CTF XMC Snow Faced

DESCRIPTION

CTF XMC Snow Faced

UT CTF - Large, 8-16 Players. Giant Facing Snowmen! Released December 2010.

A CHRISTMAS STORY:

Way up at the North Pole Santa's elves were Restless. Having just finished all the preparations for Christmas (building toys and making Candy and such) they needed to blow off some steam!

Everyone knows Santa's elves still like to play Unreal Tournament '99 so they built two giant facing snowmen on a snowy mountain-top and carved out the interiors to look like the famous Inoxx Face temples!

Elves also like Christmans movies, christmas trees and lots of colorfull presents so they decorated the snowman bases with lots of pictures of their favorite flicks and characters!

Once the elves were finshed they split themselves into red and blue teams for big Face battle on Christmas Eve!

Hope you enjoy the Ho-Ho-Ho-HEADSHOTS!

This was map#1 built for the 2_Face Christmas 2010 mapping contest held at Unreal Playground during November-December 2010. SnowFaced is available in two versions: a Normal weapon version, and also UTR xPickups version. This is more-or-less laid it out like the original face product map, except this one is a bit bigger and obviously a totally different locale and design approach.

Altogether SnowFaced took me about 20 hours from mid-November to mid-December for all the screwing around with terrains and actors, finding and then making custom textures, playing lots of old xmas maps :) and then finishing lighting and decorating etc.

CREDITS:

  • Many thanks to Tom_caT for good suggestions and BETA testing.

  • ParticleSystem_43.u is by Bot_40 originally from the map DM-Deck40.

  • EATGAirstrike.u actor is from the map CTF-EnemyAtTheGates.unr by Bill 'DireIce' Hamilton (released 5/16/01) Actor was created by ElBundee

  • An assortment of textures from various UTX were used as bases in making custom textures for SnowFaced - some (bricks and floors) are from modified WOT and ShockSystems textures, snow and ice etc are from SnowTex.utx and DespSnow_c, and merged with gradiants etc.

  • Snowy Rock cliffs are from the map CTF-ArcticOutpost by Slick Willy, and are used here unchanged. I did make my own snow-cliff type textures but they didn't seem to work as well as the SW ones.

  • Tree_Pack1.u is from ???.

  • Skybox cube-map image bases are from ElyVision - I merged set #09 and set #15, and made the cube bottom using tricks, heh...

  • I also ganked and formatted several xmas movie images from the web, and similarly created most of the masked stuff too. I made the contest banners too :)

  • Note that the masked pine03 and pinesnow textures are from an old Unreal1 xmas map called dmNoel (Merry Christmas), by Francois Lacombe aka Orion(Co30). Nice XmAs tree in that one!

  • I included a soundbyte which I found in the Unreal1 map DMdeCyberXmas (Dec 14 1998 by Mark 'Oz'Austin & EZkeel) which fit nicely - I believe it's the instrumental passage from the 1975 Greg Lake (ex ELP) song "I believe in Father Christmas". There was no credit given back then as now...

  • Music is Found112.umx, which is a remix of the Foundry action music sequence - by Tom_caT and FragnBraG from the game Unreal RTNP. This track has been kicking around for a while so I figured I'd use it here. Some person I know is not too crazy about this track, but I think it's Alexander Brandon at his melodic best and I like it so I'm putting it in ;)

  • Many thanks to 2_Face for having the very fun XMAS contest!

  • Music is Found112.umx, an Unreal RTNP music remix by Tom_caT & FraGnBraG.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This version of SnowFaced does NOT work online. The Particle System will cause the match to freeze. If you wish to play the map online you should download the SERVER EDITION.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This map DOES work on Servers !!!

At the time of the contest SnowFaced was not tested for on-line play, so I asked (in the readme.txt) if someone runs it on a server and something doesn't work to please inform me and I would then fix the bugs.

Sure enough, I got the bad news, LOL! The particle System caused the match to freeze after about 20-30 seconds. Many thanks to Myth for the feedback. I ended up having to remove the ParticleSystem42. This just means that there is no snow falling during the match. Oh well...
