Catherine "Kitty" Mercy Wardwell, went to live with her Grandmother Octavia after a freak gas main explosion burned her parents (Sam and Edith) to death.
Octavia is a witch and a medium and owned a witchcraft shop in Salem, Mass. She also held occasional séances.
Kitty (as her mother used to call her), found an imaginary friend after her parents passed. A girl her age, named Mercy. Mercy dressed in old fashioned clothes and aged as Kitty did.
As Kitty aged, and she left childhood behind, she realized that Mercy was something more, then what she had once thought. Mercy was a ghost.
It was at that point that Kitty told her grandmother, about Mercy. That’s when Octavia told her that Kitty came from a hereditary line of witches and all the women of their family were mediums. Kitty then started helping out at the store after school; which allowed her to start learning the craft.
At 16, she went to a party with a girl friend. An older boy slipped something in her drink, then he and a friend “helped” the poor drunk girl off to a bedroom to “sleep it off”. She regained consciousness, from Mercy yelling at her to wake up. Groggily she became aware that one of the boys was on top of her while the other watched the door. She clawed her attackers face, he screamed and hit her. Something awakened inside of her and invoking the Goddess Hecate, she cursed him for seeing her – that he should never see a pretty girl again. He got off of her in a panic … he was blind. She then cursed the friend for not being a real man, that his manhood would never work again.
Mercy led her out of the house and outside of town, into the woods, to an unmarked grave. A toad was sitting on it, which spoke to Mercy, when they got near. “So, it’s finally time, is it?” Mercy nods and talks Kitty into digging.
Kitty digs up Mercy’s remains and is instructed to take the skull. With it, Mercy can follow her anywhere. Owlbert here, was her familiar, and will now serve Kitty. Together they shall teach Kitty to curve/bend reality to her will.
First she learns about Mercy. Mercy Wardwell is her ancestor. She was born October 3rd, 1673. Her and her parents: Samuel and Sarah, were accused of witchcraft and put on trial. Her parents were found guilty by the court and executed. She was found innocent and released. Unfortunately one of the Celestial Chorus was involved in the trial and knew better. He and his supporters hunted her and hanged her in secret. They set up a look-a-like in her place, to cover their tracks. She was 16. Over the next few years, Mercy fills Kitty’s head with anti-Christian and feminist ideas.
The boys say that they were trying to help her and that she cursed them. No one but Octavia believes her and they are forced to leave town. From there they move to Phoenix. There Granny finds a voodoo priestess who becomes first her business partner and then her wife. Kitty lives and works with them at the store. She teaches classes there occasionally too.
Notes to Storyteller:
Her parents died (honestly or murdered, I'll leave that up to the storyteller as potential plot deovice). She lives with her grandmother, who owns a witchcraft store. Grannie is unawakened, but could he a consore.
She does have a black cat as a pet and she wears cat's eye contacts. Because of the store, she typically dresses in witchy looking clothing.
Her vulgar use of magic during her awakening is the source of her entropic flaw, ala Harry Dresden. High tech items tend to break, if she tries you use them. (Smart phones, PCs, cars made after the early 90s from the day she was born-afterwards.).
