Travel Ban Relief On The Way
Several cases of travel bans imposed on expatriates in Bahrain, have been in the news of late. Travel bans are designed to prevent those who owe money, fleeing the country without settling outstanding debts.
Telecom companies and banks are behind most of the cases. It is reported that there are some cases of expats having been slapped with travel bans for outstanding amounts of as low as BD 20. There are stray cases related to immigration and work visas too. The unfortunate part of travel bans is that these persons come to know of them only at the airport immigration, after having been checked in by the airlines. This is not only emotionally embarrassing but also leads to monetary loss in many cases.
There have been requests to the authorities that at least advance information must be provided to the affected persons. It has now been announced that the Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs of the Ministry of Interior is working with the Ministry of Justice to devise a mechanism to inform people well in advance if they are facing a travel ban.
We welcome this announcement by the authorities as it will avoid unpleasant situations at the airport for such persons.

Universal Visa Sticker Dispensed: The Govt. of India has dispensed with the requirement of Universal (U) Visa Sticker on the foreign passport of those persons of Indian origin who are registered as OCI cardholders. This was disclosed in a press note issued by U. D. Kamat, the Director of NRI Affairs, Goa. The OCI Registration Certificate will be modified in the booklet form to provide for the endorsement “Visa Validity – Lifelong”. Insofar as foreign nationals of India origin who are already holding OCI cards are concerned, the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued instructions to all Indian Missions/Posts abroad and the FRROs in India not to insist on the production of the foreign passport containing the “U” Visa sticker while they enter/exit India and has advised these authorities to grant Immigration Clearance based on production of the OCI card only.

OBITUARIES
John Rebello (Goa): I read with interest your January issue of Xit-Koddi. Although I am impressed with your article - this month special - my trip to Goa, I was a little disappointed that although you came to pay your respects to the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier, you missed the opportunity to meet the Exposition Committee. We could have shared some interesting information especially, that we had the honor of receiving our former Bishop of Bahrain, Paul Hinder who visited Goa. Our former parish Rev. Fr. Dinesh Mendonca and I, escorted him for a short tour of Old Goa and then paying his respects to the relics and later con-celebrating the English Mass at the pandal. (Editor's note: I visited Old Goa for the exposition on the same day as the visit of our former bishop of Bahrain. However, unexpectedly I had to remain in the queue for four and half hours and missed the Mass concelebrated by him. Thank you for the pictures. We are publishing one here, showing our former bishop, former parish priest and our former team member of Xit-Koddi, John Rebello.)

Goa Carnival reflects the rich tradition and culture of the State of Goa. People from different caste and creed celebrate as well as participate in this carnival. Carnival is one of the eagerly awaited Goan festivals. Goa attracts many people from different parts of India as well as across the globe. Christley was in Qatar in November 2014 with the Bahrain Chess Academy team and participated in the Qatar Gas Under-16 chess tournament. Players from several countries took part in this open tournament and Christley came in 4th place among 150 players. He is seen in the above picture receiving a cash prize. Christley continued his winning streak in chess by securing first place in the juniors category of the Indian Club Centenary Chess tournament played in December 2014. The Indian club presented him with a gold medal and a cash prize. Christley was once again in the news winning second prize in the drawing and colouring contest organised by the Catechists of Sacred Heart Church at the annual family day celebrated on February 6.

The Young Goans Club (YGC) added a new event to its social calendar by organizing a Valentine Dinner Dance on February 12. The event at the Baan Saeng Thai restaurant auditorium in Adliya, attended by an elite crowd of around 120, was a resounding success with its unique celebration of love. The ballroom was lit up with Valentine fervor and a romantic ambience.
The 'Reunion Band' played scintillating music based on the Valentine theme and played non-stop from 8 p.m. till the end of the show. The couples enjoyed swaying and dancing to the lilting melodies cheering the band after every session.
The highlight of the evening was the selection of the 'Valentine Couple'. Aloma and Simson Fernandez bagged the prize for this competition for depicting the true spirit of Valentine with their enthusiastic participation in the event. Francis Correia, the YGC president, is seen here presenting the prize to the winners.
A Valentine-tagged dinner buffet added spice to the event co-sponsored by African & Eastern, Gulf Daily News, Lantern Restaurant and Lulu Hypermarket. Vice-President of YGC Godwin D'Cruz compered the show.
