AS UP Orions Curse

UT ASSAULT - Large, 11 objectives, 8 - 16 players. Future Tech Industrial Space Port Facility. Started November 2003. Not completed (see chart)

This was the map I built for Evil_blue_dude's Unreal Playground Assault mapping contest held at UP from November through December 2003. The map became pretty huge in the last month of development and at some point stopped building properly (there was always something wrong). The whole process became extremely frustrating (fixing a bug would result in more bugs) and I eventually got fed up enough to abandon development. It seems I'd hit the limits of Unreal Engine 1 BSP. I had done a mountain of work on this map so I was pretty disappointed, but maybe a bit wiser for the experience (or not, lol :)

Having done so much work I figured I could still use what I had by splitting the bugger into three or four smaller maps. As it turned out, that idea was only slightly less crazy than trying to build the largest UT map ever made, simply because the individual maps would each expand with details to the point they would become over bloated problematic maps. At least in the case of the Orion's Curse Part-1 and Part-2 assault maps.

During development of the Part-1 map for the CTC2 map pack, BETA testing at UTAssault.net revealed that first OC map was still too big and complex, and as such would never work properly online.

So the Part-1 map was cut pretty much cut in half and slightly rearranged in the final area. The sections that were removed were eventually moved to the Part-2 map. A second UTA BETA confirmed some improvement with the smaller Part-1, but the map was still considered too complex for online.

At that point I put all my plans for Orion's Curse Assault maps on hold and shelved the projects. Later on, both Orion's Curse Part-1 and Part-2 would be completed and released respectively as an Assault map (Part-1) and a CTF map (Part-2), but that's another story.

The path network, assault actors, and objective setups were in place for about two thirds of the map, by the time the contest ended. Although, the theme work was no where near finished. The basic thing was there though, warts and all :P
