Xit-Koddi has learnt of two recent cases of Goans being stopped at Bahrain Airport and prevented from traveling out of the country, because of pending labor-related cases against them. Though the problems were eventually resolved, and the concerned persons traveled at a later date, it caused considerable panic and loss of money to the concerned families.
News reports for quite some time have focused on workers being barred from traveling out of Bahrain for pending legal cases against them. Many workers find out about these legal cases only at the time of traveling at the Bahrain Airport Immigration Office. This matter came up during an open house session held at the Indian Embassy recently. Xit-Koddi is glad to convey to its readers useful advice from Indian Ambassador, Dr. Mohan Kumar, on this subject.
He suggested that if anyone had reasonable apprehension that a court case was pending against them, they should check their status at the Labour Market Authority (LMRA) web site, or contact the Interior Ministry's Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs. Foreign workers can contact LMRA through its call center at 17506055, or e-mail lmra@lmra.gov.bh.
We hope this will be helpful to our readers.
With love.

It looks like just a couple of years ago that this cute little girl was running around with other kids at the Young Goans Club, up to all kinds of mischief. How time flies. Today, this little Goan star of Bahrain has to be addressed as Dr. Gwen Sascha Fernandes!!
A former student of Sacred Heart School, Gwen graduated in 2008 with a BSc. (Hons.) in Podiatry at the University of Wales. While completing her BSc. degree, she realised that she was well-suited to the systematic analysis and tenacity required of a clinical researcher. On graduation she applied for PhD funding, with the Research Capacity Building Collaboration (RCBC) Wales, while working in Bahrain. Being only 21 at the time, she was uncertain whether her application would succeed. The Cosyfeet Podiatry Award she won in 2007, and her work in wound care clinics with diabetic patients in Ghana, weighed in her favor while explaining the methodology and ideas she proposed to implement her research project. Gwen was delighted to be granted her PhD funding in early 2009 and went on to conduct research in the lower limb biomechanics of people with medial knee osteoarthritis. This research project included a random control trial to determine if modified laterally wedged orthoses could relieve pain in patients with arthritis of the knee. The results, obtained rigorously over 3 ½ years, were positive, and are now being written up for publication.
On completion of her PhD, Gwen has now taken up the post of clinical researcher at Nottingham University with the department of Academic Rheumatology. The project focuses on identifying the risk factors of hip,
knee, foot and ankle arthritis in current and retired professional footballers. She is funded by Arthritis Research UK, and is working with FIFA and the University of Oxford. "Professional footballers are likely to suffer from arthritis due to the intensity of the sport they play over a prolonged period of time. They are more likely to develop early onset arthritis compared to the general population,'' says Gwen. "We hope that the results can better inform training methods and improve the health-related quality of life of current and ex-professional footballers."
Gwen is the daughter of Gerard (Gerry) and Sarita Fernandes. The proud parents flew to London in July this year, especially for the graduation ceremony (see picture above), and her sisters, Amanda and Megan, were also present on the occasion.
Xit-Koddi warmly congratulates Dr. Gwen on her achievements, and wishes her continued success in her career.

Lucy Pereira.
The Goan community of Bahrain will miss the melodious voice of Lucy Pereira, as she winds down her stay in Bahrain after 30 long years. Lucy arrived in Bahrain in the year 1983, to join her husband Menino Pereira, a year after their marriage in Goa. Lucy was from a family with a background of music and a regular member of church activities in her village of Morjim, which she continued in her husband’s parish of Cansaulim. With the talent for singing that she possessed, Lucy was welcomed with open arms by the Sacred Heart Church (SHC) of Bahrain. She joined the choir in 1985 and has continued in this church group since then. She has also been cantor at Masses on days of obligation at the SHC. As a regular member of the choir for the Konkani mass on Sundays, Lucy’s has been a distinguished voice in the choir for the annual novena and feast celebrations of St. Francis Xavier at the SHC parish. Her musical talent has also earned her accolades for her presentation on the Konkani stage in Bahrain, with the rendering of solos and duets in Konkani musical shows.Lucy worked with a number of establishments in Bahrain over the last 30 years and her last stint was with the British Council. Her husband was with Modern National Bakery for almost 36 years, from where he retired in 2009. Their daughter Diana, who was born in Bahrain is married to Benedicto, and now resides in Singapore. Their son Donny suffered an untimely death in a road accident in Goa four years ago.Lucy expressed her thanks and appreciation to all those who had encouraged and guided her over the years. May love and unity always prevail in our community, she told Xit-Koddi, as her parting message to Goans on the island.
We wish Lucy and Menino a peaceful and happy stay in our sucegad Goa.
