On Our 5th Anniversary.
On this, the fifth anniversary of the publication of our newsletter Xit-Koddi, I would like to thank all those who have stood by us in our effort to keep alive the spirit of “Goykarponn” among the Goans in Bahrain. It has been an uphill struggle to bring out Xit-Koddi , but we have a sense of satisfaction in doing so for the last five years, as the Konkani saying goes 'Mog aslear un vodde ghanttar pavtat'.
We hope to be able to continue with our work in future also, and in fact seek to introduce new features, some of which we hope, will motivate our Goan youth to strive to new heights of excellence, not only within the community, but in a wider arena.
After all, Goans, though a minuscule segment of the Indian population have contributed enormously to the national stage in diverse fields. We already have many role models for our youth and we hope to highlight some of them in coming issues. For example, few of them know of Francis Souza, the Goan artist whose paintings have fetched some US $ 2 million apiece in auctions in western countries!
And there are many others, in practically every sphere of human endeavor, that have done exceptionally well, be it in
sports, politics, religion, academics and so on. We feel that
such Goan success stories should be showcased so that the younger generation of Goans can be inspired to emulate their example in some way or the other.
We look forward to hearing from our readers their views on
this new initiative of ours – to mark our fifth anniversary.
Mog Asum !!!

Property Disputes In Goa
A man stabs his mother and sister over a family property dispute. Another bludgeons his brother and sister-in-law with a spade. Yet another kills his younger brother while arguing over property. In another case this month, an obituary announcement asked family members who had opposed inventory proceedings of the deceased, not to attend the funeral. Such incidents show a growing divide among families in Goa. Pope Francis
And
His Inspirational Quotes
Souza spent some time in Bombay at the JJ School of Art and then went to England. It was a difficult time for him, and hoping to do better, he went to New York. He did better there, but the true worth of his art came to be recognized only after his death in 2002. At a recent auction in London, one of his paintings was sold for over US$ 2 million!
Souza is a modernist painter, influenced in some degree by his Goan background but also the abstract trends of his day. His life and career indicate the potential for artistic excellence that is inherent in many Goans. However, he deserves more recognition from his fellow-Goans. Hopefully, he will inspire others to follow in his footsteps. After all, his achievement is unrivalled and unlikely to be emulated in the near future.
We also bring a link to an article that appeared in Mumbai Mirror on FN Souza, that will give our readers a little more about the success story of this Goan.

Hundreds of Goans and individuals from different walks of life, showed their support to World Goa Day (WGD), by joining in the festivities organized by the Young Goans Club at the Baan Saeng Thai Restaurant Auditorium in Adliya on September 11.
The celebrations began at 11 a.m. with a variety of food and games stalls, and the revelry continued past midnight, with the youth enjoying the dance sessions by DJ Lucio and DJ Bosco. The colourful event, reflecting the culture and traditions of Goa, was in line with several similar celebrations across the globe, organised by Goan associations to commemorate the inclusion of Konkani in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The event with the theme 'Goa - a land united by beautiful villages' had several quiz competitions for the guests based on Goa and Goans. The celebrations emphasised the need to sustain the legacy of Konkani - Goa's native language, its heritage and culture.
Among the cultural and stage programs, 'The Goan Mando' was well presented and applauded by the large gathering. A number of Saudi Goans crossed the causeway to be part of these festivities and also presented cultural items, drawing the appreciation of the enthusiastic crowd. The Saudi Goans act, based on the originals of Lorna's song Atam Ami Kitem Koria, was greeted with thunderous applause. The group also presented a kharvi dance.
Earlier a group of little children mesmerized the audience with an opening song, and then a quartet presented a Corridinho dance depicting the influence of Portuguese colonial rule on Goans. Maka Khursar Marinakat, a Konkani play by Comedian Jr. Luis Anthony, also formed part of these celebrations. A dance. based on the song Maria Pitaxe and several popular Konkani songs of the past, were also presented by Bahrain and Saudi Goans.
Attaché at the Indian Embassy, Bahrain, Anil Batra, was the chief guest and joined the Organizing Committee, led by YGC President Noel Fernandes, in cutting the WGD cake. Servio Dias, a long-time Goan resident of Bahrain, was honoured by the club for his
social service work among the Goan community. Manuel Fernandes, coordinator of the Goa Day, spoke on the occasion, highlighting the importance of this celebration. The rogramme culminated with all participants joining in to form a Carnival parade. The YGC also combined the merriment of the 'Bandra Fair' to this event.
YGC comes in line with Global Goan Alliance partners in Abu-Dhabi, Sydney, Melbourne, Goa, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Karachi, Swindon, Dar-es-Salaam, Nairobi, Zanzibar and Canada to mark WGD this year.
