---------------------------
The city-state now known as Eosium started as the small port city of Phillion, founded on a bay of smallish island in the Middle Sea.
The city remained in relative obscurity until the Coryon prince Daigun abducted Princess Selene of Antiop, striking the spark that ignited the legendary Coryon War. Suddenly taking center stage, a thousand ships launched from it's harbors to place the great city-state of Coryon under a siege that would last for almost a decade.
The war that ended in the destruction of the ancient Coryon civilization, and survivors of Coryon were brought back to Phillion in chains. Although the war had robbed mighty Coryon of it's greatest warriors it had lost of none of it's smarts, and over time the brilliant and industrious Coryeo (or 'Goryo') rose to prominence in the city that had once made them slaves.
Centuries later the city was in turn conquered by General Vesuvian of Sallust. Not trusting the Koine people that otherwise populated the islands, Vesuvian wisely adopted the native Goryon as client ruling class. When Vesuvian was in turn defeated by his sometime friend and later rival Milius the Conqueror, Milius was pleased to keep this arrangement in place.
The city enjoyed it's place as the easternmost outpost of the Sallustrian Empire until Emperor Heosphorus the Philosoph, tiring of the politics of Sallust chose to move the capitol to Phillion, renaming it 'Eosium' - Star of the East. There he took a local noblewoman as his wife, and even began studying the eastern philosophy of The Fivefold Path, going so far as to make it's legendary sages into saints of the Universal Triumvirate faith.
Eventually the Empire split asunder, leaving the barbarian Emperor Thaedric ruler of Aenea as the 'Western Emperor', and Eohan II of Eosium as ruler of the east. The division exists to this day (although the Imperial Crown of the west has since been moved north to Treves), causing friction between houses and nations of the would-be rulers of the world.

Modern day Eossium is a place of riches - not only in coin, but in knowledge and wisdom. The secrets of both the western and eastern lands can be found here, along with those that might teach them- but always for a price. Here is the home to the powerful chromatic mages (Black, White, Red, Green and Blue), and some of the most skilled alchemists in all of the world. Here also is the home to the mighty Imperial Dragoons - warriors in the service to the Eastern Emperor that fight with spear and black powder weapons of the far east, basing their fighting style on the mythic dragons from whence they take their name.
It was the alchemists of Eosium that mastered the use of Dragonfyre - a sticky and highly flammable amber substance that the Eoseites use to light their streets and homes at night, to move their incredible flying ships, and even to use as fearsome weapon against their foes. It was also the alchemists who mastered the use of black power- a less volatile but still dangerous substance that powers the slug-hurling pistols and blunderbusses used by the Dragoons and others to defend the realm, ships and homes of Eosium from pirates and barbarians.
If the Western Emperor rules by favor and sword, then the Eastern Emperor rules by coin and gun. Although nominally ruler of the entirety of the Middle Sea only the city-state itself is under his direct control, the rest of the Isles of Koine serving at best as tributaries, allies of convenience, or existing in a state of nearly open rebellion at worst. For now, however, the Emperor seems content as long as the flow of trade gold does not cease. Failing that, his airships and dragoons stand at the ready to repay any disrespect or insult in kind.
One notable aspect of this realm is the use of giant flightless birds called Qwaraks as mounts and pack animals, replacing the horses and mules used for the same function in other lands. Tamed versions of their predatory ancestors, these creatures can found throughout Eosium and wherever it's influence spreads as the preferred pack beast and mounts of it's knights, dragoons, traders and travelers of all kind. Though made gentle by years of selective breeding these creatures can prove temperamental unless placated by certain green vegetables that nourish their bodies and calm their nerves.

Imperial Dragoons - warriors in the service to the Eastern Emperor that fight with spear and black powder weapons of the far east, basing their fighting style on the mythic dragons from whence they take their name. They ride upon huge flightless birds known as qwaraks- although skittish and violent in the wild they take to saddle training surprisingly well. They’re not as effective for hauling loads as horses or other pack animals but their natural predatory instincts make them quite effective in melee.
