Another Happy Anniversary.
Xit-Koddi completes yet another year and that fills me with pride and satisfaction for having served our community in a little way for six years. All the little notes of appreciation that I get from readers, from time to time, is a great encouragement to me to use my free time towards this task of connecting past and present Goans of Bahrain.
On this sixth anniversary, I would like to sincerely thank all those who help me in publishing this e-newsletter. Blake D’Souza has provided the cover design over the years. John Rebello has been very supportive of Xit-Koddi during his tenure in Bahrain, and is now contributing from Goa. The Konkani section has received valuable assistance from Fausto V. Da Costa, Vincy Quadros and Daniel F. DSouza. Shanti Karuna, too has been instrumental in providing me with articles and moral support. And let me not forget my dear readers, for whom Xit-Koddi is prepared because you are there to savour and share it.
Once again my heartfelt gratitude to all.

Restriction on Carrying Indian Currency Abroad: According to the latest directive by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), any NRI or foreigner leaving India cannot have any Indian currency on their person. But they could carry Rs. 10,000 in person into the airport till the duty-free shopping or departure lounges, but cannot have it in their possession at boarding. He or she would have to surrender the Indian currency into a foreign currency of their choice before boarding. This would be facilitated by kiosks near the immigration counters at international airports where the exchange of the rupee for foreign currency would be rendered before boarding their flight. It had been common among NRIs to carry Indian currency while departing, mainly for the convenience of not having to exchange Forex into rupee when they return. This rule has been lying dormant as part of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). It is only now that the central bank is trying to enforce it.

Ex-Resident of Bahrain Bags Award In Canada: Radio Mango presented Francis D'Costa, a former resident of Bahrain with this year's award for his immense contribution in promoting Konkani language, traditions and culture in Canada. Francis from Saligao, Goa was actively involved in social and sporting activities of our community, while in Bahrain. He is still remembered for his great achievements in hockey on the island. Francis played for the Young Goans Club in his earlier years and later led his own team 'Wonderworld' to several championships in Bahrain. The award in Canada comes to him for his unstinting support for Konkani Tiatrs, community shows, soccer tournaments, field hockey, seniors social gatherings, religious events, picnics, club and village tournaments for carom and scrabble. Francis had earlier received the Volunteer of the Year award in the Scarborough riding, from Prime Minister Jen Chretien. The award was presented to him by Ontario Minister of Finance Charles Sousa, as Radio Mango celebrated its 4th anniversary of broadcasting Konkani program 'Amchi Bhas – Amchem Sangeeth' in North America. Xit-Koddi extends heartiest CONGRATULATIONS to Francis D'Costa.

Dominic D’Souza (Bahrain): The article on ex-residents of Bahrain is very good. Their message is a good advice to Goans still working in Bahrain. I am glad to know about success of Cajie Pereira in your last issue. Obituaries are a sad piece of news but good information. God bless the team of Xit-Koddi for giving us all the news.

lad next to her? Very few will identify him unless I introduce him to our community. He is not new to Bahrain though! Much water has flown under the Muharraq Bridge since I last saw Gladston Tavares in the year 2000. He was just 10, then. A few years after the death of his father Max Tavares, his mother Effie Tavares along with his younger brother Gavin left Bahrain for good. A turn of fate into good fortune took the family to the U.S. Gladston completed his graduation at Fordham University, New York, and went on to complete his flight operations studies through Aerosim Flight Academy at Florida. He started his career as a Flight Instructor, moving up as co-pilot with American Airlines from 2014 to 2016. It was DESTINY one may say, that got Gladston closer to the place where he was born, with an assignment with Fly Dubai as co-pilot. He is based in Dubai, now. He was on a short visit to Bahrain over the weekend. It was a sheer coincidence that Gladston happened to be in Bahrain for the YGC Bandra Fair. This is one event, among many other activities that his parents Effie and late Max used to be part of organizing teams in Bahrain. To my question about his memories of Bahrain, Gladstone was quick to recollect vivid memories of round-the-year festivities of all occasions at YGC. ‘YGC was the spot to Go’, if not daily at least once a week – he concluded his long chat with me.

Pope Francis To Visit U.A.E. Pope Francis has accepted an invitation to visit the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The date of the visit will be decided later after mutual coordination, but all arrangements are being made by the two countries. The invite from the President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was delivered to the Pope by Minister of State for Tolerance Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi. The invitation emphasized religious tolerance and shared values of humanity that bind all peoples to live in peace, cooperation and harmony. Meanwhile late last month Pope Francis welcomed the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan (in picture here) at the Vatican. Abu Dhabi is one of seven emirates that constitute the UAE.
Dinner for A Cause At Awali - Bahrain
A Dinner Dance for a Cause entitled “A NIGHT IN AWALI” will be held on Friday, 18th November from 7.30 p.m. onwards at the Bapco Club in Awali, organized by our Lady of Visitation Church. Invitation cards are available with Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Church, Manama, Fr. Freddy D’Souza.
“We are lovers of Tiatr and never lose an opportunity to miss any show that takes place,” said Andrew and Isabella Vaz in a combined tone to me, when I met them at Kala Academy, Panjim, recently. The couple, former residents of Bahrain, hail from Sant Anton Vaddo, Goa Velha.
Andrew and Isabella left Bahrain in the year 2013 and are now settled in Goa. They have great memories of Bahrain. Andrew who came to Bahrain in the year 1974 was employed with Jassim & Sanad, whilst Isabella who joined him in the year 1978 worked with the Ministry of Labour for a pretty long time and was with the Ministry of Interior, before retiring to Goa.
The couple is blessed with two children, Danka and Ignatius. Danka is settled in Mumbai with her family, whereas Ignatius is also married and lives in in California. While in Bahrain, Andrew kept a low profile, but Isabella was a lector at Sacred Heart Church and used to attend Night Vigils organized by the English Prayer Group. They never missed the novenas and feast of St. Francis Xavier in December. Both socialized at the Young Goans Club where they were members, attending all functions organized by the club.
When asked how they spend their retired life in Goa, both said in one voice: “We love gardening and both of us are so engrossed that we don’t know how the time passes; and of course we don’t miss any Tiatrs. We love and miss our friends in Bahrain, where we used to meet regularly, either at church services, functions, picnics, parties or in the club. Our message to our Goans in Bahrain is to live in peace and harmony, and come and visit your homes in Goa. Goa is not like before; it is changing into different cultures. In streets you hear outsiders conversing more in other languages than in our own Konkani,” lamented Andrew while concluding his chat with me.
Goans love music. The music and dance of Goa are a rich cultural blend of the West and East. Goans love to hear Konkani, Hindi and English, occasionally with a little Portuguese music thrown in for good measure. The latest emergence of GnI Project (Glen Pacheco and Iggy Fernandes) on the musical scene has filled the gap for quality music for Goans in Bahrain.
GnI project played scintillating music during the recently held Goa Day Cum Bandra Fair of Young Goans Club. The duo dazzled the young and old with English, Hindi and Konkani melodies and keeping the crowd on the dance floor past midnight of the daylong event. GnI Project is now scheduled to render musical score for the forthcoming musical show ‘Bahrainche Goykar 3’ on Nov.3.
The great advantage of GnI Project is their adaptability to provide magical music moments for any function. They can simply play wonderful music for listening pleasure or they can switch to music to get you on to the dance floor. Our best wishes to Glen and Iggy, as they create the sound of Goan music on the island.

World Goa Day & Bandra Fair Captivates Bahrain: The World Goa Day and Bandra Fair celebrations created Goan atmosphere at the Baan Saeng Thai Restaurant in Adliya, Bahrain on September 9. The event organized by the Young Goans Club provided an opportunity for a large gathering to witness the Goan culture, traditions, food and games. Among the top items to draw great applause from the crowd were the Dekhnni, Goencho Mando, Children's Song and the group song 'Channeachi Rati'. The colorful costumes corresponding in pattern, color and design made the items presented look glorious and pleasing to the eye of the audience. 'Goa's Got Talent', contest though with a few entries added spice to the occasion. The games stalls gave a 'Bandra Fair' decor to the event, while the food stalls served Goan delicacies throughout the day. The GnI Project (Glen and Iggy), the recently formed 2 men band played scintillating music to keep the young and old on the dance floor throughout the day. This was a Goan event in Bahrain, after a gap of long period. Seby De Divar – Enthrall Bahrainkars: They came! They performed! And they conquered the hearts of Bahrainkars! This is how the musical show of Maestro Shahu Almeida, organized by Young Goans Club (YGC) can be summed up. Seby De Divar stole the limelight of the show, held on September 29 at the Baan Saeng Thai Restaurant Auditorium in Adliya. The versatile artiste flown in from Goa sang three solos and a duet with Gracy Morais, which were all cheered and encored. Seby De Divar was admired for his interaction with the audience during the songs and for the variety of his topics. The Kuwait trio of Cajetan-Michael-Mario was at their usual best in their two items with their inimitable style of showmanship. Comedian Nelson was superb in vocal and facial expression, joining remarkably well with Mangalorean Lucy Aranha in the comedy skits. The unique opening and closing of group songs were a tribute to Konkani artistes of yesteryears. Clemmie Pereira, Laurente Pereira, Bab Agnel, Katty de Navelim and our own Bahrainkar Francis De Sanguem were all applauded for their songs. All in all, Director Shahu Almeida's choice of artistes and songs confirmed "Tiatristponn Devachem Dennem". The YGC felicitated their youngest committee member Blake D'Souza (4th from right in above picture) during the show by cutting his birthday cake.
