Concerns of Indians In The Gulf
The falling oil prices have hit the economies of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The news about job cuts and companies not granting increments has become the main subject of discussion among expatriates in the Gulf. Bahrain has seen the recent increase in the cost of fuel locally following the withdrawal of the subsidy on meat, a couple of months back.
There are plans to withdraw subsidies on water, electricity and other utility charges. Some GCC countries are contemplating imposing several kinds of taxes on expatriates, including tax on remittances. The economic change is going to have a major impact on Indians in the Gulf. It is going to be extremely difficult to balance the growing cost of living against income, especially for those living with families.
It is time for the expatriates to carefully look at the changing scenario and adopt measures for a comfortable future.

Goans in Britain: According to media reports there are just over 20,000 Goans with Portuguese passports, living in the United Kingdom. More than half of them are in the market town of Swindon. It is estimated that another 34,000 persons with Portuguese passports from the former Portuguese colonies of Brazil, Angola and Cape Verde have the right to live and work in the UK as EU citizens. The UK Home Office declined to say if it would close the migration loopholes. But a spokesman said: “We want to reduce the current very high level of population flows from within the EU into the UK.”

This Is How Goa Is Being Destroyed: The recent news hype in Goa is about the Goa Governments dubious acts de-classifying coconut tree as ‘Grass or Shrub’ and the ‘Super law’ giving omnibus clearance, not withstanding all local laws to any project with an investment of 5 crores and above. ‘This is how Goa is being destroyed’ says Claude Alvares, an environmentalist in Goa. We bring our readers a link to his opinion on NDTV.

His Inspirational Quotes
Antonio Piedade da Cruz, also known as "A. P. d'Cruz" or simply “Cruzo”, was a twentieth century painter and sculptor from Goa. Born on 22 August 1895 in the village of Velim in Salcete, he joined Bombay’s Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in 1916 and went on to study in Europe, where he applied to the Berlin University of the Arts and won a scholarship and the status of “Master Student” (Meisterschüler).
Cruzo caught the attention of the Portuguese Ambassador in Berlin when a German newspaper described him a "Portuguese from India", and asked the paper to rectify the error, insisting that he was "pure Indian". With the support of the Ambassador, Cruzo held his first solo exhibition in Lisbon in October 1925. He returned to India following a request by the Maharaja of Travancore.
Cruzo settled in Bombay and became well known as a sculptor and portrait painter both among Indian royalty and the expatriate elite. Among the people who sat for his portraits were Philip Chetwode, Louis Mountbatten, Lallubhai Samaldas.
His "Cruzo Studio" in Brabourne Stadium became an important meeting place, including for members of the Goa liberation movement. Despite Cruzo's association with the rich and famous, his main work focused on poverty and social injustice as well as hard-working farmers
A meeting with Mahatma Gandhi gave Cruzo fresh inspiration and from then onwards, political themes dominated his work, first the struggle for independence, partition and later the Bangladesh Liberation War and the Vietnam War.
Cruzo died in 1982 but remains one of Goa's most notable artists.
........ that the Se Cathedral, of Old Goa is the largest church in India ? It is one of the oldest and most celebrated religious buildings in Goa and among the largest churches in Asia. The Se Cathedral's tower houses a large bell known as the "Golden Bell" on account of its rich tone. It is said to be the largest in Goa, and one of the best in the world. The Se Cathedral also houses a baptismal font made in 1532 which was used by Saint Francis Xavier, the patron saint of Goa, to baptise several Goans.
Friends Helping Hands, Bahrain.
There is nothing more beautiful than someone going out of their way to make life beautiful for others. The special Gulab issue of December 2015, focusing on Goans in Bahrain, has shed light on much of the good work of our community members in Bahrain. Gulab is a Konkani magazine in circulation for 33 years, and in this issue has highlighted many eminent Goans in Bahrain in different walks of life. However, what touched our heart was the work of a group of our community members, calling themselves ‘Friends Helping Hands’.
Pio Fernandes, an eminent Konkani writer makes a heartbreaking write up on this group in Gulab. It is learnt that years back a group of about 12 friends got together and contributed 1 dinar each, every month and created a fund. They undertook selling of telephone Sim cards and added the little commission they would gain, to this fund. They would use this to help any of their members in times of emergency. Gradually, the members having come across cases of less fortunate ones, decided to help the needy from their meager contribution. ‘We are glad that our humble contribution can bring a smile and joy on the faces of the needy’, said Domnic Pereira (seen in the picture), a member of this group from Chorao, Goa. The helping hands they have extended have reached out to several persons over the years. They include help in buying air-tickets and even cash assistance to workers without pay for several months. Back home too in India, they have contributed whatever little possible, towards patients with cancer and kidney ailments. There are cases where they have reached out in supporting poor children to buy schoolbooks. The group has 20 members now. Among them are Anthony Cruz, Succoro Soares, Bernard, Samir Sheikh, Nelson, Franskina, Stella, Martina, Succor Fernandes, Vincy and Domnic Pereira. With the knowledge that we have gained about them, there is nothing we can do but salute them for the silent charitable work they do in our community. They need to be applauded, for there are no stars or heroes among them. All of them come from low-income groups and many of them are domestic helpers. Xit-Koddi assures all possible help to the group ‘Friends Helping Hands’.
Bachelors Win Golden Ball: The Goan Bachelors picked up the Golden Ball award defeating the Married Goans 3 - 1 in the finals of the three-match series played at Riffa Sports Club grounds on January 22. Vincent D’Costa organized and managed this 11-A-Side challenger series for the Bahrain Goan footballers.
Meanwhile, dubbed as married to ‘Football’, Vincent D’Costa air-dashed to Goa to celebrate his Silver Wedding Anniversary. He is seen here with his wife Philomena on their Silver Wedding Day ceremony at the Our Lady Of Miracles Church, Sirsaim, Tivim, Goa on December 22, 2015.
Later at a reception at the Cansa Recreation Centre, Tivim, around 30 members of the football fraternity from Bahrain were present to celebrate the event, thereby showing their appreciation for his contribution to this sport in Bahrain. Xit-Koddi, joins the Bahrain Goan footballers and wishes him many more happy years of married life.
