61. Old Baldy Mountain, 5795' (S)
Old Baldy is just north of the park border. Though technically outside the park, it is part of a Mountaineers Peak Pin. The peak is descriptively named for its treeless, or “bald,” summit.

Driving
Head toward the Carbon River Entrance and just before the park entrance, turn left on FS 7810 and cross the Carbon River. The bridge is not signed, nor is there a sign for FS 7810, but the bridge is the only one crossing the Carbon River in this area. In 0.25 mile past the bridge, go right at a fork in the road—the road initially parallels the river. At 3.5 miles from the bridge, reach a junction with an old jeep spur road about 250 yards past Kennedy Creek (approximately 3240'). Park here. The road, though bumpy and slow going, does not require a high-clearance vehicle.
Route
Start on the old jeep track going west, and follow the road/trail to 3900'. At 3900' you should be at a hairpin turn. Leave the trail at this point and head west, uphill. As you do, it will become more apparent that you are on a ridge. At the south end of the ridge at 4800’, avoid the thick vine maple patch that defines the southeast slope below the peak. Note this on the way down and start down to the north of this through timber. There is a small peaklet (elevation 4920'); stay to the left (south) of this peaklet. After passing the peaklet, head northwest, passing though a basin at 5000'. Continue heading northwest until you reach the saddle, which is northeast of Old Baldy. From the saddle, head southwest on the ridge to the summit.
Comments
Consider bringing helmets for possible rockfall near the top. We urge caution on the return route as it is easy to get off route, especially if visibility is poor.
