How to Dethatch and Aerate Your Lawn

Preparing for Winter

Cutting your grass short in Fall helps to prevent diseases, attract less debris, and lower the potential of having snow mold in the North. And also is less attractive to voles. Work your way down in the Fall, down 2 settings from the summer height (which some people could consider long, but longer summer grass helps maintain damp soil and blocks out weeds)

Aeration & Dethatching

Aerate second Fall from first planting, then dethatch the following Fall.

Then maybe take a year off, and then repeat that 3 year pattern.
