Background:
The warrior monk known as Ungn-yeo was born in Eosium as Younha, illegitimate daughter of a rice merchant and his serving girl.
Upon the death of the aging merchant, young Younha was driven from the house with only a single piece of silver in her pocket and the clothes on her back. With no family or friends to support her, Younha took to a life of petty thievery and begging on the streets of the city, stealing and begging what she could to survive.
Although a slight and small girl, Younha was fierce and intense fighter and could easily hold her own even against children twice her age and size. Over time she became a ringleader of a group of orphaned street rats that prowled the streets of the great walled city.
One day she decided to make a go at the offering bowl of an old monk; he looked harmless enough, and so rapt in meditation that he wouldn’t notice that his copper was gone.
This assessment proved incorrect, however, when the monk grabbed her wrist as soon as her hand touched the coins. Opening his closed eyes, he looked directly into hers, and after a moment’s pause he spoke:
“I see that you are living as a mouse, but there is a mighty tiger within you. Come to my home, and we can find the tiger together.”
He then released her wrist, and the frightened and shaken girl scooped up the coins and ran away.
But the old monk’s words somehow resonated with her, and she found herself following the monk around every day as he made his rounds through the ancient city. He never made any indication that he saw her skulking after him, but somehow she knew that he was well aware of her presence all the same.
Finally she found the courage to follow her all the way back to monastery where he lived. While she was standing openly in the street with fists clenched and eyes defiant, the monk calmly closed and locked the gate behind him, leaving her alone.
She didn’t know exactly why, but she needed to be inside those gates. So she sat and waited for him to come out until the sun went down, and then continued to stubbornly wait all night and until the next day. For three days and nights she waited, until finally she collapsed from hunger, exposure and lack of sleep.
She awoke two days later inside the monastery. She was told that she had been accepted as an acolyte into the order, and that she must leave her old life and ways of thinking behind.
Younha accepted, and over time begin training in the ways of the Fivefold Path. The old monk had proved to be correct - there was a tiger within her, and over time she learned to draw upon the strength and determination that had been in her all along to become a weapon and a living force to maintain harmony and balance within the world.
At the age of 19 Younha took the name ‘Ungn-yeo’ (after the goddess of Goryon legend) and left the cloister to explore the wider world. Her mission is to spread harmony throughout the lands, but she knows firsthand how wicked the floating world can be and thus the monumental nature of her task. With the guidance of the ancient sages, however, she hopes that she will be equal to the challenges she encounters in her journey.
Beads of the Boar Spirit
Ungun-yeo starts play with this Magic Item, which she wears as a girdle about her waist.
The item was created when the ancient sage Juzu defeated a wild boar that was terrorizing a small isolated village. Although it had died by his hands the boar was nevertheless pleased to grant its fierce power to its vanquisher, and the boar spirit that inhabits the beads now grants the same to any worthy wearer.
While being worn this item grants the Charge Attack quality (pg 231) and the user may cast Brawn I once per scene.
The Fivefold Path (Alignment)
Paths: Strength, Knowledge, Heroism, Protection, Travel
Alignment Skills: Acrobatics, Athletics, Crafting, Resolve, Tactics
Ritual Weapon: Unarmed, Staff
Avatar: Immortal Sages
Opposed Alignments: None. All extremes ultimately seek balance, so opposition must give way to harmony.
Followers of the Fivefold Path believe in the power of ‘Ki’ - literally the world itself, a power that manifests in all living things. They worship no gods, but instead revere the Immortal Sages, who guide the living on the proper path of harmony and balance with the world.
Branches of this unusual religion can be found as far west as Eosium, but the home of the faith is be to be found in the eastern land of Xinjou.
