UT CTF - Large, 10-20 players. Facing Medieval Fortress villages. June-July 2002.
"My Little Town" (working title) was something I banged out around the middle of 2002. This was planned as a large CTF layout, for 10-20 players. I was getting sick and tired of working on these big ugly sci-fi bases or spaceships, so wanted to do something using torches, woods and Nali Castle type textures. So this was to be facing medieval villages, with some sort of mountain cliffs between them so players could do some wide range sniping from up above the little towns.
Some stone titans and various Unreal monsters would be wandering around the in streets to make flag runs a little more interesting. There were lots of routes. The terrain pieces were largely unconventional in construction (i.e. lazy man intersected random brush shapes - rather than using proper terrain tools where you spend all day pulling vertices and crashing the editor). Rather unique looking rock as it turned out.
Anyways, there was quite a lot of stuff jammed into these each village space: big boulders, some huts, animal pens, several houses, a church of sorts with a graveyard, creepy tunnels underneath the town, and mainly a fortress with a large lookout tower. Some of the map and lighting looked pretty, and had a very unreal feel about it - although that was not intended! As I recall, the bots had a hard time - probably had a lot of collision errors due to the wonky terrain brushes, polys were often off the scale so oh boy did this one LAG OUT badly for the poor snipers. Basically came to my senses and stopped trying after kicking this thing for a month and just moved on to other more promising projects.
Interestingly, I did steal a bunch of prefabs and items I made for this map, and used them in later projects - for example, in the map DOM-300K-Newfies I ganked the houses and a few other bits, lol! Anyways, thought i'd share this oddball recollection :) Cheers
