59.  Norse Peak, 6856' (H)

Norse Peak is an easy, pleasant hike and there are great views of Rainier on the upper half of the hike. Though we list this as a summer hike, Norse can be climbed in the winter—the route is different and leaves from the ski area. First called Swede Butte, the name was changed to Norse Peak by Forest Service officials, as the original name was “considered undignified.” The origin of the Swede Butte name is unknown.

Driving

Drive SR 410 to 14 miles south of Greenwater, and turn left on Crystal Mountain Boulevard. In 4.1 miles, just past a Crystal Mountain sign, park at a pull-off on the right side of the road (approximately 3950') or alternatively park on the left side (just uphill a short ways) at the bottom of a dirt road.

Route

Opposite the road, on the left and uphill a very short ways, is a gravel road. (Of course if you park on the left side you will be right by the dirt road.) Though this road is drivable there is insufficient room for parking by the trailhead. Hike this road for approximately 0.25 mile and locate the trailhead for Norse Peak Trail 1191 on the left. In 2013 the trailhead sign had no lettering – it was a blank board. At 5200', views open up to the valley and ski area. Views of Rainier appear at 5500'. Reach a junction at 5900' to Goat Lake. Continue straight. Come to the ridge leading to Norse at 6600'. Follow the ridge, staying mostly on the right, to the summit at 6856'.

Comments

There are wonderful flowers mid-July through mid-August.
