Image: Sean looks like someone who does most of his shopping at second hand stores or good will.  It’s a carefully cultivated image.  He stands about 5’11’’ with short cut hair.  His arms and legs are covered with various tattoos.  When he speaks with people he looks directly at them, but creates the impression he isn’t interacting with an equal but a specimen to be studied and understood.

Personality:  Sean is a dark person who is open-minded about people but unhesitating in passing judgement on those who fail to live up to his expectations.  The world is built upon relationships, but too often a person is willing to put themselves ahead of other people, violating their responsibility to others all in the name of convenience or responsibility or God.  His wit is biting and cruel, but he has a soft spot for those at the bottom of society’s ladder, and can be quite generous at surprising times.

History:

The Cabot’s were an old but respected New England family that could trace their ancestry to the founding of the Massachusetts colony.  The family came to the colonies from England after they had been pushed out of the East Indian Trading Company, which they had helped found.  Re-establishing themselves in the “New World,” the family became part of America’s economic foundations.

The Cabot family sees itself as a new aristocracy as defined by the Founding Fathers, a gentry class based on education and ability rather than breeding.  Since they first stepped onto the shores of America, the family has amassed a degree of wealth and power which makes it one of the most powerful families in the world.  It also enjoys the benefits members skilled in both Hedge magic and Awakened spheres.

Family members with the potential to use magic are identified when they are young, and sent to the best school to receive an education which includes law, finance, literature, and several more esoteric topics.  If one Awakens, they are assigned a private “tutor” who functions as a mentor to instruct them in the more advanced curriculum of sphere magics. (The Cabot family function essentially as an Orphan conspiracy)

Sean Cabot was always an odd person in the family.  Rumors had it that he was a child of the fae, that his mother had an affair with a fairy prince as part of a deal which ultimately soured.  He was always an outsider within the family, which in turn gave him a degree of freedom few children had.  He was allowed to indulge in his love of mysteries, everything from Sam Spade and Sherlock Holmes to Spencer and Bones.

When Sean was 12 a friend was kidnapped while riding home.  The police investigation would last over 15 years as officers “did everything in their power, exhausting all possibilities” without success.  The kidnapping would haunt Sean, as would not knowing what had happened to his friend.  The boy would grow into a man, and this obsession with not just what had happened, but how it could have occurred.  He would Awaken in the library at college one night over a copy of the Hound of the Baskervilles as he tried to force an explanation into the unexplainable.

Sean returned home solve the case of his missing friend in a few days.  It hadn’t even required magic.  Sloppy police work, incompetence, laziness, and the general stupidity of the locals had led to his friend’s killer to walk as a free mean for over a decade.  Perhaps if the police had done their job right, his friend would be alive.

Sean’s Awakening was unexpected, and while some members at first sought to fit him in with the overall vision of the Cabot’s, it was quickly decided to embrace what fate had offered, and allow the young man to pursue his own agenda, with the understanding that he should be available when needed by the family.

Today, Sean Cabot consults with law enforcement all around the world with a reputation as someone who can untangle complex and unusual cases, crimes that might involve either the occult, fringe science, or anything normally unexplainable.  He has good relations with the Traditions, and is cordial with the Technocracy, which sees his efforts as valuable in maintain the status quo, even if they disapprove of his methods.

There is something wrong with the world, something sick, and for whatever reason the Union cannot see it and the Traditions won’t.  Gideon hopes to expose the truth, whatever the cost, lest Reality crumble into ash.

Allies:

Special Agent Thomas Quinn (FBI) – Special Agent Quinn and Cabot first met when the later was investigating the theft of 100 barrels of maple syrup, a theft which threatened to cost a family their farm as the FBI was looking into Human Labor Trafficking.  The 2 cases eventually intersected with the Satan’s Paladins motorcycle club.  The investigations resulted in over 20 arrests and was the spark to a long term friendship.  Agent Quinn and Cabot have worked together many times since that case, with Gideon being employed as a consultant.  Quinn has also helped to open doors with law enforcement across the country, acting as a reference with locals when a case sparks interest.

Laura Dannon – Heiress to Dannon Pharmaceuticals, Laura is rich to the point where money means nothing.  Her IQ was measured at genius when she was 4, she graduated college at 12, and earned a doctorate at 21.  While she has become a powerful force in her families company, Laura also began cultivating her contacts and connections to create new challenges for herself by building a criminal empire from the ground up.  Today she styles herself as a concierge to the Underworld, providing luxuries and necessities that are difficult to acquire when one is among the most wanted people in the world.

Laura and Sean’s relationship is difficult to define.  On opposite sides of the law, the two have proven helpful to each other when needed, but both are aware that the day may come when friendship becomes rivalry and the pair will need to come to terms once and for all.

Alternate ID:

Patrick Marlowe – Freelance Photo-journalist – Cabot uses the Marlowe identity when he wishes to keep a lower profile and needs a generic reason for nosing around in places most people might ignore.  Marlowe is a known photographer whose works have appeared in a number of on-line blogs, websites, and even a magazine and newspaper.  His work is known to be unimaginative, but he can be good at being in the right place at the right time which can be helpful when filling space.

Library

Sean has managed to collect/steal a number of physical case files on occult activity around the world since the mid 1800’s.  Many of these files come from law enforcement agencies around the world, but the majority were reported destroyed when SS Headquarters were captured at the end of World War 2.

Retainer

Alexandria “Alex” Collins – Alex Collins had it all.  As the wife to one of the most successful financial planners in New York, she dined at the finest restaurants, helped host charity events which raised millions of dollars, was invited to premiers, and looked down on the little people who wouldn’t work hard to pull themselves up off the street.  Then her husband’s success was exposed as a lie, a Ponzi scheme that had helped fund their lifestyle while stealing from all her their friends.  Alex’s honest declaration that she didn’t know were not believed.  She lost everything, and when Sean found her while tracking down an assassin she was living in a cheap studio apartment and selling sunglasses to tourists at the beach.

Alex Collins is a different person today: humble instead of arrogant, charitable instead of self-indulgent, and driven instead of comfortable.  Cabot gave her a chance when no one else would, taking her on as a legal aide, researcher, and personal assistant.  He pays her a modest amount, but he’s given her more than just a job.  Cabot has given her a way to rebuild her life, and she will never forget that.

Contacts:

Special Agent Robert McNally – Syndicate – Sean views McNally as a contact within the monolithic structure of the Technocracy, able to offer insight on the Unions motives and goals.  McNally sees Cabot as an asset to be used to sniff out deviants and threats to the Technocracy when matters don’t merit a full investigative team.  In a lot of ways, they’re both right, each getting what they need from the relationship.

PARADIGM

Art of Desire

The world is a place of Order built on a foundation of relationships.  In these relationships people have a responsibility to either another individual, an organization, or a society.  When the obligations of these relationships are fulfilled Harmony rings across the world: people are happy, healthy, and safe.  It is the violation of these relationships that brings both Discord and Chaos and threatens to unmake everything.  Humans have tried to bring Harmony to the world through Laws or Philosophy, but too many succumb to greed, anger, or simple expedience.

The quest for Ascension starts with helping those who have been wronged and punishing individuals who bring Discord to the world, while over time learning what role one needs to play themselves.

Psionics: The Cabot family has long taught that they are exceptional, a new type of aristocracy based on merit and education rather than blood alone.  Hard work, education, and discipline are taught to all family members at a young age, and although Sean is considered a black sheep within the family, he still retains this belief in his superiority.  Cultivating one's mind, body, and spirit and bending them to your Will is what sets the family above others.

FOCI

Thought Form:  The idea of a “consulting detective” is powerful in popular culture.  There are TV Shows, movies, novels, and even comic books of the outsider with access to abilities (and even powers) coming to the aide of police and doing the impossible.  Whether its Adrian Monk, Harry Dresden, or Lucifer himself, people have come to expect the impossible from the Consulting Detective.

There's the successful businessman.  The scion of American gentry.  People have ideas of what is possible based upon the image presented.  For Sean, embracing a roll can be a powerful way for the universe to conform to his expectations.

Divine Mathematics & Sacred Geometry:  Math is the true universal language.  It allows people to understand reality and it’s how reality communicates with people.  The angle of a building is just as significant as the radius of a snail’s shell.  Understanding divine mathematics allows a Mage to create a numerical model of the world, and by changing a variable one can change the reality of the world.

Language: The ability to communicate, make connections, and express oneself.  The power of words to heal a broken heart, defend the wrongfully accused, or expose a lie have changed the world in ways both big and small

Meditation: Disciplining the mind while cultivating the soul.  Meditation is the process of setting aside all of the distractions which keep one from focusing on what is truly important.

Eye Contact: The eyes are often seen as windows to the soul.  It can be a way to challenge someone for dominance or losing oneself in the presence of his or her lover.  When covered, a sense of menace and mystery can be created, as a person becomes less of an individual.

Laboratory:  A lab doesn't need to be a place of science.  A banker might have stock reports, a detective could be using case files and a murder board.  A lab is a place where a practitioner can spread out and set up the tools of his or her trade.
