Feast of St. Francis Xavier and Young Goans Club.
Goans in Bahrain are very fortunate to be in a country that has religious freedom. We should also gratefully remember the early Goans who worked here facing many difficulties which we do not face now. They left a legacy and tradition for us, namely, the Feast of St. Francis Xavier (SFX).
The celebration of the feast was started over 60 years ago by a small group of Goans which later formed the Young Goans Club (YGC) with SFX as its patron saint. Since then, Goans in Bahrain, whether members of YGC or not, joined to joyfully celebrate the feast on December 3, every year at Sacred Heart Church (SHC). The festivities received a boost when Fr. Felicio Diniz, a Goan priest, took over as parish priest of SHC in 1989 and started the concelebrated Mass of the feast of SFX in Konkani which was offered by the YGC over the years. The club paid most of the expenses of this celebration at the church, but had no say in either the liturgy or the collection of funds which remained under the church.
A couple of years back, certain elements toyed with the idea of celebrating this feast at the church level, and ending a 60 year-old tradition. Senior members of the Goan community and YGC committee managed to successfully explain the history of this feast to the last two parish priests of SHC and retained this age old tradition. This year, as the feast was approaching, advice to the SHC came from Bishop Camillo Ballin, to celebrate the feast at the Parish level, and not by YGC. Unfortunately, it is learnt that one of the Goans wrote to the Bishop against the club celebrating this feast. Attempts by the Goan Community to convince the Bishop of our tradition have failed. The feast of SFX, this year will be led by the Konkani Community of Sacred Heart Church.
For the last 60 years, it did not matter much to many, who offered the feast Mass of SFX, Goans simply enjoyed this convenience of devotion to our Goencho Saib in Bahrain. However, to maintain and follow this tradition is a respect to the Goans of yesteryears, who started this devotion in Bahrain. We also see it as a way of strengthening our identity under the only registered institution of Goans - The YGC. And above all, we must avoid dividing the community in religious matters. This year, as the novenas of SFX are in progress at SHC, Goans seem to be very hurt and unhappy with the turn of events of this festivity and that the image of Goans has taken a beating. ‘Tumche modem ekvott nam’ is what is being said.
We, at Xit-Koddi, feel that this is just a bad leaf in the history of Goans in Bahrain and hope that better sense will prevail among all sections of our community and look forward to see them all united under St. Francis Xavier as one big family of Goans in Bahrain, in the years to come.
Happy Feast of St. Francis Xavier To All.

Portuguese Passport and Goans: A section of the press recently published reports that the Portuguese embassy in India has recommended to its government that the government end the policy of granting nationality to Goan residents born before December 20, 1961, and their descendants to improve bilateral ties between the two countries and avoid legal disputes over dual citizenship.
However, according to a report in the Herald daily of Goa, the Ambassador of Portugal to India, Jorge Roza De Oliveira, has denied that there is a move on the part of his government to change Portuguese nationality laws that apply to Goans and people from Daman and Diu. He further said that recent media reports suggesting this, were incorrect. Though this has come as a huge relief to thousand of eligible Goans who are in the process of obtaining Portuguese passports, many are closely following the cases against two MLA’s of Goa – Caitu and Ticlo - in relation to their Portuguse nationality. Fr. Felicio Diniz and the Sacred Heart Church, Bahrain.
The Sacred Heart Church (SHC) Bahrain embarked on year-long celebrations to mark its Diamond Jubilee. As we enter into an eventful year of the SHC, Xit-Koddi salutes a Goan, who is largely responsible for the facilities available to the faithful at this parish in Bahrain. He is Rev. Fr. Felicio Diniz, who was the parish priest of SHC for 15 years since 1989.In this jubilee year, it is our pleasure to recall the pioneering role of Fr. Diniz in the history and spiritual growth of the church, and recall some of his memorable achievements.
* Within a year of his arrival Fr. Diniz organized the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the church in 1990, catering to distinguished guests from several countries and bringing profound joy to the parish.
* Recognizing the spiritual needs of the large multi-national parish community, Fr. Diniz initiated an action plan and installed lay ministers. Liturgical and administrative responsibilities were allocated within the parish groups, to give more time to the clergy for spiritual work.
* Fr. Diniz undertook and completed the construction of a multi-purpose hall, a beautiful and well equipped place of worship, in record time in 1991. A second major project was the convent for the Comboni Sisters, which he built, replacing the old convent building in 1992.
* Fr. Diniz formally introduced and installed various lay ministries in our parish, namely Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Ushers, Altar Servers and Catechists. All these ministries provide valuable support to the parish. He also introduced masses in Arabic, French, Konkani, Malayalam, Tamil and Tagalog.
* Family Bulletin’, a church newsletter was introduced in 1992. Family Day, as part of Christmas celebrations, was introduced to build fellowship within the parish communities. Parishioners look forward to this full day event of joy and fun every year.
* The other major project of Fr. Diniz was the Third Millennium Building which provides offices for priests, rooms for parish groups and for catechism classes. The building also houses suitable living accommodation for the clergy. Fr. Diniz also renovated the mother church.
The SHC witnessed a great revival after Fr. Diniz arrived. The obligations services that were held outdoors in the hot and humid summer and in the cold and windy winter are now held indoors, thanks to Fr. Diniz. Let us offer and give thanks to God for the ministry of this pastor, a son of Goa, who is now based at St. Michael’s church in Sharjah.
We posted Fr. Felicio Diniz’ picture on the Bahrain Goans Face Book on the day SHC launched the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Some of the many comments that were posted there are reproduced below:
Lona D'Souza: God bless you dearest Fr. Felicio Diniz, and may the moments we enjoy at our SHC, always give us a grateful heart and pray to God for you.
Claude Fernandes:SHC is vibrant today because of Fr. Felicio. Wherever you may be, I salute you and pray to God to give you good health to carry on His mission.
Savio Ribeiro: Fr Felicio was a builder, hugely responsible for building the multipurpose hall in 1991. He continues to build communities. We pray that The Almighty bless him always.
Savio D'Sa: Fr. Diniz, you are a true pioneer. SHC would not be what it is today without your work.
Criss Dcosta: I really appreciate you Father, because you are the real pillar of the SHC. It would not be what it is today without your hard work. Thank you and God bless you always.
Carmina Fernandes e Correia: Fr. Felicio's hard work at SHC will always remain in the hearts of parishioners. As we celebrate the Diamond Jubilee we salute you Rev. Fr. Felicio Diniz. May God bless you always.
Reshma Vaz: Truly a wonderful person who was able to build such a beautiful place of worship. May the Almighty shower you with abundant blessings and good health. You will always be in our prayers.
John Rebello: Kudos to the creator who made life easy for the clergy and parishioners who enjoy all the comforts to praise and worship God in His assembly. God bless Fr. Felicio with good health to serve the Lord in His vineyard.
Andrew Fernandes: How true! He surely is the one (responsible) for all our comfort. Beside that, he helped in turning me into a better Catholic. Thanks, Fr. Diniz.
Agnelo Silveira: Fr. Diniz is a true pillar of the SHC and we are proud of you. Parishioners now enjoy all the comforts because of your hard work and dedication. God bless you and give you good health.
Bella Baptista: Thank you, Lord, for blessing us with the gift of our dear Fr Felicio. Please continue keeping him in Your tender love and care. Mama Mary, please intercede for all his needs. Dear Fr. Felicio you will remain in our prayers and your memory will never grow old.
