60. Observation Rock, 8364' (S)

Observation Rock is often combined with Echo Rock, though this makes for a very full day. Observation is one of our favorite scrambles. From a distance, the peak looks impossible to climb, but in fact there is an easy scramble route on the backside. The peak’s name is descriptive, owing to the spectacular vistas from the mountain.

Driving

Drive to the end of the Mowich Lake Road. Park at the south end of the parking area.

Route

From the Spray Park trailhead, follow the Wonderland Trail 4.4 miles and at approximately 6380' (just before the trail begins to descend), turn southeast (there is a footpath for a mile or so). Follow the best terrain, generally traveling southeast over open country. Head toward the saddle between Echo and Observation. From the saddle, head south and southwest. Climb Observation clockwise, heading around the south and west.

Comments

Icy slopes near the top mandate an ice ax and crampons even in mid to late summer. A helmet is also useful, especially if you climb Echo.
