(1) About activity monitoring
Activity monitoring means keeping a real-time record of your activities. As a "personal effectiveness" technique, there are at least two reasons to monitor your activity:
(A) You obtain objective data about how you are using your time, and this can help you gain insight into the habits and rationalizations that may be decreasing your effectiveness.
(B) The very act of monitoring can increase your personal effectiveness by increasing your awareness.
The basic method is to create (or download) a spreadsheet that lists the hours of the day vertically, and has a place to the right for you to note the activity you engaged in (see below). Additional information that could be recorded include: notes about your mood and notes about what might be throwing you off track.
