86. Tamanos Mountain, 6790' (S)
Tamanos is a classic scramble. It has moderate elevation and distance, and it grants you the satisfaction of passing through forests to meadows and climbing a mountain with great views. The peak’s name is apparently derived from the Chinook word for “spirit.”

Driving
Drive SR 410 4.5 miles south of the Crystal Mountain ski area turnoff and turn right on Sunrise Park Road. Drive 3.4 miles to the Owyhigh Lakes trailhead. Park on the right side of the road.
Route
Leave from the Owyhigh Lakes trailhead (elevation 3740') and reach the lakes in approximately 3.5 miles. About 200 yards past the lakes, the terrain flattens and the trail breaks out into the open (5380'). Leave the trail here and head northwest at a bearing of approximately 295 degrees. Ascend 850' and attain the ridge at 6260'. Head north and then slightly northwest until the Tamanos summit. Stay on the left (west) side when encountering rocky outcroppings.
Comments
You can exit via the Deer Creek Trail, but it would make for several more miles of trail and you would have to leave cars at each trailhead.
