At the time of Goa’s accession to India, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had categorically assured Goans that Goa would retain its distinct identity. However, following the victory of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) in the first election for the Goa Assembly in 1963, the MGP raised the pitch and called for merger of Goa into Maharashtra. MGP wanted to have a vote on merger in the Goa Assembly, where they had a majority.
It was Dr. Jack Sequeira, then leader of the Opposition, who vehemently opposed this move. He worked tirelessly to garner support from allies for an opinion poll and it was when Indira Gandhi was Prime Minister that Parliament agreed to a referendum by secret ballot. The historic opinion poll was held on 16 January 1967. The proposal for merger was defeated by 34,021 votes.
Today Goa is Goa because of the selfless sacrifices of true-blooded Goans, egged on by the indomitable spirit and leadership of Dr. Jack Sequeira. Else, Goa would be a district of Maharashtra and our Official Language would be Marathi.
On his birth centenary (April 20, 2015), Xit-Koddi salutes this great son of Goa, Dr. Jack Sequeira, popularly known as the Father of the Opinion Poll. Let all Goans, likewise, resolve to resist any future attempts to diminish in any way the integrity and special identity of Goa.

her long service in the medical profession by the Janatha Cultural Centre at the Indian Club on April 10. Francisca arrived in Bahrain in the year 1984, and worked at the Bahrain Defence Force hospital for one and half years before joining Salmaniya Medical Centre (SMC) as a Senior Staff Nurse. She later moved to the maternity division of SMC as Midwife, where she continues to work till today. A well-known warm and friendly member of our Community, she is well appreciated by our Goans visiting SMC for her assistance of care and concern. She was among the 10 nurses honored by the association for over 25 years of service. She was presented with a certificate, medal and a memento.
Francisca, a qualified nurse from the Goa Medical College, worked with Hospicio Margao, before joining her husband Gabriel Mascarenhas in Bahrain. She comes from Vaddem, Sanguem, Goa, and lives with her two sons, Floyd and Fletcher, in Bahrain. The Xit-Koddi team congratulates Francisca on this recognition.
Chic Baylon Da Cruz was featured in our Xit-Koddi issue of September 2013, as a little star of
Goa in Bahrain. We are proud to highlight this little star once again as he was recognized as the Youngest Event Organizer in Bahrain. He achieved this feat by being part of the organizing team of the annual Youth Musical Festival on April 10 at the Hotspot Restaurant in Adliya. The festival featured several DJ’s and a Battle of the Bands competition for youngsters. Over 200 youngsters attended this event. The new elected young and energetic committee of the YGC for the year 2015 was installed at a well attended Easter Dinner Dance on April 9, at the Sea Shell Hotel in Adliya. The live band ‘Expats’ and DJ Philip played scintillating music and kept the young and old on the dance floor throughout the night. The arrangements for the children in a separate arena were well appreciated by everyone. The kids were kept busy with children’s movies, and Easter Eggs were distributed to them. President-elect Noel Fernandes welcomed the gathering and led the new committee in cutting the cake. Earlier Cyndi Crasto introduced the new committee, while the new assistant entertainment secretary, Kevin D’Cunha, hosted the rest of the evening with witty compering. Outgoing President Francis Correia, led the gathering for the dinner with a prayer before the meal. The new committee has launched a membership drive and the large turn-out at the event was a sign of club membership on the rise, and with the committee rolling out a calendar of events for the year, more members are expected to join this second oldest club in Bahrain in the coming days.
A MASK-Querade Ball on May 21 and a traditional Goan San Joao celebrations on June 12 are the immediate programs scheduled by the committee. More details of these programs will be announced soon. The Club has also invited hockey, football and cricket players on the island to contact the committee with a view to organize sporting events under the club banner. Colva Salcette United emerged champions in the 9-A-Side Goan Inter Village Football League that concluded at the Riffa Grounds on April 17. In an exciting final day of matches, Assagao Sporting, needing an outright win for the championship, were heading for the crown with one goal against Colva, scored by Lawrence Peixote. However, two minutes from time, a powerful drive from Gavin Dourado deflected off a defender and sailed into the Assagao net, sending Colva supporters into celebrations, as a draw was just enough for them to seal the title. Assagao had their fortunes overturned, when in a later match Cansaulim defeated Majorda and displaced them from the runners-up position to third place. Meanwhile Peter Britto scored a hatrick in a 7 - 1 win of Vagator against bottom-placed Dabal, and scooped the top scorer of the league trophy with a tally of 5 goals to his credit. Vagator were placed 4th on the league table with this win. Besides the prizes for the participating teams, Evans Sequeira (Vagator) and Fraser Antao (Cansaulim) were awarded prizes for best goalkeeper and best defender of the league. The league in memory of Peter (Pedro) Pereira was organized by Sirsaim Sports Club and conducted and managed by Bahrain Goans.
Meanwhile Salcette United are organizing an 8-A-Side football tournament on May 1. The day long tournament is open to Indian Expatriate teams and will kick-off at Al Ahli Club grounds, Zing at 8 a.m. The organizers can be contacted on mobile nos. 33337736 or 33602403 for more details about this football event.
