Time To Come Together
The Goan community of Bahrain have a few events coming up in the months ahead. The Young Goans Club (YGC) joins the worldwide community in celebrating World Goa Day on September 21. Sirsaim Football Club kicks-off its 7-A-Side inter-village football tournament on September 14. Another popular gathering coming up is the musical show ‘Nach Goykara Nach’ by Jr. Louis Anthony on October 11. And the event that has drawn the maximum number of Goans together for years in the past is the feast of St. Francis Xavier in December.
There were times, when Goan events on the island drew huge crowds. Times have changed. Many of the old timers, who patronized in portraying our culture and traditions, are no more on the island. The new comers – specially the younger generation have missed the good old days, when YGC would provide a solid platform for all Goans to come together for social and sporting events – not forgetting the largely attended annual day of the club coinciding with the feast of their patron Saint Francis Xavier. In recent times, we are seeing a great decline in attendance for Goan events on the island.
Lives will feel more fulfilled and community would transit into a more beautiful place if we come together in large numbers. We at Xit-Koddi, aspire that we spread the word among our community of the upcoming events and try and maximize the attendance and show our Goenkarponn in Bahrain.
Jai Bahrain Goans !!!

Little Stars Cavan & Freya Move To London
Happy times come and go, but memories stay forever. And so it will be of our little Goan Stars in Bahrain – Cavan & Freya Pereira, as they move to United Kingdom with their mother Cancy Maria. Their father Frankie Pereira, a well known member of our community will continue to work with African & Eastern, Bahrain for a while. The family hails from Siolim, Goa. The Pereira siblings – Cavan born in Goa and Freya born in Bahrain began their schooling at Sacred Heart School (SHS), Bahrain. They will continue their studies in U.K. Cavan has just completed his Senior 4 levels (Standard X) while Freya will go to Senior 2 (Standard VIII). Besides doing extremely well at academics, both the youngsters have excelled in the field of music. Cavan, who has mastered the art of drumming with his self-skills, plays lead, base and rhythm guitar, piano and keyboards. He was a member of the SHS choir. Cavan was a member of the music ministry at Sacred Heart Church (SHC) under the leadership of late Wilfred Barreto and played regularly for 7 a.m mass on Fridays. Cavan also rendered music for the 4.15 p.m mass on Sundays under the leadership of Menino Fernandes. Cavan had a major role in the recently formed children’s band ‘YGC Serenaders’ also under the guidance of Menino Fernandes. With music flowing within the family, Freya too plays violin and has occasionally contributed for the choir services at SHC, especially during the novenas and feast of St. Francis Xavier. She was also a member of the YGC Serenaders. Freya was also in the altar server’s ministry at SHC. Fr. Darel Fernandes, assistant parish priest of SHC, recently presented appreciation certificates (seen in picture here) to Cavan and Freya on behalf of SHC for their services in this parish. The two sweet youngsters have used their God given talent for the glory of God and surely the Good Lord will continue to bless them in their journey ahead. As they bid farewell to Bahrain, Xit-Koddi (e-Newsletter of Bahrain Goans) wish them a pleasant, happy and successful settlement in United Kingdom. Bismark Fernandes Shines At International Film Festival
Bahrain Born ‘Bismark Fernandes’ has gained accolades at International Film Festival. As a part of his thesis completion at at Savannah College of Fine Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah Georgia, USA, Bismark created film "Expend". The 3.53 minutes film has been getting a positive response from film festivals across the globe. The tireless efforts of Bismark’s team and mentor Prof. Nathan Asquith, has a huge hand in the success of the making of this film.
The Director in a statement said “The film “Expend” portrays the human tendency to exploit resources for our petty desires. In the story, the character acquires this energy by bringing harm to other creatures in the process. The human character in the film does not feel remorse or guilt for his actions as this is part of his daily routine. The idea is not to condemn the use of our resources but to think of its source before wasting it. The medium of stop-motion was chosen to complement the idea of the story. Stop-motion is tactile and tangible. Everything on the other side of the screen is relatable and real. It pushes the boundaries of storytelling by connecting with the audience on a personal level.” The film selection for screening include Prague Independent Film Festival Czech Republic, Palm Springs International Animation Festival, USA, Gozo Film Festival, Wasteland Film Festival, Buskopolis Festival of Cinematic Oddities, Moonwhite Films International Film Festival, Mumbai, Over Mountain Animation Festival, USA, Short to the Point Film Festival, Play Film Festival, France and UK Monthly Film Festival. ‘Expend’ has won several international awards in this year and some of these are, SCAD Showcase Gold Award, USA, Best Super Short Animation/Stop Motion Film at Berlin Flash Film Festival, Aphrodite Film Award for Best Animation Short at New York, Royal Wolf Film Award for Best Animation Short at Los Angeles and Best Student Film at Calcutta International Cult Film Festival. A very few members of the Bahrain Goans community may remember Bismark Fernandes, a little kid in the 1990’s but many will remember his parents. His father Fredrick (Freddie) Fernandes, worked with Airlink/Circle Freight International (Bahrain) from 1984 to 2006. He was transfered to Oman in 2006, where he worked until 2014 and is now retired and settled in Benaulim Goa. His mother Florinda, who worked with Ministry of Health and later on with Al Ahli Bank left Bahrain in 1996, to be with the children in Goa for their studies. She passed away in 2013. Bismark, among the three siblings (sisters Bernince and Bernadette) began his schooling in Bahrain at the Asian School and moved to Goa and completed his high school at Loyala, Margao and did his higher secondary at Fr. Agnel Ashram, Verna. He went on with his studies at MAAER'S - MIT Institute of Design Pune, Maharastra. After graduation from Pune, Bismark worked for about 3 years in Mumbai for Bombay Design House as Animation Film Designer. He grew up as an artist and a professional and created animation shorts and commercials for the Indian television Industry. Having gained experience in the animation world, he decided to dive deeper, explore and learn more about the stop-motion medium and went on to complete his Master's Degree at Savannah College of Fine Art and Design in Savannah Georgia, USA.
