I maintain referral lists for many different types of services and issues. On request, I can likely provide you some useful recommendations. For the purposes of this website, I will focus on three things:
(1) General recommendations for finding an appropriate behavioral health professional.
(2) Providing a link to an article that provides some good advice about finding a therapist.
(3) Providing you with a link to a searchable database of therapists.
(1) General recommendations for finding an appropriate behavioral health professional
I recommend that you obtain services only from professionals who are appropriately licensed and qualified. Professionals are licensed by the State of Oregon. You can verify that a professional has an active license on the website of the relevant professional State board.
Professionals who provide psychotherapy include: Psychologists (PhD or PsyD; state board), licensed clinical social workers (LCSW; state board), licensed professional counselors (LPC; state board), and licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFT; state board). Psychiatrists (MD or DO; state board) rarely do psychotherapy, but they are experts in biological treatments for psychiatric disorders, including medication. Any physician (MD or DO, state board) or advance nurse practitioner (NP, state board) can also prescribe psychiatric medication.
I recommend that you contact 2 or 3 professionals. Typically, you will need to leave a message. Tell them that you are seeking treatment and provide them with good times to call you back. When you speak with them on the phone, expect to spend about 5 minutes or so. Let them know your situation and ask if their services would be a good fit for you. Recommended additional questions include: their licensure status; their training and experience; their model for providing treatment; whether they accept your insurance; and what forms of payment they accept.
