A Statue of Unity.
Construction of a statute of unity at an estimated cost of USD 480 million has started in Gujarat, India. The statue of Sardar Patel will be twice the height of the Statue of Liberty in the USA and five times taller than the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Indian politicians for their selfish gains, divide our country on lines of religion, caste, creed and region. India today is in turmoil with riots, rapes, murders, communal violence, corruption, states being fragmented to make new states, and yet our politicians are proud to say: "We will have a statue of unity".
We at Xit-Koddi, wish our leaders would spend this huge amount on basic amenities such as infrastructure, sanitation or education which our country needs more than a statute of unity.

OBITUARIES
Ex-resident Minister in Goa: In the 1980s, Micky Pacheco sported long hair, often tied in a ponytail, with a cross dangling from his left earlobe. Clad in a T-shirt and jeans, he would often be seen riding a motorbike in Bahrain. He loved football and played as goalkeeper for the now defunct United Goans football team in Bahrain. On his return to Goa after a short stint in Europe and US he entered politics and has been in the government several times. The lone member of the Goa Vikas Party, Micky has been inducted into the BJP Government of Goa as Rural Development Minister. Xit-Koddi extends best wishes to Micky Pacheco, a former resident of Bahrain.
Diana Fernandes (Goa): Congratulations on completing four years of your newsletter. Secondly, thank you for the monthly updates on the Xit-Koddi Bahrain Goans e-newsletter. It's nice to keep updated with what's happening in Bahrain, even though I'm not there anymore. I particularly enjoyed reading the special feature on Fr. Felicio Diniz. Incidentally he was present when I received the sacraments of baptism, communion as well as confirmation. We have this running comment in the family, that he should be the priest I should go to when I decide to get married!
Jose Alexander (Bahrain): Congratulations to the Xit-Koddi team on completing 4 years. Your anniversary issue covered more of Christian religious news and looked like a religious bulletin. There are activities of several other religions in Bahrain which Xit-Koddi must also cover. (Editor’s note: We keep appealing to our readers to bring any news, reports that are related to Bahrain Goans to our attention and we will surely make space for them in our Xit-Koddi, irrespective of any religion.)

Seby Fernandes (Paklo). In 1980 a
Walter and Elizabeth J. Pires (London-U.K.): We came
prominent footballer from Century Rayon, Bombay, arrived in Bahrain, and made a lasting impression on the football scene. He is Seby Fernandes, well known as 'Paklo' among the Goan community here. He will be leaving the island shortly for good.
Always young-looking and handsome, Seby arrived in Bahrain, just two years after his marriage to Alice. He is returning to India with fond memories of his long stay here. 'It’s amazing how time flies ... It looks like only a few years back that I arrived in Bahrain, and my wife and I are now retuning to India as grandparents’, Seby told Xit-Koddi. A committed and dedicated employee, he had been working for Mechanical Contracting and Services Co. for the last 34 years.
Seby hails from the touristic village of Colva, but has lived in Bombay for most of the time before coming to Bahrain. He represented Maharashtra twice in the Jr. National Football championship, and was a member of the Bombay Goans Football team that used to tour and participate in football tournaments in Goa in the late 1970’s. He was the most sought-after player on arrival in Bahrain, and though it was tough competition to get into the Goans Football team in those years, Seby was quick to find a place in the YGC team and played several years in the then most popular Hempels Expatriate Football league. He also played for a couple years for the British Club. Seby was also a good hockey player and represented the YGC in the Bahrain Hockey Association league. He has also played football for United Goans and ADS teams in Indian tournaments and in friendly matches. Winner of several prizes, he is on the honors list of Bahrain Goans, and was very recently felicitated by the Indian Club.
to live here in the mid-1970s and had 22 wonderful years on the island before we relocated to London. I still visit frequently. There was a very large Goan community who lived in the vicinity of Sacred Heart Church. The church, of course, was at the center of the community, closely followed by the Goans Club with Barts Club (in the church) also providing another venue for gatherings. Goans were respected and trusted. Whether it was at the Royal Palace, or in the firms on the island, they worked in many capacities and at all levels.
There were several Goans in prominent positions who made an effort to help the members of the community when they first arrived on the island trying to make their way up. Many an Al Khalifa of today was looked after by a Goan nanny. Walking down the street in Manama, you would easily run into at least ten Goans you knew. Village ties were strong and the annual Mass for the patron saint of one’s village and a get-together afterwards was a highlight for many families. This only proves the point that you can take the Goan out of his village but you cannot take his village out of him!
Christmas and New year were particularly fun…with the lilt of carols spilling out from homes, traditional Goan sweets made by the ladies, and the dances that went on until the early hours....And in the cooler weather the picnics on Jazayer Beach with singing and dancing whilst the guitars played. Those were the days !!!!!
Evander Darius Sequeira. The Indian
School, Bahrain organized a Youth Festival and several competitions were held for children during this month. Xit-Koddi caught up with Evander Darius Sequeira who walked away with a couple of trophies.Evander won the first prize for short play, and was in third place in the poem-writing competitions held during this festival. Evander, son of Edward and Electra Sequeira from Vasco-da-Gama, has appeared in the Xit-Koddi issue of June 2014 for securing top marks at the SSC examination of 2014. We are proud to congratulate our little star Evander and wish him continued success.

‘Bahrain is like my home, and I should be visiting Bahrain often as my children are here’, he said at the end of our chat with him. His elder daughter, Melissa (married to Pascal), son, Niven (married to Sheryl), and the youngest son, Lynford, are working in Bahrain. Seby and Alice are seen here with Kaitlyn, their grand-daughter.
Asked about his advice to present day footballers in Bahrain, he said, ‘Football is not just watching the game on TV and imitating the style of top players. It needs a lot of practice, building up of stamina, and coordination with team members’. Xit-Koddi wishes Seby and Alice a happy and pleasant future, back home in India.
...… that the Indian Tourism Ministry is partially funding the Exposition of St. Francis Xavier, which is expected to draw at least five million visitors, including a sizeable number of foreign followers of the Catholic saint?

'Goenchi Sanz' organised by CRAB (Claude, Roque, Alvito & Benny) Entertainment enthralled a house full crowd at the Papillon Restaurant on November 6. The evening featured all Goan entertainment of song and cultural dances. Among the cultural items and dances was a 'Mando' presentation lead by Menino Fernandes, besides songs by Danby D'Costa, Jr. Luis, Quixote and Ophelia. Manuel Fernandes recited a couple of Konkani poems. DJ Lucio Noronha provided music for the event.
The highlight of the event was felicitation of eight Goans on the island for their contribution in various fields related to Goan identity and culture. They were presented with mementos and certificates. Though the awards were supported by our e-newsletter Xit-Koddi, the selection of candidates was the sole choice of the organizers ‘CRAB Entertainment’. Xit-Koddi has highlighted these Goans in past issues; however we are pleased to highlight their achievements, once again.

Our Goenkar Pedru replied immediately, 'Claude, Rocky, Alvito and Bonny.'
