01. Andrew, 6716' (S)

Andrew is an easy scramble that can be approached via the South Puyallup River Trail or the St. Andrews Creek Trail. Biking these approaches makes Andrew a doable day trip. If you approach via the South Puyallup River Trail, we strongly recommend scrambling Tokaloo Rock. If you approach via St. Andrews Creek Trail, we suggest popping up Aurora. It would be possible to do Aurora, Andrew, and Tokaloo Rock as a three-fer, but it would be a killer day. Andrew is located in St. Andrews Park, which was named by a group from St. Mark’s Episcopal Church of Seattle, who in the 1890s were the first to camp in the region.

Driving

From the Nisqually Entrance, drive 1 mile and turn left on the Westside Road. Drive 3.2 miles until you reach the large parking lot at the washout.

Routes

South Puyallup River Trail via Round Pass: Travel by bike on the decommissioned Westside Road for approximately 4 miles to Round Pass. Stow your bike and start on the Round Pass Trail (the trailhead sign is on the east side of the road). In 0.6 mile the Round Pass Trail meets the South Puyallup River Trail. Hike east on the South Puyallup River Trail for 1.6 miles until it intersects the Wonderland Trail at 4200'. Turn left (north) on the Wonderland Trail and immediately cross the South Puyallup River. Stay on the Wonderland Trail until about 6000'. Leave the trail, heading east and then northeast. Pass below Andrew and head up an easy gully immediately east of the peak (see map). Bear northwesterly toward the col and then counterclockwise until you reach the flat summit.

St. Andrews Creek Trail: Travel by bike on the decommissioned Westside Road for approximately 8 miles to the St. Andrews Creek Trail. Stow your bike and head east on the trail approximately 2.7 miles to the Wonderland Trail. At the junction with the Wonderland Trail, turn right and head east. Continue toward St. Andrews Lake. Before reaching the lake, take a way trail heading easterly and then south, reaching a basin northwest of Andrew. From the basin follow a ridge leading to a col west of Andrew. Travel easterly on the south side of the peak. Pass below Andrew and head up an easy gully immediately east of the peak (see description above, under South Puyallup River Trail via Round Pass).

Comments

If you approach via the South Puyallup River Trail, adding Tokaloo Rock makes for a spectacular day. Andrew is not named on the Green Trails map and is labeled as 6716'. Andrew is named on the USGS map. Just before reaching the South Puyallup River crossing, you will find spectacular andesite columns on the right.
