Values-guided committed action is a key part of therapy guided by the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Therapy is not only about learning how to more effectively handle difficult emotions or situations, it is about connecting with what is really important to you and using that knowledge to guide, inspire, and motivate yourself when making changes in your life.
Values are our heart's deepest desires for the way we want to interact with and relate to the world, other people, and ourselves. They are leading principles that can guide us and motivate us as we move through life. Committed action means taking effective action, guided by our values.
There are two major tasks in values-guided committed action: (1) Values identification, and (2) committed action. Follow the links to more guidance regarding these tasks. Each page has an exercise that I often encourage my patients to complete early in therapy between sessions.
