Unity in Diversity The month of July ended with Muslims celebrating Eid-Al-Fitr. August saw Catholics celebrating the feast of Our Lady of Assumption. Ganesh Chaturthi, one of the great festivals of Hindus, falls at the end of this month. People with different views on life, religion, social and cultural systems unite and celebrate Indian Independence Day on August 15. This is unity in the diversity of India.
However, there are selfish, uncultured people who keep trying to destroy this unity. We at Xit-Koddi, look at ‘One God’ through these festivities of different religions, and wish every Indian and our readers in particular, the joy and happiness of these celebrations.
Cheers !

Konkani Play: Mog Khuim Chuklom, a one-act Konkani play directed by comedian Jr. Anthony Luis, will form part of the cultural program to mark the ‘Harvest Festival’ of the Konkani community of the Sacred Heart Church (KCSHC). The program will be held soon after the Feast Mass at 10 a.m. on September 5 at the Our Lady of Arabia auditorium. Meena Fernandes, who was felicitated by our e-newsletter as the best actor in the tiatr Konnakuch Khobor Nam in May 2013, will be the main actor in this play. This is an annual celebration of the KCSHC.
Tribute To Alfred Rose: A one-hour program of the songs of Alfred Rose will form part of the Bandra Fair festivities to be organized by the Young Goans Club (YGC) on September 12. The one-hour slot is titled ‘Tribute to Alfred Rose’. The YGC is gearing up to hold the traditional, cultural ‘Bandra Fair’ at the Baan Saeng Thai Restaurant from 12 noon to 10 p.m. The initial meeting of the organizing committee has lined up a long list of exciting and entertaining activities for all, with food stalls of traditional delicacies and a variety of games. Other stage programs like group dancing competitions and cultural dances, will also be featured. A DJ will be in attendance. More details of this event will be released soon.
Ashwin Pinto (Bahrain): It is good to see the community becoming more and more vibrant. As we are all aware this year there will be the exposition of the body of our beloved St. Francis Xavier. It would be of great help to all Goans if some of our community leaders or those having experience and contacts, can organize a trip to Goa around the time of Christmas. Most Goans are planning to go for the exposition. So if we can have a few direct flights or tickets on a group discount it would help us all.

OBITUARIES
Xit-Koddi Team deeply mourns the death of following resident/ex-residents of Bahrain and convey our deepest condolences to their families.
Christley Camilo Pereira:
If we fail to identify gifted and talented children, we risk not encouraging these children to fly and add value to society through their exceptional abilities. At Xit-Koddi, we are proud to highlight such children from the Goan community of Bahrain. Twelve-year-old Christley Camilo Pereira is our little star of this month. Christley, crowned Chess Champion in the under 16 category of the competition held to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Sacred Heart Church, amazed even the senior players with his aggressive moves on the chess board. His victory in this competition leads us to unearth his great talents in several other fields as well.
His achievements in chess have been commendable. He won his first chess medal in 2012 earning the top spot in the under-12 group of the competition organized by the Bahrain Chess Academy. Last year, Christley won the Junior Championship of the Bahrain Chess Club. Among the many medals and trophies he has won in chess, is also the runners-up trophy at the Bahrain Open Chess Championship organized by the Bahrain Mind Sports Association. Cibeola, who has appeared in this column in October 2013, is Christley’s sister, and he proudly says that he has learnt chess with her help.

Re-imaging Goa Through Tourism: Amchem Goem called the 'Rome of The East' and 'Pearl of the Orient' is rapidly losing its shine with several issues tarnishing its image. Tourism is one of them. The Centre For Responsible Tourism has made an informative video which talks to all stakeholders, including ordinary men and women, who are not involved in tourism, but are affected by it. Wendell Rodricks, Clinton Vaz and others speak about possible solutions of 'Re-imaging Goa Through Tourism' in this video. We bring the link of this video to our readers:

Xit-Koddi stumbled upon a simple and quiet personality in the Goan Community, only to learn that he has featured in the list of the outstanding employees in the private sector honoured by the Labour Minister of Bahrain. He is Leslie D’Souza.
resident of Bahrain from 1980 until 2010. It was an enjoyable stay. My husband Benny, continues to work with YBA Kanoo in Bahrain. I have strong and good memories of all the good friends and the local people. I was fortunate to bring up my kids in Bahrain and they are well settled now. I love the place and have seen its development and advancement into the present era over three decades. Bahrain was second home for us and I never felt lonely or missed home and family ever. God Bless Bahrain and its people.
Generally the award is given to Bahrainis in recognition of their service, and Leslie is the second Goan (Indian) to achieve this feat. Labour Minister Jameel Humaidan of Bahrain presented the awards to mark Labour Day, at a function organized by the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions at Crowne Plaza in May, this year. The honor carries a citation and a cash award.
Leslie has been working with Awal Plastics, since his arrival in Bahrain in 1980. He joined the company in a technical trade position and climbed up the ladder of success with his hard work and dedication. His honesty and contribution to the company propelled him to a position in Sales for the last ten years. During his tenure as a technical person for almost 25 years, he has been named ‘Employee of the Month’ more than once, and in 1991, Leslie was recognized as ‘Best Employee Of The Year’.
Smiling Priest No More: Fr. John Van Deerlin passed away in his hometown of San Diego, California, on August 13. He was struggling with severe cancer since February of this year. Fr. John, incardinated priest of the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia, served as assistant priest at the Sacred Heart Church, Bahrain, from 1984 to 1986, and again for a short spell in 1988-89. Fr. John, who has served different parishes in the vicariate, is best remembered as Parish Priest for 13 years of Doha, Qatar parish since 1989. May his soul rest in peace.

Admin: Today is India’s Independence Day. Many children will attend the flag-hoisting ceremony at their schools. And many other children will celebrate this day like this girl, thinking that this day is a good opportunity to sell Indian flags, not knowing the meaning of Independence nor having had any opportunity to sit at a school bench. 68 years of Indian Independence. Jai Hind !
Comment A: Absolutely true. Sarkem boroilam tuven Crasto bab !!!!
Comment B: Absolutely right Crasto, this is the poristhiti of our government known for saying ache din anne wale hai.
Comment C: Everyone is correct, but we are only talking. Can someone come forward to help children like this child ? I still remember a line by Nana Patekar in a Hindi movie, Sau Main se Ninyanvey Beimaan, phir bhi Mera Bharat Mahan.
Admin: Replies To Comment C : Not Exactly, Sir. On this Independence Day, I salute thousands of Indians who lend a helping hand for the uplift of poor children like this one. Examples are Give India, Help and Educate Poor Children in India, Ramabhai Mukti Mission, Don Bosco’s, Pilar Fathers - the list is long. These NGO’s help educate and bring up the poor. These institutions are run with the support and contributions from thousands of Indians (common man) living in India and outside. But the problem in India is our politicians. They will not allow faster growth of the poor. Some States even prohibit such institutions on their land. There is also another side to this story. There are parents of children like this, who will not send their children to school but will send them to beg on the streets and live on them.
Follow Up By Commentator C : You are very correct Crasto Bab, about NGO's and some parents living on their children. I have experienced both. However, my personal experience about some NGO's, with whom I have been associated during my community service, is very bad, especially with an NGO, that was run by a very important politician.
Comment D: Is this in Goa?
Comment E: This is in Miramar. One of the youngest members of the Campal parade ground colony. Begging outside city restaurants is also their profession.
Comment F: Send them back by not patronizing them. Organized begging is a racket in Panjim. They are dropped at various locations from 5 a.m. until 9 p.m. Please do not buy anything from them or give them money or food. You are only feeding the business of begging and slowly allowing them to destroy our Goa.
Comment G: We did a program on FM Radio once, and raised awareness about not supporting beggars in Miramar and after 5 minutes we had a caller threatening the station staff to stop broadcasting immediately.
Comment H: Yehi Hai India !
Admin: Picture of this innocent child depicts many facets of India - Jai Ho!

A story on two Goan sisters murdered in Kuwait had sent shock waves among the Goans in Goa as well as in the Gulf. The news had also appeared in one of the newspapers in Goa. Xit-Koddi attempted to get details of this story through our contacts with Community leaders in Kuwait. However, no one could confirm or deny the story. As we were about to release this issue of Xit-Koddi, the below news has come in through IndiansinKuwait.com, which we would like to share with our readers:"Forty percent news reports published in newspapers today are bogus, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the Goa assembly on Wednesday.
Parrikar told the ongoing monsoon session of the Goa assembly that media reporting standards had slipped considerably, even reading out a list of news reports, which he claimed eventually turned out to be "bogus".
"Ten years ago, 80 percent stories used to be right," he said.
"Today, 40 percent (news reports) are true, 20 percent are borderline and 40 percent are bogus," the chief minister said.
He read out a news report published in a paper about two sisters of Goan origin being murdered in Kuwait by their employer, which he said was a hoax.
"I asked Kuwait (embassy) and Interpol. I got a report saying it is bogus," Parrikar said.
Two months back the story was widely spread as, a Goan housemaid was killed by her employer in Salwa and her sister also died after seeing the body. IndiansinKuwait.com also tried to verify the story but couldn't find any facts related to the story. Indian Embassy in Kuwait also denied about any reported death of Goan ladies."
The United Goan Ladies Squads had a glittering prize distribution ceremony at the Baan Saeng Thai Restaurant in Adliya on July 31. The event was to honor the football players, who participated in the 7-A-Side football tournament held in June 2014. This was the first football tournament organized by Goan Ladies in Bahrain, where six teams participated. The organizers are seen in the picture (from left to right) Leena Ferns, Dianna Sequeira, Shivona Godinho, Succurine Rodrigues, Mona Ferrao and Mildred Gonsalves, all set to present the winners trophy to 'Rodrigues - The Chillers'. The Crossroads band was in attendance in addition to DJ Joelton. Vincent D'Costa also entertained the crowd with some 'solo' numbers in English and Konkani. Several games and spots prizes were featured during the evening function, attended by a crowd of over 100.
The Goan Footballers enjoyed the Eid Holidays from the afternoon of the second day till the early morning of the third day. They were playing in the 8-A-Side football tournament organized by Milagres Boys as a farewell to Allan Sequeira, who leaves the island for good by next month. Davorlim Sporting won the tournament without conceding a single goal in the tournament. They won the finals via a penalty shoot-out against Tivim. Favorites Panjim bowed out in the semis. Rivona and Vasco were the other teams that participated in the tournament. Davorlim are seen in the picture with their trophies. The tournament was played on the astro turf grounds of Al Ahli Club in Zinj.
Areal Sporting won the Independence Cup mini-lightning 7-A-Side football tournament played at the Al Nojoom grounds in Gudaibiya on August 15. They defeated Chandor 2 -1 in the finals via the tiebreaker. Candolim got the better of Assnora with a solitary goal victory to clinch the third place. Dabal and Cortalim had to resort to a long penalty shoot-out in the plate finals with the latter breaking the deadlock at 12-11. Other prizes that were given at the end of the day were for highest scorer (Peter Britto of Chandor), best player (Sanchez Dias of Areal), best defender (Inacio Vales of Chandor), best goalkeeper (Joshua Rodrigues of Cortalim) and goal of the tournament (Bruno Fernandes of Assnora). The tournament was organized by Riffa Goans.
