The Good Old Days Are Here Again!!!
The month of June brought back memories of the good old days of the Goan community in Bahrain. The month featured three entertaining events that highlighted Goan music, song, culture, traditions and sports. A report of these events appears elsewhere in this issue of Xit-Koddi.
Despite all the amusement these activities provide us, what concerns me is the opportunity that these events give our community to come together on a common platform. It gives us a chance to meet many of our Goans on the Island, with whom we would not come in contact, if it were not for these events. These occasions bring our community closer to each other.
Secondly, though three different groups were involved in organizing these events, it was heartening to see Goans participating in a spirit of unity and harmony.
May this spirit of Goans in Bahrain continue to grow.
Sincerely yours,
= GR Crasto

Limit to carry Indian Currency: The Reserve Bank of India has now permitted residents and non-residents, except Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, to carry up to Rs. 25,000 in Indian currency notes while leaving the country. Earlier, Indians travelling abroad were permitted to carry only up to Rs. 10,000, while foreigners were not allowed any Indian currency while leaving the country. This information has been circulated by ‘Swadesh’ the monthly newsletter of the State Bank of India.
Joseph M. Fernandes (Bahrain): Thank you for keeping us updated with news of Goans in Bahrain. It was nice of your team to come up with an amazing contest for football lovers. I would like to suggest that you have some quiz or competitions for our Goan children in Bahrain. (Editors Note: We have several ideas, but our resources are limited as of now. However we have taken note of your excellent suggestion.)

Patoianchem Fest: For many members of our community, who will be on holiday in Goa during August, we recommend you attend the traditional Patoianchem Fest. The eco-friendly people’s festival is held every year on August 15 at the Socorro Church grounds, promoting Goan culture and heritage with the best of local music and food etc. The event features plenty of free Sannas, Patoieos, Pez, Pudde, and other Goan sweets all served on Patraio and Kotteio.
Sandra & Paul Sequeira (Goa/Mumbai): We lived in Bahrain for about 15 years. Those were the best 15 years of our lives where we shared quality time as a family and made friends who were as good as an extended family to us, and most importantly I made a HOME back in India. We enjoyed the wonderful times at the Young Goans Club, which was a place to celebrate all festivities. The club kept the Goan community under one banner, be it social, sports or cultural activities. Of late the Xit-Koddi e-newsletter is doing a superb job nourishing all Goans who lived and live in Bahrain. Thanks to the Xit- Koddi team.

First of all, you ask me if the God of Christians forgives one who doesn't believe and doesn't seek the faith. Premise that - and it's the fundamental thing - the mercy of God has no limits if one turns to him with a sincere and contrite heart; the question for one who doesn't believe in God lies in obeying one's conscience.

Xit-Koddi is pleased to feature in this column, Jr. Louis Anthony Fernandes, who was the co-director of the recently held Konkani Musical Show Bahrainche Goykar.

Mother of Amber and Anora.
Jr. Louis Anthony has been on the Konkani stage of Bahrain since his arrival on the island in 1999. He has the talent of a professional tiatrist and has excelled in various roles over the years. Be it singing, acting, directing or writing, he has carved a niche for himself among tiatr lovers of Bahrain. He has been a part of almost every Konkani program in Bahrain for a decade and half. Regardless of his first choice for writing, directing and acting in comedy skits, Louis has rendered solos and duets in a number of shows in Bahrain.
The very important attribute of Louis, that Xit-Koddi appreciates the most, is his encouragement and assistance of new faces to become actors. It is because of his endeavor that many new actors and singers are today seen on the Konkani stage of Bahrain. Louis, who acted in tiatrs of several directors before arriving into Bahrain, does not miss an opportunity to take part in tiatrs whenever he goes on holiday to Goa. He has directed his own plays as well as in Goa.
Anv Kollokant Sandlom was the first full-fledged tiatr written and directed by Louis in Bahrain in 2006, apart from several of his short plays and comedy skits over the years. ‘My endeavors are not only for entertainment but to promote our mother tongue Konkani, as well’ he told Xit-Koddi. The Young Goans Club honored him for his contribution to tiatr in Bahrain during the last show Bahrainche Goykar.
Louis is married to Lourdin, who is also a well known actor and singer. Louis and Lourdin combine well to sing duets as well as in comedy skits. Their daughter Faustina, also played a minor role in the last show.
Xit-Koddi wishes Louis and his family many more glorious years on the Konkani stage.

The other one who did well, was cute little Rachel Fernandes who won the first prize in the children’s category of the ‘Sao Joao’ costume competition. Rachel has also appeared in Xit-Koddi in the past, having won the fancy dress competition at the Annual Family Day get-together of the Sacred Heart Church. She is the daughter of Priscilla and Remiz Fernandes.
This Month Special: Glimpses of ‘Goykarponn’ in Bahrain.
In the past, the Goan Community of Bahrain was known for its glamorous festivities. The Young Goans Club (YGC) was the centre of celebrations of every Goan event, round the year, replicating every celebration that took place back home in Goa. These festivities facilitated meeting and getting acquainted with Goans on the island. Slowly and steadily, this trend has dwindled and we hardly get a function or two celebrating our culture and traditions. However, after a pretty long time the month of June witnessed three events that showed glimpses of ‘Goykarponn’ in Bahrain.
Bahrainche Goykar, a Konkani musical show, regaled a full house audience at the Baan Saeng Thai Restaurant auditorium on June 19. The Little Vaz Sisters, 'Lanisha and Delisha' from Dubai (see picture to left), deserved the standing ovation they got for their wonderful songs. The Dubai Trio (Edwin, Manuxin and Anthony) were at their best, as usual, with comments on political subjects adding spice with poster displays. Lawry Travasso, who was flown in from Goa stole the show with his inimitable voice and style of singing. Lawry got the entire audience joining him in singing Yeo Moga to end the show to thunderous applause. Shahu Almeida from Kuwait added beauty to the music joining the Bahrain-based musicians led by Bernard Fernandes. The comedy skits in between the songs, had dialogue to tickle your funny bone. The Bahrain-based artistes provided excellent support to the show with their singing and acting. Many of them, who were first timers, were applauded by the audience. The Bahrain based female actors, who took part in the show are seen here posing for a picture at back-stage for Xit-Koddi. The show under the patronage of Young Goans Club, was directed by Jr. Luis Anthony and Claude Farrier, who were felicitated during the show by the YGC for their contribution to the Konkani stage along with the music director, Bernard Fernandes. The YGC also presented mementos to the visiting overseas artistes. Godwin D’Cruz was also on the donors list with medals to all the artistes. Ritchies Corner, the only Goan Restaurant in Bahrain catered Goan delicacies for the show. The CRAB Entertainers created a Goan atmosphere at the Papillion Restaurant in Manama on June 26, with the traditional Goan Sao Joao festivities. A crowd of over 200 people with festive headgear, enjoyed the evening of fun and merry-making.
The highlight of the evening was a Konkani singing competition and best Sao Joao Costume contest. Aaron D’Costa (juniors) and Francis Sequeira (seniors) were the winners in the singing competition. Rachel Fernandes (children’s category), Chris Noronha and Francisco D’Costa (senior group) were chosen as the best dressed contestants. Recently married two Goan couples Trudy/Alvito and Norita/Savio (seen in the picture here) served the traditional 'Vojem' (Goan fruits & sweets) to the attendees. DJ Lucio provided music for dancing. Menino Fernandes alongside Edwin Dias, compered the show in Konkani. The Crab Entertainers expressed their gratitude for all the sponsors, well wishers for their support for the event and the Goan Community members who attended in large numbers. A DVD of this event is now available with Blake D'souza and he can be contacted on Mobile: 3440 4013. Our congratulations to CRAB (Claude, Rocky, Alvito and Bonny) Entertainers for a well organized show with Goan flavour and color.
The month culminated with a group of ladies, under the banner of ‘United Goan Ladies Squads’ organizing a seven-a-side football tournament on June 27, at the Al Nojoom grounds in Gudaibiya. Six teams took part in this tournament on a league-cum-knock-out basis. The tournament played for the ‘Friendship Cup’, was won by Rodrigues-The Chillers defeating Godinho-The Snipers with a 2 - 1 score. The other teams that took part in the tournament were Ferrao-the Warriors, Gonsalves-The Crushers, Fernandes-The Riders and Dcosta-The Rockers. This was a first of its kind tournament organized by Goan ladies in Bahrain under the leadership of Succurine Rodrigues. This is a sporting event to keep Goans united with a bond of friendship, Succurine told Xit-Koddi on the sidelines of the tournament. The prize distribution of the tournament is scheduled for July 31, at the Baan Saeng Thai Restaurant with games and entertainment.
No one from among the 82 entries got the correct answer to all four questions. Emille D'Souza with three correct answers scooped the runners-up trophy. Danby D'Costa and Leya Dias with two correct answers won consolation prizes. Most of the participants in the main contest predicted Brazil/Netherlands in the finals and Muller or Messi to win the Golden Boot.
In our contest on Facebook the winners were:
Contest No. 4 - Agnelo Silveira
Contest 5 - Jarita Andrade D'Costa, Danby D'Costa, Cirilo Barreto, Elias Fernandesa and Joaquim Froes.
Contest 6 - Gregory D'Silva.
Congratulations to all the winners. Kindly contact - 36736383 to collect your prizes.
