Subject: Template for support of Lyme legislation: Urgent by June 12th

Hello and happy Monday!

Thank you so much for responding to my call for letters in support of the Michigan legislation for Lyme disease. As you know, it was where I contracted Lyme disease so I feel incredibly passionate about helping the state of Michigan to update their standards for patient care around tick-borne illness.

Attached is a template for a letter in support of the bills Representative Karen Whitsett has introduced to be turned into law in the state of Michigan, but we direly need your support before the upcoming hearing on June 13th. Grassroots efforts from our Lyme community to support this is imperative not just for the residents of Michigan, but because it can set standards in other states to follow suit.

The letter is ready to go, simply update the short fields highlighted in yellow.

Here is how you can help:

1. Email: Copy and paste the letter attached in an email and send to the Health Policy Committee members. You can BCC the whole email list, or send individually (emails included in attached document!)

2. Mail: Copy and paste the letter attached and send snail mail to:

3. Social Media: Utilize social media and post your letter on Instagram and Twitter, tagging:

I cannot thank you enough for lending your voice in this fight to take care of citizens suffering due to tick-borne illness. If you have any questions, please send me a note! If you would not mind, please forward me a copy of your letter for a binder I am putting together to present to Michigan's Health Policy Committee at the hearing.

Sending love!

Dear Health Policy Committee Member,

I am writing you today to voice my support on the following four house bills and one concurrent resolution that have been introduced to the Health Policy Committee:

· HB4604requires coverage of Lyme disease testing

· HB4607requires disclosure of Lyme disease information

· HB4608establishes standardized procedure and notification form for diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases

· HB4609Medicaid coverage of Lyme disease testing

· HCR0007A concurrent resolution to urge the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to protect the people of Michigan from Lyme disease by improving efforts to prevent, monitor, diagnose, and treat the disease

As someone who has friends and family that suffer from chronic Lyme Disease, I see the critical need for legislation such as this. While Lyme disease is thought of as a “rare” illness, there are 400,000 new cases of Lyme annually in the U.S. alone. Transferred by ticks, research indicates that the tick population has exploded both in number and geography over the last 15 years. Through animal migration, Michigan has become a known hotbed for infected ticks.

Lyme patients face an incredible injustice, both from the medical community and insurance companies. Physicians lack proper education on how to diagnose Lyme disease, resulting in lack of treatment for thousands and debilitating symptom development for those most inflicted. Without a positive Lyme disease test, many insurance companies will not cover necessary treatment required to live a functioning life. These bills provide a critical starting point for a path to recovery for Michiganders.

Thank you,
