The first session finds our young heroes Severin the Huntsman and Lammert the Disowned impoverished, homeless, and of limited renown in their home village of Montaigne.
Remy, the innkeeper of The Flatfooted Ogre always seems to know the goings on about town, so they come to him in search of paying work. He offers them 10s total (5 per) to assist as tavern bouncers on the next Septidi's eve, which they readily agree to.
He also notes legends of a fierce dire boar named 'Broken Tusk' who has been terrorizing the woodsmen near Faerie Pool. Although most learned people pass off the existence of this creature as fable of the besotted imaginings of tippling woodsmen, the local lord of Lupin Castle has personally offered a 50s reward for the creature's massive head.
Lured by the opportunity for fame, fortune, and a hearty slab of bacon our two warriors depart the next morning deep into the northwoods to seek the beast out. Along the way they meet a woodcutter called Lebeau, who tells the harrowing tale of his encounter with the animal - including the fact that it was mighty enough to fell the tree that he had taken refuge in!
More wary now after hearing this first-hand account, the hunters first find the felled tree as verification of Lebeau's tall tale. Unable to otherwise locate the creatures den, they head straight up towards Faerie Pool itself, the woods becoming darker and deeper as they travel into land of gigantic ancient trees, who greedily gobble up every ray of sunshine in the canopy above.
At last they reach the waters of the pool. At this point in the forest the unending canopy of great trees opens, allowing sunlight to dance up on it's still surface. Although only maybe 60ft across it's widest point, the crystal clear waters of the pool show it to be mysteriously deep, and even in the light of day the pool has a strangely magical aura.
As they reason that creature must eventually come here to drink, the two stalkers plan an ambush, Severin setting himself atop a great stone with bow and arrows at the ready, the Lammert hiding behind the same stone with sword in hand.
Unbeknownst to our heroes, however, the creature had been tracking them for some time and sat in the wood watching them set up with it's glowing red eyes. Finally emerging from the opposite side of the wood with the loud rustle of leaves and cracking of branches, the creature leisurely makes it's way to water to take a drink from the pool. As it drinks, it's blood red eyes meet those of Severin's as he is still perched up atop the great rock.
Wasting no time, Severin lets loose a first arrow into the beasts thick hide. Shrieking from more rage than pain, the great beast gives charge, making it's way around the pool and towards the great stone itself. As it charges towards him Severin let's loose a second and third arrow, the first one missing and the second becoming stuck in leathery folds of the creatures haunch.
Undeterred and unslowed by this onslaught, the creature charges the great stone itself, twice bashing it's great head like a battering ram into it's face. The stone shudders and shifts, but does not break, and Severin is just able to keep from sliding off of it's slick mossy surface.
Just then, Lammert emerges from hiding and with a yelp attacks the monster with his short sword. He marks the creature well, but does not wound it, and it quickly focuses it's rage on this new interloper.
Seeing his comrade in trouble, Severin leaps from the top of the stone, his scholars blade whistling as it drives deep into the beasts flesh, making a gashing wound. Again the great boar turns, it's massive tusks just barely missing Severin's body as he lithely dodges out of the way.
Back and forth the battle rages for a time, the two warriors slowly wearing the dire boar down whilst flanking him from fore and aft. But Lammert's luck finally gives out, and with a swift blow the creature knocks him off balance, the second slash of it's single tusk leaving a deep gash in Lammert's chest just inches way from his heart.
Again inspired to action by seeing his compatriot is danger, Severin calls the boars attention to himself, steadies his arm- and strikes the beast with a single mighty blow between the eyes! The creature staggers..staggers..and then falls with a great thud, shaking the ground and causing great ripples in the forest pool. With a single great sigh, it gives up it's life.
Battered and battle-worn, the two hunters pause to rest and bandage their wounds. It was a close fight- but in the end they are both alive and victorious.
