Assault maps

UT ASSAULT

Although Assault is one of the least-popular game-types in Unreal Tournament, I think it is the coolest part of the product. It's like a combination of single player linearity and a tactical team game with the attack/defend turns within a match.

Unfortunately, there are not very many custom AS maps available - most likely because they take a lot more planning, require higher overall skill to build, and require a lot more testing and A.I. tweaking during development.

It's just a lot easier to make a Deathmatch, DOM, CTF or even a Monster Hunt map (well, that said, MH maps can get quite complex as it turns out, but still imo not as difficult produce as Assault maps). My hat goes off to anyone who's ever built a successful Assault map, whether it's for online or offline play - I've only released two in all these years. I do have two more AS sitting incomplete which I'd hoped to complete, but it's more likely these will be finished as MH maps, if they are completed at all.

UT ASSAULT

Large 4 Objective layout supports 8-16 players - Normal weapons.

Future Tech Industrial Space port Facility. Released in the FoT-4 vol.1 map pack, the map was originally developed for a 2003 UP mapping contest but not submitted. Eventually split the map into two parts: Part1 was completed as AS for the FoT4 pack, and Part2 eventually finished as a CTF for the FoT5 map pack as a rather large CTF map.

Earth Outpost ORION STATION, 2473 AD (PART-1) MISSION: The station has been invaded and is held by a hostile force. You and some fellow dock-workers evaded capture during the invasion, and now your group must act as an advanced recon squad. Your mission is to breach the base and transmit an encrypted distress call to the Earth Fleet! To do this you must disable the station's security systems. This will be tough because the invaders now control the key areas. Once the distress call is transmitted, the Earth Fleet will come to the rescue of the besieged outpost!

  • [Objective-1] Breach the base by opening the base security doors. Do this by destroying two security door-control panels. These panels are found in the loading dock security center located to the left side of the main entrance...

  • [Objective-2] Next, head up to the control room and smash four Security System Control panels. There are eight panels, the four you want are on the upper level... Once completed, you will gain access to the stations Comm center building.

  • [Objective-3] Advance towards the Comm Center. Once inside, blast the two Comm Dish alignment control panels at the end of the room. This causes a backup system to automatically point a disk at Earth!! Also disables the defence turrets in the area and opens the door to the Emergency Transmission Station...

  • [Final] Enter the transmission station room and activate this switch to transmit the Automated Distress Message and alert the Earth Fleet - MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

This map was originally designed for the Unreal Playground Assault mapping contest held in Nov-Dec 2003. The contest was won by Lord Simeon who completed AS-UP-Manor, a very fun assault map. My contest map was AS-UP-OrionsCurse, a large linear assault map with several sections, but unfortunately increasing amounts of bugs and a lack of time conspired to kill the map so I had no choice but to bail on the contest. Afterwords, I split the bugger into 3 smaller maps (part-1, part-2, part-3) and proceeded to work on part-1. After I spent a month or two of reworking the maps I became tired of assault mapping and opted to put it down for a while so I could work on other projects.

Some months later I started up OC again to include in the CTC2 map pack. After a somewhat concentrated effort, AS-CTC-OrionsCursePart1 went to BETA at UTAssault.net, and the good amount of feeback changed the map. BETA-2 was completed at UTA but by that time the map was going to miss CTC-2 so I released DM-CTC-DeadlyWorship in the mappack instead. During mid-2005, I removed a section from the Part-3 map and used it as the basis of what became CTF-FNB-OrionsRevenge.

In late 2006, I resurrected the Part-1 and Part-2 maps for Forts-Of-Time (Fot4), but only managed to complete the Part-1 map for the mappack. Hopefully, AS-FoT-OrionsCursePart2 can be completed for a future FoT release. It is impossible to calculate exactly how long it took to deliver this map, not that it really matters. When first released, the map might have been a hard on old machines in some spots, but on current hardware, there are NO performance issues at all (off-line).

Map #9 for Blito3's Annual 300k Contest, Nov-Dec 2008. Retake a hijacked Russian Nuclear Sub. Russian Sub 'Red October' has been hijacked by insane terrorists!!! Your mission is to retake the sub and force it to surface!

  • OBJECTIVE-1: Enter the forward hatch and hit the red switch to shut down the cruise missile control system. Exit thru the open torpedo tube;

  • OBJECTIVE-2: Next, enter thru the tower hatch and hit the red switch to blow out the ballast tanks to force the sub to surface;

  • OBJECTIVE-3: Last, head up to the control room and hit the red switch to shut down the Engines. *** MISSION ACCOMPLISHED ***

There are only rocket launchers, sniper rifles and flak cannons, plus a small amount of ammo for each each. No Power Ups but there is Scuba Gear where needed. Just enough health around :) Design, build and tweaking took altogether too long for a 300K map - maybe 10 to 12 hours.

The map was around 700K before I checked the size. After that it was a painful process hacking it down to 300K. When I did get it near I fought with it until poof it went down to 280K! That was good enough for me!! I could have put some 19K more into it after all that but decided bugger it - no way - it's done!! This map concept might be good for a full-fledged assault map - a nuclear sub could have pretty huge deco and highly detailed areas - just a thought, won't be me making it lol!
