The 1st anniversary issue of Xit-koddi brought in several messages of appreciation and goodwill. Our sincere thanks to all our readers.
"365 days of Goykaranchi Xit-koddi", was the headline of an article, in the Goan daily 'Herald' courtesy of my colleague John Rebello. This article can be found as an attachement at the bottom of this newsletter, for those who wish to read it.
Going into the second year, Xit-Koddi will be getting a new look and be jazzed up with some new columns. We invite our readers to contribute and add their own masala to make our Xit-Koddi more tastier. Many of our readers will know about past Goan village groups, sporting teams, social groups etc. We also have so many Goan kids, teenagers and youth on the island talented in some field or the other. Xit-Koddi intends to cover and highlight past Goan groups as well as our gifted and talented young stars in Bahrain. This goal cannot be achieved single handedly, as our proverb of the month 'eka hatan tallieo marunk zainant'. Your support is indispensable and counting on your co-operation, we are marching into the second year.
Until our next issue - its time to extend our greetings to you and your families for a very happy feast of our Goencho Saib . May St. Francis Xavier bless us all.
Yours Truly = GR Crasto

Jet Airways Update: In view of several reports in print and electronic media, Jet Airways has clarified that the airline will allow carriage of food items in checked baggage that are packed dry and not prone to seepage. Jet airways has only disallowed carriage of improperly packed perishable food items, in normal ice or liquids in containers that are susceptible to spillage or seepage. This announcement by Jet Airways Bahrain, will ease the difficulties of Goans bound to Gulf, who were denied to carry their favorite meat products from Goa.
Dekhni and Mando in Bahrain: 'Anv Saiba poltodi vetam' the most popular dekhni song cum dance enthralled the large gathering at Bishop Trinanzi Auditorium, Manama on October 29. Dekhni, a mixture of Indian melody and western rhythm was performed by Goan women adorned in colorful Indian sarees under the guidance of Angela Barretto. The item was a part of the programme to bid farewell to Fr. Dinesh Mendonca and to Congratulate Fr. Uldarico Camus as the new parish priest of SHC by the Konkani Community of the parish. Another item that captured the hearts of the audience during the programme was a mando presentation arranged by Maria Pereira. The group performed musical operetta graced with traditional mando costumes depicting the meeting point of Indian and western musical traditions. Nazia D'Souza: Xit-Koddi believes that every person is born with some talent or the other, but only a few make the efforts to polish those talents and shine out to the rest of the world. Through this column we intend to bring to light the talents and achievements of our Goan kids, teenagers and youngsters in Bahrain. We begin this column by covering a child who has inherited musical talents from her parents. She is Nazia D'Souza.
Daughter of Xaverina and Nazareth D'Souza, hailing from Goa Velha, Nazia is currently the XIth class student of the Indian School. She completed her 'O' levels at the Sacred Heart School, earlier this year. A known smiling face at Sacred Heart Church (SHC), Nazia was instilled with the love for music from her mother, who used her talent for music to praise God. Nazia plays keyboards for several masses at the SHC and is is frequently seen playing for konkani services and for the children's mass. She also renders her musical talent on occasions like wedding and anniversary masses. Nazia was also in the alter servers ministry of SHC for 5 years or so. Through further encouragement from her dad, who organises the choir for Sunday konkani mass, Nazia learned to read music and plays violin with ease. She reaped the fruits of her talent by winning the Gold Medal in drumming and Silver Medal in Violin at the school level competitions held at the St. Christopher's School. Besides her musical excellence, Nazia is also an avid sports person and was a member of the Sacred Heart School basketball team.
With interests in music, net surfing and reading, Nazia intends to make a career in medicine. Xit-Koddi wishes her a bright future. Nazia, was asked to comment on any subject in our mother tongue konkani and she said, " Maka music-acho chodd mog anik music sogleank khoxeal korta'.

Seby D'Souza: He arrived in Bahrain, when he was just 6 months old. Though he is a grandfather now, his delusive look gives him a young heroic image. Tracking footprints of Goans for Xit-Koddi, we caught up with Seby D'Souza, who has spent almost his entire life in Bahrain.
Seby is the son of late Francisco Inacio and late Liberata D'Souza from Calvim, Aldona, Goa. His father Francisco, who was a long serving employee of Bapco in the 1940's, was one of the founder members of the Young Goans Sports Club. The family rendered their supportive services to many institutions in those days, including the Sacred Heart Church, the St. Barths Club and to the Goan community members. His sister, Susan Alfonso is also actively involved in social and religious services in Bahrain. In the family of 4 brothers and 4 sisters is also a priest, Fr. Benedict serving in Germany.
Seby studied at the Sacred Heart School until 1957 and later moved to St. Britto's Mapusa, to complete his education. He was back in Bahrain in 1966 assisting his parents in their family business and later joined the Coca-Cola company in 1969. He soon got a job at Seven-Up company and worked there till 1997. Presently employed with Pepsi, he intends to bid good-bye to Bahrain by the end of this year. Having been in social circles in Bahrain, Seby chose his soulmate in Bahrain itself and got married to Villa in 1974. It was a love marriage, and love continues till today he says with a million dollar smile on his face. Villa D'Souza had a long stint with Panalpina on the employment scene.
Seby, holding life membership with the Young Goans Club, has served on the committee of this only Goan registered institution in Bahrain for a record number of 17 terms. He has been a committee member initially, climbing upto indoor sports secretary and served as treasurer for the
highest number of terms than any other member. 'It was a pride during the glory days of the club to be a part of social and charitable works among our community', he says recollecting the glamorous events hosted by the club in the past. He continues to support the club activities till today, and was rightly honoured by the the club at a very recent get-together at the club premises. On his plans after leaving Bahrain, he said 'I should be shuttling between Goa and Australia, where my son Aaron is settled with his family'. On a parting note, he appealed to the Goans on the island to be united and to keep the YGC flag flying HIGH always.
ADS - All Dedicated Services: A group of people, mainly from Goa gathered together in a spirit of friendship and understanding under the Chairmanship of Agnelo Da Silva Sr. (Sanquelim) in 1978 to form a social group called ADS - All Dedicated Services. The motto of this group was to practice the ideal of service to others. The group used to organise many social events in Bahrain and the prominent among them were the Bandra Fair and the Goa Day. Football tournaments, picnics, social outings with sporting competitions were other events they would indulge in. ADS had a very strong and popular football team lead by Raul Rodrigues (Benaulim). The non-profit making group would donate any gains from their events to charities. ADS lasted for over 10 years and disintegrated with the departure of their founder Agnelo Da Silva from Bahrain. Some of the prominent members of this group were late Gaby Fernandes, Osvi Viegas (tiatrist), Meena Dias (ex-Indian embassy employee), Freddie Fernandes, Santosh Shetty, Alice Miranda and Santosh Pai.
(Request to our readers: If you know of any past Goan groups, let us know to publish them here.)
Indian Expatriate Football League: The Bahrain Goans are leading a team of enthusiactic footballers in conducting the first ever Indian Expatriate Football League in Bahrain. With 10 teams in the fray, the league got underway on November 21. Navelim Union, Majorda Youth, Aldona United, Panjim Footballers, SS Nuvem, Riffa Goans Club and Synergy United are the seven teams particpating in the league, under Goan management. BFC Kerala United, Marina Club and AMT Bahrain are the other teams in this 11-a-side league. Players from Goa, Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab and Karnataka are seen in action every Friday. The matches kick-off at 2 p.m at the Al Qadisiya grounds in Salmaniya. The league is sponsored by Sky Stars Electricals.
Best Goalkeeper: Clifford Correia (seen in picture), scooped the best goalkeeper award in the 2nd Bahrain 6s Field Hockey tournament organised by Bahrain Hockey Association. Clifford lead the Royal Challengers team in the tournament played at St. Christopher's School in Saar on November 18. Royal Challengers bagged the Fair Play trophy in the tournament, which was eventually won by Dadabhai Travel. Hungry Hamours and Daredevils were the other two teams who participated in the tournament sponsored by Gulf Agency Company and Dadabhai Travel.
