Reminiscences of Bahrain
Sports Zone
Everyone loves ‘holidays’. The schools in Bahrain and in other parts of the Gulf have closed for the summer holidays. Parents generally choose to combine their vacation from work with the school holidays of their children. Many will head home to ‘Amchem Goem’ for a relaxing holiday. Our brains are taxed with studies and hard work. We need some rest to our mind and bodies. Holidays restore our energies and make us fit for work and studies again.
We wish all our readers planning a holiday away from Bahrain, a pleasant and happy vacation, and look forward to your return, refreshed and reinvigorated. And to those staying back in Bahrain and other GCC countries, whatever the summer may have in store for us, let’s look at it positively.
Truly yours

National Pension Savings Accounts For NRI’s: The Finance Ministry has announced that Non-resident Indians (NRIs) can now open National Pension Savings (NPS) accounts online if they have Aadhaar Card or PAN card. Till now, NRIs could open NPS accounts only through paper applications by approaching Bank offices. Further, the statement said NRIs will be able to open NPS accounts both on repatriable and on non-repatriable basis. The Finance Ministry expressed hope that both repatriable and non-repatriable schemes will greatly appeal to NRIs who intend to return to India after their employment abroad, in view of their attractive returns, low cost, flexibility and their being under a regulator established by the central government.
Registration of Indians: The Embassy of India in Bahrain has issued a circular reminding all Indian nationals living in Bahrain to register themselves with the Indian Embassy. This will help the Mission to have a ready database of all Indians living in Bahrain and will facilitate easy implementation of measures to be taken in situation of emergency or otherwise, the circular stated. The registration can be done online at: http://eoi.gov.in/bahrain/?2778?000

Franco Noronha - Damon, West Raia.
For this edition we have picked up a known figure who was quite active during his tenure in Bahrain and working in the
same field as myself and our editor. He is none other than FRANCO NORONHA from Damon West, Raia and is now pursuing his career with the renowned travel agency in Goa, namely, Dempo Travels. Franco, who came down to Goa in October, 2011, after being in Bahrain for six years with AlShamel Travels at NSA Bahrain for the US Navy, Fifth Fleet Office in Juffair as Operations Manager for CWT in Bahrain. Before coming to Bahrain he was with AlShamel Travels in Kuwait for 3 years.
A silver jubilarian, Franco celebrated his 25th Wedding Anniversary in April of this year with his beautiful wife Jessie who is a homemaker. Their son, Marlon, who has completed his BCA is currently a professional photographer and will be attending the World Youth Day Poland this August. Their daughter Melissa, having completed her BBA in Travel & Tourism, is looking forward to pursue a career in her father's footstep.
Franco recollects his beautiful memories of Bahrain. He describes Bahrain as the best place to live and work compared to Riyadh, Dubai and Kuwait where he has worked. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church Charismatic Prayer Group under the leadership of Fr. Dinesh Mendonca, that met regularly on Thursday evenings. He was an active member with the various airlines associations in Bahrain. He loved to play football and was seen on indoor and outdoor football fields during weekends and holidays.
Among the many friends in the travel trade, he was associated with Mr. Denzil D'Silva, a senior travel industry personnel at Omega Travels. The writer of this article, John Rebello too was his close associate.
When asked what prompted him to leave Bahrain and settle in Goa his immediate answer was: “I made an instant decision to move to Goa as India was bustling with activity, and I also felt it was the right time to head back and be a part of the growing economy. I have had no regrets and within a matter of six months, I came across an opening in a managerial position. The opening was Dempo Group of Companies a company as old as Goa’s Liberation and as modern, moving forward now in the Travel Division. It has been more than 4 years of service here and currently I am overlooking the operations of Dempo Travels Pvt. Ltd. Office in Panjim, one of the oldest IATA office in Goa and in its 66th year of business. My current role is of a Senior Manager and responsible for entire business development and day to day operations of the agency".
Any plans on retiring, his answer was: “No plans yet as I love the travel business but will slow down when the body says it’s time to but the mind says to continue”.
As to what message he wishes to convey to our Goan folks still in Bahrain. He sighed: “GOA is the place we GOANS can always associate ourselves and this connection is enough for each GOAN to come down and pursue their life’s goals, without a blink. Life is great out here as long as you keep yourself busy with some activity and rest assured, life will just take over and fall in place with the rest of your social life. I assure you will not miss your 3 F’s (Fish, Football & Feni). Viva Goa ! Viva Goenkara! Love to all my friends still in Bahrain...! ".

Ferry Service In Goa: The long-pending plan of activating Goa’s inland waterways to ferry
locals and tourists would finally come true with the central government planning to set up 10 terminalsl in Goa. The construction work of 10 jetties will begin from October and is expected to be completed in 6 to 8 months. The places identified for terminals are Panaji, Dona Paula, Ribandar, Betim, Britona, Old Goa, Chorao, Corjuvem and Pomburpa. Services will be initially introduced between Aldona to Panaji, Durbhat to Panaji, Baina to Dona Paula and Baina to Panaji. The shipping ministry is also taking up feasibility study of four more rivers of Chapora, Cumbarjua and Mapusa in the North and Sal in the South. This was announced recently by Union Minister of Shipping Nitin Gadkari.
On the 23rd of June this year, United Kingdom citizens voted in favour of the United Kingdom (UK) leaving the European Union (EU), in a process known as BREXIT. Several questions are being raised about the impact of this decision. Reis Malheiro, Associados RL, a law firm based in Lisbon has answered a range of questions on this matter. We bring excerpts of those replies that may be particularly useful to our Goans with Portuguese passports:
Will Portuguese emigrants residing in the UK be expelled? And what about UK citizens residing in Portugal?
It is highly unlikely that either the UK or the EU will expel any Portuguese or other EU citizens legally residing in their territory. Both blocks have a long standing tradition of respect for the rights acquired by national and foreign citizens, including the right to reside in their territory.
Will the employment contracts of Portuguese emigrants residing in the UK be terminated as a result of BREXIT? And UK citizens residing in Portugal?
It is unlikely that either the UK or the EU will adopt any laws in the sense of terminating employment contracts as a result of the UK leaving the EU. Both blocks have a long standing tradition of respect for the rights acquired by national and foreign citizens, including the valid right to employment.
Will it be more difficult for Portuguese citizens to reside in the UK and for UK citizens to reside in Portugal?
While the negotiation process lasts, it is unlikely that the conditions applicable to travel and residence will harden, because EU treaties and laws will remain in force in the UK, which will still be a member of the EU. Once the UK has left, the solution will depend on what is agreed between the parties, notably with regard to freedom of movement and establishment in the other party's territory. For this reason, we have advised our clients who wish to move to one or the other country to do so as soon as possible, in order to secure their rights, notably the right to reside in the territory in question.
A summary of all questions is available at: http://www.reismalheiro.com/brexit/
Salcette Shines: Salcete United became the first Goan team to win a football tournament at the Indian Club, when they were crowned champions of the Open Expatriate 5-A-Side tournament at the club in June. They defeated strong contenders Al Keralawi 2 -1 in the finals. Salcette fielded two teams in the tournament and ironically both met in the semi-finals with their ‘A’ team prevailing over their ‘B’ team with a 1 – 0 margin. It was a glorious month for Salcette Footballers as both their teams clashed in the finals to keep winners and runners-up trophies of the Young Goans Club 5-A-Side penalty shootout tournament held during Eid holidays. Meanwhile Goans teams failed to make it to the finals of the BMMI-YGC 8-A-Side Expatriate Football tournament played during Eid holidays. AlShayeb won the championship of this tournament defeating Marina FC via tie-breaker.
