What A Mother Means…....
Like many children, I would describe my mother as the best in the world, and I couldn’t ask for anyone better. She has given me unconditional love.

You grow up, and only then do you realize what a ‘mother’ means in your life. You begin to understand what a blessing your mother is to you, and how important it is to tell her that. But the only problem is, sometimes you don’t get that chance. For a pretty long time now, I wanted to tell my mother how much I appreciate the sacrifices she made for me, and thank her for guiding and supporting me in realizing my dreams. The opportunity came, as I joined my brother and sister, along with our families, to celebrate the 75th birthday of our mother, Mariani Crasto, on the 9th of this month. My mother was touched, and tears of joy filled her eyes.
To my beloved mother, who has sacrificed and devoted her life to put me where I stand today, I dedicate this issue of Xit-Koddi.
I know of parents who are distressed and humiliated by their children. I hope this small tribute to my mother will inspire children of such parents.
With love to all mothers.

His Inspirational Quotes
"Each of us has a vision of good and of evil. We have to encourage people to move towards what they think is good... Everyone has his own idea of good and evil and must choose to follow the good and fight evil as he conceives them. That would be enough to make the world a better place."
Historic Visit To India By Our King
Through this issue of Xit-Koddi, we extend our best wishes to His Majesty King Hamad of Bahrain on his historic visit to India. With the landmark talks and key business deals that will take place during his visit, a strengthened relationship with Bahrain and India is envisioned.
May it also bring some benefits to the large number of Indians employed in this country.

Protection of Properties of NRI's In Goa: Lately, there have been instances where landed properties owned by some NRIs and PIOs of Goan origin have been usurped in their absence by unscrupulous elements by manipulating land records and executing fraudulent sale deeds. Against this background, the State government is seriously contemplating enactment of suitable legislation whereby the Government would offer to protect the landed properties of interested NRIs and PIOs of Goan origin. For this purpose, it is proposed to create a data bank of all landed properties of NRIs and PIOs of Goan origin who are willing to register their properties with the Government. This will enable the Registration Authorities to prevent manipulation of such land records and execution of fraudulent sale deeds. Those willing to register their landed properties (other than flats and shops) with the Government, the details of such property records with copies of Form I & XIV etc., may be forwarded to the Commissioner for NRI Affairs latest by 31st March 2014. This was announced through an email addressed to us by U.D. Kamat, Director of NRI Affairs, Goa.
Declaration of Indian Currency on Arrival in India: The new Customs rules under Customs Baggage Declaration (Amendment) Regulations, 2014, will be applicable from March 1, 2014. Under these new rules, passengers entering India will have to declare Indian currency exceeding Rs. 10,000 being brought by them. All passengers coming to India will be filling up a new 'Indian Customs Declaration Form,' which will seek details that will be different from the detachable perforated strip which is a part of the immigration card at the moment. Travelers would be asked to specifically
declare in the new form, any prohibited articles, gold jewelry (over the free allowance), gold bullion and Indian currency exceeding Rs. 10,000. According to the new rules, an Indian citizen would need to fill up the immigration form only when he or she goes out of the country. There will be no immigration form for Indian citizens returning from abroad. This information is contained in a notification issued by Ministry of Finance on February 10, 2014.

Padma Awards To Goans.: Three internationally renowned Goan personalities, scientist Raghunath Mashelkar, tennis star Leander Paes and fashion designer Wendell Rodricks, featured in the list of Padma awards announced on Republic Day this year.
Mashelkar of Marcel, is the former Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). He was the chairperson of the Goa golden jubilee development council that prepared the Goa Vision Document 2035.
Wendell Rodricks, who is credited with putting Goa on the fashion map is celebrated for his minimalist style that blends ancient Indian geometry with the relaxed Goan attitude. Hailing from Colvale village in North Goa, Rodricks was the first Indian fashion designer invited to display his creations at the world's largest garment fair in 1995, at IGEDO, Dusseldorf, Germany.
Goa-born Leander Paes is an Indian professional tennis player who features in the doubles events in the ATP Tour and the Davis Cup tournament. Having won eight doubles and six mixed doubles Grand Slam titles and finishing as runner-up in numerous other Grand Slam finals, he is considered to be one of the greatest contemporary doubles and mixed doubles players in the world.
On behalf of Bahrain Goans, Xit-Koddi congratulate them on this recognition.

Xit-Koddi SPECIAL:
A Goan Wedding In Bahrain.
Utor, Engagement, Saddo, Civil Registration, Banns, Chuddo, Bikaream Jevonn, Dennem, Roce, Wedding, Xim, Mhuino, Ojem were some of the wedding traditions and customs that were observed in Goa in the past. These age-old traditions are fading today, thanks to the modernization of our society. However, there are still Goans, who simply love and enjoy going through the whole chain of traditional ceremonies of a wedding.
It was January 2014. Our family friend Norita Alphonso got married to Savio D’Souza in Bahrain. It was the bride’s mother, Suzana Alphonso, who made it a point to follow some of these traditional Goan wedding customs, and to project them to a cross-section of society. The wedding of Norita and Savio gives Xit-Koddi an opportunity to highlight some of these Goan wedding traditions, and reflect on their significance. Chuddo: On the day of the first bans, the bride is invited to the house of her maternal uncle for lunch. She is made to wear the chuddo. This is a special ceremony where the kakonkar (bangle-seller) comes to the house and fits bangles on the hand of the flower-bedecked bride in the presence of other women. It is said that no bangles should be broken, and as such the bride was not expected to do any work until her wedding day. Roce (Ros): The first coconut milk called apros is used for the ceremony. A day before the wedding, the bride and the groom, each at their respective houses, are made to sit in the main hall. Relatives and neighbors are invited over to apply the ros. It is applied to different parts of the body, starting with the head and then to the limbs. The parents do it first, followed by close relatives, neighbors and friends. Ros is a farewell to the single life, and is probably a symbol of purification. It is believed in some quarters that the Portuguese introduced Ros as a substitute to the Hindu ‘Haldi’ ceremony. In the olden days when cosmetics were not available, the family members would beautify the bride and groom by applying a paste of turmeric (Haldi) on their face, hands and feet. The turmeric applied is known to improve one's complexion. The present generation has completely changed the nature of ros. For this ceremony nowadays youngsters are seen using eggs, juice, creams, custard, toothpaste and what not, to create an atmosphere of merriment. Mhuino: The next day of the wedding, the couple go to the bride's house, for a reception called the Mhuino. The bridal couple is welcomed by the bride's mother, then taken directly to the altar where they have to kneel down for a short prayer. The groom has to place some money under the cushion. This money is taken by the servant of the bride's house. According to tradition, the couple has to have five meals at the bride's house.
Xit-Koddi thanks Norita & Savio, for granting their approval to use pictures of their wedding ceremonies for reflecting on these age old Goan traditions and wish them a long and happy married life.
Seven-A-Side Football: A one-day seven-a-side football tournament is scheduled for March 7, at the Al Nojoom ground in Gudaibiya, next to Dasman Centre. The tournament is open to Goan inter-village teams. Nuvem, Guirim, Curtorim, Fatorda, Majorda, Tivim, Goa Velha and Baina have so far confirmed their participation. The tournament is held under the banner of Sirsaim Sports Club, Tivim, in memory of the late Peter (Pedro) Pereira. The kick-off is at 9 a.m. For more details contact mobile 39672776.
