also has always had a lingering distrust of authority and a cynism that makes it easy to believe that people are taking advantage of you.
~So when she starts to pick up some emotional turbulence from other crewmembers (using Mind 1) it makes her suspicious. She does some probing, both verbally and telepathically, and realizes this is a suicide mission.
~Survivor nature. She believes in the Technocracy...but not enough to die for them. And she is royally pissed that they are setting her up to be an unwitting martyr. Fuck that noise. She's out.
