HR 6 Amendments Info

As could be expected, Congressman Andy Harris (Johns Hopkins doctor and legislator who previously gutted a good Maryland State Lyme bill) helped sneak in an amendment in the HR 6 (21st Century Cures Act) that houses the Lyme bill that awards researchers with a "prize" for breakthrough research. How many of his Lyme pals do you think will win an award? We will just have to wait and see.

Additional amendments (not all- just notable ones) that were attached to the Lyme bill/Cures 21st Century Act.

Edwards Statement On 21st Century Cures Act

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 10, 2015

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) today issued the following statement regarding her vote on H.R. 6, the 21st Century Cures Act. The bill passed the House Floor by a vote of 344-77. This legislation creates the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Cures Innovation Fund, which will deliver $8.75 billion in mandatory funding over the next five years.

“This agreement is the product of a compromise, and by definition is imperfect,” Edwards said. “I remain disappointed that right-wing riders, such as infringing on a woman’s right to choose and affecting restrictions on stem cell research, tobacco, gun violence, and other matters continue to be added to bipartisan legislation at the eleventh hour. I also believe that this should be seen as a jumpstart since it only restores NIH funding to its Fiscal Year 2010 level.”

“Nonetheless, I support this agreement because it paves the way for scientists and researchers to make new discoveries for American families hoping for cures and treatments. Additionally, it is a boon for Maryland’s nation-leading research community as it reduces unnecessary burdens for both the NIH and the Food and Drug Administration. This legislation will create another generation of treatments to be discovered right here in our state. Further, the legislation is fully offset and the Congressional Budget Office estimates the measure will save over $500 million in the next decade.”
