CTF FNB SimpleX

DESCRIPTION

CTF FNB SimpleX

UT CTF - Medium, 8-12 players. Future Mars processing station. April-May 2006.

This was really more of an experiment than a serious effort. I thought I'd give a try at making a CTF using the SimpleX DM/DOM layout "flipped". The two bases would be joined on the "east side" and they did actually mate together using a few short ramps.

Flag base positions were tried in a few different locations along the "west side" of the DOM layout during the exercise, and while the matches basically worked there were some immediate problems that arose.

The first issue was the obvious "BOTs only using the shortest routes" which left a good portion of the map unusable. Even if I forced them out to the least used spaces, in reality (with humans) this would NEVER happen since there were plenty of fighting options along the direct routes. So I'd have to block off much of the side areas.

The second major issue was framerate and performance! While (at the time) the FR dropped badly in a few spots - mainly because both bases were in fact in the same zone, and that zone was huge! Too huge IMO, which would mean a re-design effort to create at least two fully occluded zones. This would be essentially sticking in tall walls (or other structures) with deep doorways or openings of some sort, that each team would have to transit through at various elevations.

These points would be highly defensible meaning once an FC got into his own base he was home-free. Not to mention a whole new huge battle with HOMs would likely happen due to the complexity of each base... I think I'd had enough of SimpleX by this time and so abandoned the CTF SimpleX idea. The experiment ended pretty much as quickly as it began, oh well :D

Notice the extremely lop-sided score in image #6 below, as well as the poor BOT-performance for the non-human team.
