My Visit To Goa
I took a short holiday to Goa in January. The topics of discussion among Goans around this time were on installing statue of Dr. Jack Sequeira-Father of Opinion Poll, at the Goa Assembly complex. Every nook and corner of Goa, people were heard giving their opinions on the subject. Social media too, was abuzz with comments for and against the proposition. Certain views were even bad for the unity of Goans. I pondered over all this. Was this subject that important ?
From my perspective, I felt that this was a ploy of our politicians to divert the attention of Goans from more serious issues that are at hand. During my visit to Goa, I found that hawkers and beggars are all over in the main streets of Goa, harassing every passer-by. Tourism in Goa is come in all shapes and sizes. Tourist groups are seen cooking, eating and sleeping on footpaths. Garbage continues to find roadsides as dumping ground.
Rather than falling to the ill-intents of our politicians to divide the people on installing statues, Goans need to fight for removal of these beggars, hawkers and footpath tourists to maintain a clean image of Goa. Let us voice our concern on such issues.

The expatriate community of Bahrain never feels away from home with freedom to celebrate their cultural and religious festivals. March 2, witnessed one such celebration and that was 'Holi Rangotsav', the festival of colours. Hundreds of people gathered for the celebration held at the Shri Krishna (Hindu) Temple, Manama, turning the place into an explosion of colours as the festival rolled on with revellers dousing their near and dear ones with colours. Esco & Family To Bid Goodbye To Bahrain.
'It’s hard to leave Bahrain, because it’s a wonderful model of tolerance, co-existence, solidarity and love’, said Esco Antao,
who has decided to leave Bahrain after 20 years of employment on this island of golden smiles.
Esco comes from Rivona, a small village of Sanguem Taluka famous for refreshing springs and verdant beauty. He arrived in Bahrain in the year 1998 and has worked with Nass Company since then. Rena, his wife joined him in Bahrain in the year 2004, two years after their marriage. A professional beautician, Rena has been making people look good and great through her services at the Head To Toe Beauty Saloon in Zinj. The couple is blessed with two sons Shawn and Skyler, who are students of New Horizon School in grade 1 and 5 respectively.
Esco, who loves football, has always patronized football activities of Goans in Bahrain. In gratitude the All Goa Goans, held an exhibition match as a farewell to Esco and his family on February 16, at the Al Nojoom grounds behind Dasman Centre in Gudaibiya. A cake cutting ceremony was held at the grounds on the day to mark 7th birthday of his son Skyler, who is fond of football like his father.
‘Probably, Easter will be our last festivity in Bahrain, before our departure for good’, Esco told Xit-Koddi. ‘I wish to see the Bahrain Goans continue to live in unity and promote our culture and language in this foreign land’, said Esco, as his parting message to our community here.
Esco with his family is considering opportunities in United Kingdom, though they will travel to Goa for now. We wish Esco, Rena and their two boys a happy and pleasant settlement in a place of their heart’s desire.

“I have good news and bad news for you,” the priest announced at the end of service at a small industrial town church.
“We are going to build a new church in this area,” he said.
The congregation listened in awe.
“And the good news is,” he continued, “we have the money to build the new church.”
Everyone’s eyes lighted up to hear the priest.
“The bad news is, the money is in your pockets,” he told the parishioners looking around. Most faces had instantly lost their sparkle.
Later, I had the opportunity to meet the priest and learn about his plan of building the new church. His proposal was to have a large community hall, offices, meeting rooms and a few residential rooms as well.
I also understood that the parish did not have necessary finances to take up the project. As such, the priest had in mind several ideas and programs to raise funds including donations from parishioners.
I could not help but cast a few questions to the priest about his proposition.“The existing church is convenient and is suitably accommodating all devotees, then why should we go for a new church when we don’t have required funds,” was my first question.
The priest showed me a new, luxuriously built villa next to the church compound.
“The owners of this villa had a small ancestral house there,” he explained, “they have demolished the old house and built this luxurious villa after taking loan from the bank.”
I listened to the priest as he went on to enlighten me further.
“If people can take loan to build deluxe houses despite having a home, what is wrong in making God’s house a better place by way of donations from his own people. What is your next concern,” the priest asked me.
“I do agree with you, father,” I said. “We must make God’s house a better place, but why do we need so many rooms and offices?” I inquired.
The priest took me to another large house nearby which had several rooms. A large family stayed there, each had their own bedroom. The entrance, the living and dining rooms were huge besides a playroom for smaller kids. The children had a study-room attached to their bedrooms; the house also had two guest rooms.
“If we can have private houses like this, what is wrong in having a comfortable house for the people of God?” the priest asked.
“Father, how many times in a year, do we have visitors to our church to make provisions for so many rooms,” I inquired further, not being fully convinced.
This time, the priest led me to yet another huge house. We met an elderly lady there, she was a caretaker. Most rooms of the house were locked.
“The owners are all working abroad,” the priest explained. “They visit their home once a year for 10 to 15 days as and when they get holidays but still they maintain the house, which remains locked most of the year round.”
“Hmm..” I listened.
“So tell me, if people can build houses and keep them locked year round, what is wrong in having some additional rooms at the house of God for visiting priests and religious leaders,” the priest questioned me.
I still had my displeasure towards the proposed church. After all it was people’s money, our money. In all my negative thoughts I could hear the church choir singing far away like angels.
“This is an industrial town,” I said, “we are all immigrants here. Someday, we will head back to our homes. Then what happens to this large religious complex that you build, father?”
“I have shown you three houses,” the priest clarified. “All of the owners are not immortal. Some day they too, will leave this world, and then what will happen to the beautiful houses and villas that they have built?”
“Aiz kamank vochnam re?” (‘Are you not going to work today?’) a sweet voice startled me up from my mystic dream. It was my wife.
Within the shelter of my bed I woke up and sat upright recalling the events of the night before. Serenade of the angels still played a distant echo in my ears.
