19. Burroughs, Third, 7828' (H-S)

First Burroughs is a very easy hike to a peak that is as flat as a football field. Second Burroughs is also a hike but a little more strenuous. Third Burroughs is an easy hike-scramble and mostly on a good footpath. In early July, the somewhat steep slope from Frozen Lake to Burroughs is usually covered with snow and can be a little sketchy if you are not comfortable on snow. The route description here includes information for all three Burroughs. The peak is named for the naturalist John Burroughs. Originally it was called John Burroughs Mountain.

Driving

Drive SR 410 4.5 miles south of the Crystal Mountain ski area turnoff and turn right on Sunrise Park Road. Drive 15 miles to the road’s end at the Sunrise Visitor Center parking area.

Route

The trailhead is located to the right of the restrooms. Begin uphill on the asphalt trail leading to Sourdough Ridge. Follow trail signs to First Burroughs and then the path to Second Burroughs. From Second Burroughs to Third Burroughs, continue on the trail, heading west (you will descend 400' to a plateau). At about 7000' leave the trail and head west toward the summit of Third Burroughs. Follow the best route—there is a good footpath when snow is absent. The route reaches the ridge line just south of the summit; turn right for an easy and short walk up to summit. The summit is marked with a rock cairn.

Comments

You can follow the alternate route on the return trip, adding 0.5 mile (see Topo Map 2.19). Third Burroughs has spectacular views of the Winthrop Glacier and is well worth the extra effort. Flowers during late July and August are fantastic. Those with scramble skills can make a partial off-trail loop by climbing Skyscraper Mountain on the return to the trailhead at Sunrise.
